- Friday, May 10, 12:32 PM A number of retailers are seeing some speculative buying after True Religion TRLG lands a takeover offer and Gap puts in a powerhouse month for sales to help lift sentiment. The S&P Retail ETF (XRT) is up 1.1%, but might be doing better on the day if not for its heavy weighting currently into drugstore and grocery stocks. Gainers: FNP +4.1%, JOEZ +2.3%, VFC +1.5%, JNY +1.9%, GES +2.1%, APP +2.2%, BKE +1.5%. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]

The retailer will also cut its domestic retail staff by around 18%. In a preliminary estimate of Q1 results, the company says it sees revenue of approximately $1B and EPS of $0.15. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, April 12, 2:37 PM Jones Group (JNY +11.6%) skyrockets after Barington Capital which, according to WSJ, has built a position in the shares over the past 12 months, advises the firm to hire advisers and pursue the disposal of non-core brands. After-hours top losers: PC -10%. IDIX -7%. RTEC -6%. YUM -6%. BIDU -5%. Comment! [On the Move] - Monday, January 28, 10:22 AM The National Retail Federation forecasts 2013 retail sales will increase at a rate of 3.4%, lower than the 4.2% rise seen in 2012. Consumer attitudes will be influenced by higher payroll taxes and the ongoing fiscal cliff drama before improving in the second half of the year, according to the trade group. Retailers with strong online businesses should be able to ride out the moderate growth period adequately with online sales forecast to rise between 9% and 12% for the year. 9 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 7:15 AM Jones Apparel Group (JNY): Q3 EPS of $0.57 beats by $0.25. Revenue of $1.04B (+1% Y/Y) in-line. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 1:14 PM Retailers want to edge into the holiday shopping season as early as possible this year with most forecasts calling for steady - but not spectacular - spending numbers. Trends to watch: 1) Increased online couponing and promotional activity from fringe players. 2) Managing inventory should be easier with the season starting early and big data initiatives firing up which could help margins. 3) The calendar comes through for retailers with a lush 32-day window between Thanksgiving and Christmas extending the crucial part of the season. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, October 4, 2012, 7:57 AM The vibe flowing out of September sales reports from retailers is largely positive with big names such as Costo and Limited Brands showing brisk sales, while teen seller Zumiez (ZUMZ) knocked it out of the park with 18.6% growth. Although back-to-school season numbers look to be beating expectations, the best gift for retail investors may be when Q3 reports roll in with companies showing improved margins as clearance sales were avoided and inventory controls clicked. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, September 27, 2012, 12:44 PM Young shoppers are the force behind the rapid growth of showrooming with their grasp on how to use mobile devices to find the best deals, according to research by AlixPartners. Naturally, Amazon (AMZN +2.2%) appears to be a beneficiary of the trend, but brick-and-mortar retailers could have a secret weapon. A retail brief published by Aimia suggests that the very same savvy young shoppers who make showrooming a force of habit are also the most loyal reward program participants. The end game: A loyalty program with soft benefits could steal Amazon's thunder. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 8:24 AM The Jones Group (JNY): Q2 EPS of $0.22 beats by $0.15. Revenue of $855M (-3.7% Y/Y) misses by $12.M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 12:51 PM The high-end denim segment could see some M&A activity with private equity-backed Hudson Jeans and J Brand both considering a possible IPO or sale. Potential bidders: JNY, GIII, and Li & Fung. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, July 3, 2012, 6:39 AM Privately-held J Brand hires Morgan Stanley to help it explore the possibility of going public with an IPO or selling itself. Potential bidders for the maker of women's jeans that are found at many large department stores include Jone Group (JNY), VF Corp. (VFC), G-III Apparel Group (GIII), and Li & Fung. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Wednesday, April 25, 2012, 11:25 AM Shares of Jones Group (JNY -4.4%) fall after the company saw revenue and adjusted profits weaken in Q1 compared to last year - even with warm weather and an early Easter holiday in play. The company says that its footwear and jeanswear groups performed well, while traditional sportswear performance remained challenging. Comment! [On the Move]

We are a leading designer, marketer and wholesaler of branded apparel, footwear and accessories. We also market directly to consumers through our chain of specialty retail and value-based stores and through our e-commerce web sites. Our nationally recognized brands include Jones New York, Nine West, Anne Klein, Gloria Vanderbilt, Kasper, Bandolino, Easy Spirit, Evan-Picone, l.e.i., Energie, Enzo Angiolini, Joan & David, Mootsies Tootsies, Sam & Libby, Napier, Judith Jack, Albert Nipon and Le Suit. We also market costume jewelry under the Givenchy brand licensed from Givenchy Corporation, women's footwear under the Dockers(R) and Dockers(R) Women brands and infants', toddlers' and boys' footwear (excluding girls' footwear) under the Dockers(R) and Dockers(R) Premium brands, licensed from Levi Strauss & Co., apparel and accessories under the Rachel Roy brand licensed from Rachel Roy IP Company, LLC (a limited liability company in which we own a fifty percent interest) and Jessica Simpson jeanswear licensed from VCJS, LLC. Each brand is differentiated by its own distinctive styling, pricing strategy, distribution channel and target consumer. We contract for the manufacture of our products through a worldwide network of quality manufacturers. We have capitalized on our nationally known brand names by entering into various licenses for several of our trademarks, including Jones New York, Anne Klein New York, Nine West, Gloria Vanderbilt, l.e.i. and Evan-Picone, with select manufacturers of women's and men's products which we do not manufacture. For more than 30 years, we have built a reputation for excellence in product quality and value, and in operational execution.
On February 4, 2010, we announced that we had acquired Moda Nicola International, LLC ("MNI"), owner of the Robert Rodriguez Collection, a privately held designer, marketer and wholesaler of women's contemporary eveningwear and sportswear. MNI generated net revenues of approximately $17 million for the year ended December 31, 2009.
Our operations are comprised of five revenue-generating segments: wholesale better apparel, wholesale jeanswear, wholesale footwear and accessories, retail and licensing. We identify operating segments based on, among other things, the way our management organizes the components of our business for purposes of allocating resources and assessing performance. Segment revenues are generated from the sale of apparel, footwear and accessories through wholesale channels, our own retail locations and several e-commerce web sites that we operate and, for licensing, as a percentage of revenues for items sold by our licensees under our trademarks.
At December 31, 2009, we had approximately 6,525 full-time employees. This total includes approximately 2,460 in quality control, production, design and distribution positions, approximately 1,870 in administrative, sales, clerical and office positions and approximately 2,195 in our retail stores. We also employ approximately 5,010 part-time employees, of which approximately 4,925 work in our retail stores. Approximately 70 of our employees located in Vaughan, Ontario are members of the Laundry and Linen Drivers and Industrial Workers Union, which has a collective bargaining agreement with us expiring on March 31, 2012. Approximately 30 of our employees located in New York, New York are members of UNITE HERE, which has a collective bargaining agreement that expires on May 31, 2010. Approximately 180 of our employees located in Socorro, Texas are members of UNITE HERE, which has a collective bargaining agreement that expires on October 31, 2012. We consider our relations with our employees to be satisfactory.
