Interim Janus CEO Tim Armour blamed the outflow on large-cap underperformance and rebalancing into fixed-income portfolios. Earnings earlier missed estimates on 17% lower revenue.

S&P downgrades Janus (JNS) to junk (BB+), sending shares reeling. "Janus has been harder hit than most other rated asset managers during the global plunge in stock prices, because it is primarily an equity shop," S&P says. JNS recently -12% to $3.94.

Money manager Janus Capital (JNS +7.1%) may emerge as an attractive acquisition target as credit markets improve, JP Morgan says, citing its franchise value and brand recognition. It notes investors are aware of short-term performance weakness, and says the risks are now largely priced into the stock.
