- Thursday, May 16, 9:15 AM A few Cisco rivals and suppliers are up premarket after the networking giant beat estimates while reporting strong data center switch/server sales and service provider orders (albeit while cautioning the SP capex environment remains tough). Some others might move higher following the open. JNPR +3.6%. FFIV +3.2%. CIEN +3.9%. EZCH +1.2% - Cisco mentioned on its earnings call sales of its ASR 9000 edge routers, which EZchip supplies network processors for, were up 40%+ Y/Y. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 15, 5:00 PM Cisco (CSCO) guides on FQ3 call (webcast) for FQ4 EPS of $0.50-$0.52 and revenue growth of 4%-7%, which compares with a consensus of $0.51 and 6.9%. Revenue growth will take a 1% hit from the Linksys sale. Gross margin is expected to drop to 61%-62% from FQ3's 63%. Shares +7.9% AH. JNPR +1.6%. BRCD +1.1% CIEN +1.5%. 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move, Breaking News]
- Wednesday, May 15, 1:23 AM IDC cuts its 2013 IT spending growth forecast to 4.9% from 5.5%, citing macro issues and weak PC demand; 2012 growth was 5.6%. Gartner, which includes a bigger array of products/services in its numbers, forecast 4.1% growth last month. IDC now sees U.S. software spending (MSFT, ORCL) growing 6%, down from a prior 7%. Storage hardware revenue (EMC, NTAP) is only expected to grow 2.4%, down from 2012's 6.1%, and carrier spending on networking gear (CSCO, JNPR, ALU, CIEN) is expected to grow just 1.1% vs. 5.8% in 2012. Recent earnings reports and warnings (I, II, III, IV) help explain the subdued outlook. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, May 13, 12:53 PM FBR has upgraded Cisco (CSCO +0.3%) to Market Perform ahead of Wednesday's FQ3 report. Less than 2 months after downgrading Cisco and Juniper (JNPR -0.5%) on a belief software-defined networking (SDN) will drastically lower switch/router demand, the firm says talks suggest SDN overlay solutions - Cisco, Juniper, and VMware (VMW) are pushing them - are gaining traction relative to products requiring big hardware changes, and that this should limit near-term sales pressure. Though rivals doubtlessly disagree, Cisco has been arguing its SDN solution can offer superior intelligence, thanks to its integration with Cisco hardware. (switch competition) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, May 6, 6:56 PM Prashant Gandhi, the head of project management for Cisco's (CSCO) software-defined networking (SDN) efforts, has left to join SDN startup Big Switch, which in March unveiled an open standards-based SDN solution declared an alternative to Cisco and VMware/Nicira's more proprietary offerings. Gandhi helped develop Cisco's ONE SDN controller. Tom Black, another key member of Cisco's SDN team, left last October for startup Arista. Meanwhile, leveraging the Contrail Systems acquisition, Juniper (JNPR) today unveiled an SDN controller that the company promises won't require major hardware changes; will this affect flexibility? 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 24, 3:41 PM Juniper (JNPR -9.7%) hits levels last seen in July '12 thanks to disappointing results and guidance, and perhaps also AT&T's capex cuts. A 19% Q/Q and Y/Y Q1 sales drop for Juniper's security hardware ops, which have been losing share and are rumored to be on the block, is of particular concern to Stifel. "The company continues to struggle in its campus and branch office security portfolio and needs a focused strategy." Security weakness led enterprise sales to be roughly flat Y/Y. Service provider sales rose 4%, driven by core/edge router demand from U.S. telcos. Americas sales +11%, but EMEA -5% and Asia-Pac -9%. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

[On the Move] - Tuesday, April 23, 5:22 PM Tech guidance roundup: 1) Juniper (JNPR) expects Q2 revenue of $1.07B-$1.1B and EPS of $0.22-$0.26, below a consensus of $1.11B and $0.27. Enterprise IT weakness blamed, telecom healthy. 2) Cree (CREE) expects FQ4 revenue of $365M-$385M and EPS of $0.34-$0.40 vs. a consensus of $367.6M and $0.37. Gross margin expected to be ~39.5%, up from FQ3s 38.8%. 3)RF Micro (RFMD) expects FQ1 revenue of $285M-$290M and EPS of $0.07-$0.08, largely above a consensus of $265.8M and $0.07. JNPR -6.4% AH. CREE -7.3%. RFMD -3.3%. (Juniper PR) (Cree PR) (RF Micro PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

- Wednesday, April 10, 11:04 AM Adtran's (ADTN +13%) Q1 beat is contributing to strong gains in telecom equipment, chip, and component stocks, as investors take it as another sign of improving telecom capex going into earnings season. Adtran's remarks about strong demand from both U..S. and international carriers can't be hurting. CSCO +2.5%. CIEN +6.4%. JDSU +4.6%. ALU +4.6%. FN +4.8%. FNSR +6%. PKT +4.2%. RKUS +4.2%. JNPR +3.9%. CAVM +3%. INFN +2.9%. OCLR +4%. SONS +2.5%. 2013 has seen a string of rallies (I, II, III) tied to capex hopes. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, April 5, 11:40 AM A downgrade to Equalweight from Barclays is contributing to Juniper's (JNPR -5.3%) post-F5 losses. The downgrade comes a day after Juniper announced its highly programmable EX9200 data center switch, which (like the Contrail Systems deal) drives home a software-defined networking strategy of emphasizing interoperability with 3rd-party offerings (in contrast to Cisco's more proprietary approach). Juniper asserts the EX9200, which uses a home-grown ASIC, is "designed to support all known protocols today and all unknown protocols for the next decade." Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

After-hours top losers: NGD -7%. HMY -6%. CDE -6%. JNPR -5%. IAG -5%. Comment! [On the Move] - Thursday, April 4, 4:38 PM F5 (FFIV) resumes trading and is currently at $75.85, down 16.1% AH in response to its FQ2 warning, which (in the wake of Oracle's results) is bound to heighten concerns about U.S./European enterprise IT demand. Rivals and peers are off in sympathy: CSCO -2.3%. RVBD -3.7% CTXS -3.7%. JNPR -5.1%. VMW -2.2%. EMC -0.9%. RHT -1.7%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
