    James Hardie (JHX) drops 4.4% in Sydney after the maker of several indispensable building products (hands up if you used HardieBacker for underlayment on your last tile project) beats earnings forecasts, but flags as "uncertain" the "extent and rate of improvement" of the U.S. housing market. With shares up 52% Y/Y, it's a good excuse to sell. (PR)

    James Hardie (JHX) wins a tax ruling in Australia over a capital gains charge dating back to 1998. If the tax authority doesn't appeal, the firm will receive a $242M refund and a portion of legal costs. Shares +5.8% premarket.

    Australia begins to say "uncle" to the continued surge in its currency, as chatter begins regarding intervention. "We're seeing the worst trading conditions experienced in the last 30 years," says the head of a tourism council. Shares -0.85% last night, down nearly 5% the last 3 weeks. Aussie -0.6%.

    A series of rate increases, epic cyclones, and biblical flooding are doing wonders for Australian shares, which closed at levels not seen since April. Strength in mining stocks combined with surprisingly good results from the banking sector power the most recent move. ETFs: EWA, KROO.

    Just beginning to dry out from biblical floods, Queensland braces for one of the most powerful cyclones ever on Wednesday/Thursday. Coal exports look to get pushed back again. Stocks and the aussie remain resilient, both near 52 week highs. EWA +1.2%. FXA +0.4%. Some Australian ADRs.

    A slowing Australian economy has Goldman Sachs (GS) equity strategists in Oz increasing their exposure to the "US recovery thematic." Favorites include building materials supplier James Hardie (JHX -0.32%) and biotech CSL (CSL.AX +2.5%).
