- Thursday, July 12, 2012, 10:11 AM Telecom equipment and optical component names fell yesterday due to Adtran's results, and today they're underperforming with the help oft Calix's (CALX -25.5%) warning. JDSU -3.3%. ALLT -4.9%. ADTN -3.6%. JNPR -2.7%. FNSR -2.8%. Aside from macro conditions, wireline telecom capex budgets are being pressured by the data demands of mobile networks, and the heavy debt loads of Euro carriers. Juniper reports on July 23. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 4:31 PM Calix (CALX -10.2%) falls 23.8% AH after warning it expects Q2 revenue of $79M and EPS of $0.04, far below a consensus of $95.1M and $0.10. The broadband infrastructure provider, already hit hard by Adtran's Q2 report, blames weak service provider capex in multiple markets. The capex cuts, in turn, are blamed on macro issues and regulatory uncertainty. UBS' call on telecom capex is looking quite accurate at this point. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 10:59 AM Adtran (ADTN -14.3%) plunges after reporting Q2 revenue of $184M (down slightly Y/Y) and EPS of $0.38; the latter beat by $0.03, but the former missed by $6.2M. Much like Acme Packet, Adtran blames a tough telecom capex environment for its woes. The company is guiding for Q3 revenue to be flat to slightly up Q/Q (consensus is for a 20% increase), and says poor visibility leaves it cautious about the near-term. Down in sympathy: CIEN -7%. CALX -6.4%. TLAB -1.7%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Monday, July 9, 2012, 4:57 PM NeoPhotonics (NPTN) +17.2% AH after stating it expects Q2 revenue to exceed a prior guidance range of $55M-$61M (the consensus stands at $58M) thanks to strong demand for a variety of optical component products. The news is a welcome change of pace for an industry struggling to deal with soft telecom capex and price pressure. FNSR +1.1% in sympathy. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, June 11, 2012, 4:22 PM More on Finisar's FQ4: Though the company beat estimates, it's guiding for FQ1 revenue of $218M-$233M and EPS of $0.11-$0.15, below a consensus of $250.4M and $0.24. The optical component vendor says weak carrier capex is hurting its telecom product sales, and that recent annual price reductions have also had an impact. FNSR -1.2% AH, adding to today's 9.5% drop. JDSU -1.4% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
- Thursday, May 31, 2012, 9:07 AM More on Ciena's FQ2: The company expects FQ3 revenue of $455M-$485M, in-line with a $471.1M consensus. In spite of revenue increase, FQ2 gross margin fell 170 bps Y/Y to 39.6%. Optical transmission gear made up 2/3 of revenue, whereas optical switches and carrier Ethernet switches each made up less than 7%. With 29% of Ciena's float shorted as of May 15, and shares down sharply in recent weeks, a short squeeze could occur. CIEN +5.2%. JDSU +1.5%. FNSR +1.4%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 5:05 PM Cisco (CSCO) guides on its FQ3 earnings call (webcast) for 2%-5% FQ4 revenue growth and EPS of $0.44-$0.46, below a consensus of 7.1% growth and EPS of $0.49. CSCO -8.1% AH. JNPR -2.4%. JDSU -1.9%. FFIV -1.4%. RVBD -1.5%. 3 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, May 7, 2012, 4:47 PM More on Fabrinet's FQ3: The company is guiding for FQ4 revenue of $139M-$143M and EPS of $0.25-$0.27, below a consensus of $164M and $0.32. Fabrinet manufactures optical components for JDS Uniphase (JDSU), Oclaro (OCLR), Opnext (OPXT), and others. FN -10% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 3, 2012, 12:46 PM Juniper (JNPR -4%) sells off after Caris' John Slack starts coverage with an Average rating. Slack thinks expectations of a recovery in carrier spending (64% of Juniper's sales) are baked into estimates, and is worried about macro conditions and Juniper's ability to quickly convert bookings into revenue. Yesterday, JDS Uniphase (JDSU -3.9%) said delays in carrier orders were partly responsible for its FQ3 revenue weakness. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]

[On the Move] - Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 4:22 PM More on JDS Uniphase's FQ3: The company blames later-than-expected carrier orders and macro issues for its top-line weakness. Spending cuts allowed earnings to meet estimates. Gross margin fell 130 bps Q/Q and 210 bps Y/Y to 45.5%. Telecom optical component sales +3.7% Q/Q but -22.5% Y/Y. Commercial lasers were strong, +19% Q/Q and +21% Y/Y. JDSU -4.8% AH. FNSR -3.5%. OCLR -1%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 4:10 PM JDS Uniphase (JDSU): FQ3 EPS of $0.11 in-line. Revenue of $409.2M (-10.1% Y/Y) misses by $11.2M. Expects FQ4 revenue of $415M-$445M, below $456.6M consensus. Shares -3.7% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]

- Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 4:45 PM Citi praises Oclaro's (OCLR -6.4%) purchase of Opnext (OPXT +53.1%) for having minimal product overlap, and reducing Oclaro's telecom industry exposure. It also thinks a target for $35M-$45M in annual cost savings is reasonable. Credit Suisse notes Opnext is being acquired at just a 0.32x enterprise value/sales multiple, and expects the deal to be a positive for optical component peers such as JDSU and FNSR. (earlier) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 9:34 AM Up initially following its all-stock acquisition of Opnext (OPXT +47.8%), Oclaro (OCLR -7.1%) is now lower. Concerns about the deal's premium, and perhaps the potential for share loss as customers strive to keep a diverse stable of suppliers, could be having an impact. That, in turn, has brought Opnext shares down to $1.67, well below the $1.96 price implied by yesterday's close. Rivals are trading higher: FNSR +3.4%. JDSU +2.2%. NPTN +1.1%. Comment!
