Wednesday, June 12, 11:07 AM Cisco (CSCO +0.3%) is delivering an evolutionary upgrade for its costly CRS core router line. The upgraded routers, named CRS-X, will deliver a 150% increase in capacity/slot, and support 4 100G ports/slot with the help of Cisco's CPAK silicon photonics tech. Cisco also claims the CRS-X will support 64 100G ports per 7' rack, and that this beats the 40 offered by Alcatel-Lucent's (ALU) 7950 router and the 32 by Juniper's (JNPR) T4000; but Alcatel claims to have reached 80. Light Reading recently reported Cisco is prepping a next-gen core routing platform called CTR that (based on reported info) would deliver a 150% capacity/slot increase from the CRS-X. Comment! [Tech]
Monday, June 10, 11:48 AM Fidelity now owns 54M shares of Juniper (JNPR -0.3%), which is good for a 10.6% stake in the networking vendor. The firm owned 44.4M shares at the end of Q1. Juniper had a rough start to Q2, thanks in part to its the guidance given with its Q1 report, but has gradually rallied since late April. FQ3 guidance is for revenue of $515M-$545M, above a $509.5M consensus. Ciena sacrificed margins a bit - while revenue rose 12% Q/Q, gross margin fell 210 bps to 42.5% - but given the size of its revenue beat, investors don't mind. Sales of integrated Ethernet/optical networking hardware (Ciena is a leader here and recently announced a refresh) +10% Y/Y and 57% of revenue. Wednesday, June 5, 12:11 PM Juniper (JNPR +5.6%) spikes higher after CEO Kevin Johnson states at a BofA/Merrill conference his company is seeing a pickup in carrier router spend. Though Juniper's enterprise security ops struggled in Q1, its service provider sales grew 4% Y/Y, thanks in large part to healthy core/edge router demand. Friday, May 31, 6:53 PM Cisco (CSCO) is prepping a successor to its costly/high-margin CRS-3 core router that will be called the CTR and offer up to 1Tb/s of capacity per slot, according to a document ontained by Light Reading. That figure represents a solid increase from the CRS-3's 400Gb/s per slot, and is also above the 800Gb/s delivered by Alcatel-Lucent's (ALU) 7950 core router, launched last year to much fanfare and PR mudslinging. Juniper's (JNPR) T4000 is at 240Gb/s per slot. The CTR is also said to support Cisco's CPAK silicon photonics modules, which some analysts (though not all) view as a threat to JDS Uniphase (JDSU) and Finisar (FNSR). Comment! [Tech]
Tuesday, May 28, 12:54 PM Sonus (SONS +5.4%) jumps after announcing a hardware/software partnership with Juniper (JNPR +1.1%) that covers the networking industry's favorite buzzphrase, software-defined networking. Sonus' 5000 series VoIP session border controllers (SBCs) will be paired with Juniper's MX Series edge routers and SRC Policy Engine software to give carriers the ability to offertiered IP video and unified communications services, as well as more efficiently use network capacity. The announcement comes a couple weeks after Sonus, which competes with Oracle-owned Acme Packet in the SBC market, refreshed the 5000 series to include more modular systems. Comment! Less than 2 months after downgrading Cisco and Juniper (JNPR -0.5%) on a belief software-defined networking (SDN) will drastically lower switch/router demand, the firm says talks suggest SDN overlay solutions - Cisco, Juniper, and VMware (VMW) are pushing them - are gaining traction relative to products requiring big hardware changes, and that this should limit near-term sales pressure.
