I think that there are two important players that you've missed.HPQ - Hewlett-Packard Company, whose ProCurve division is number 2 in layer two switches, AHEAD of 3Com, and who has made rock-solid layer two equipment for a couple of decades now. Even though ProCurve is a very small part of a large company, they are in increasingly important network player, who gets strong synergies from the other HP divisions.
And ADTN - AdTran, who, while they don't have the name recognition of the other players, has quitely taken over the #2 position in routers by units. These guys are shipping a LOT of small routers, with an interesting support plan that makes their products VERY attactive to large ISPs and cable companies. Reply

Level 3 is not an application acceleration provider. They provide content delivery and streaming services through their acquisition of the SAVVIS CDN assets (former Sandpiper/Digital Island) and enhancements to those assets which they purchased over a year and a half ago. Application acceleration is not CDN. ReplyHow Wall Street's Meltdown May Affect Tech Sector [view article]
In the short term, have to think that with the panic in financial services hitting in the last part of the quarter that it will create enough uncertainty to freeze some large deals that were forecasted for this quarter by IT vendors with heavy financials exposure. I can only comment from my main position which is the owner of a Consumer Healthcare marketing business. The platinum prize in this tough market is helping the pharmaceuticals move existing pattents with growth stalled and down in the 3% range this year. To accelerate moving pattents is a focus on DTCA (Direct to Consumer Advertising) which requires a technical solution to track all marketing to patient databases then crank up more of a CPS (cost per sale) model. This is our current task along with staying in business. Fortunately, since June of 2007 our firm prepared for such events, but regardless it has been tough hanging around. Because LOC funding is gone, iBanks and big business VC funding slowed to a crawl and little or no funding opportunities, small businesses have begun to fail - hence the job shedding in all sectors now, no longer localized to iBanks or real-estate.Private equity will step into tech for early stage, small and mid-cap companies next year that can solve larger market problems of assisting the market with efficiency but the numbers show most private equity investors are sitting on the sidelines. I assume they are awaiting to see how this banking meltdown this fall plays out, the election results and seeing the plans of the next crop of politicians and what economic plans are put into place by end of Q1 2009. How Wall Street's Meltdown May Affect Tech Sector [view article]
The "carnage" in the financial sector ,is really a correction and a part of the market consolidation. What impact that will have on the high tech sector ,remains to be seen.It is conceivable that the high tech sector will do fine financial as the firms try to spend more on technology in order to reduce the operational costs. Conceivably ,foreign costumers will step up with the orders to maintain technological competitiver edge. After this consolidation, the equities should move higher .The economy will surprise investors by the end of October and the equities will move higher. Juniper announced it now supports the Microsoft NAP agent in place of the UAC client. That only saves the step of deploying the UAC agent, not a big deal in Microsoft shops that can deploy an agent with simple Active Directory policy. The real question is will Microsoft Forefront negate the need for UAC in Microsoft shops. Microsoft has a two pronged strategy for network access control (NAC); integrate with 3rd parties with the NAP client, and compete against them with Forefront and other Microsoft security products.

There are reasons to question the significance of the S&P500, at least in terms of what it actually represents. For an interesting view on the subject see article and comments at:www.clusterstock.com/2... Reply
