- Friday, May 17, 2:19 PM Execs with Nordstrom (JWN -1.2%) highlighted the company's successful partnership with Topshop during the firm's earnings call. The British firm's clothing lines sold well online and in the 14 stores where Nordstrom carrier them. As a result, the retailer plans to add another 28 stores to the Topshop strategy later this year. After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: SINA +4.7%. EA +2.7%. NBG +2.5%. AKAM +2.4%. DYAX +2.4%.
After-hours top losers: ARUN -13.7%. ADSK -5.2%. BRCD -4.9%. JWN -3.5%. EGLE -2.4%. Comment! [On the Move] - Thursday, May 16, 5:31 PM More on Nordstrom (JWN): Q1 misses across the board. Net earnings fell 2.7% Y/Y as higher input costs masked slightly better revenue. The company also cut its FY14 total sales and same-store sales guidance ranges by half a percentage point each, now expecting 4% to 6% growth, and 3% to 5% growth, respectively. For the current period, it projects its EPS to grow by more than 7%, or around $0.86, just below the $0.87 projected by analysts. Shares -3.5% AH. 1 Comment [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 16, 4:07 PM Nordstrom (JWN): Q1 EPS of $0.73 misses by $0.03. Revenue of $2.7B (+4.8% Y/Y) misses by $0.1B. Shares -3.9% AH. (PR) 3 Comments [Earnings, Breaking News, On the Move]

- Wednesday, May 15, 8:39 AM Nordstrom, Inc. (JWN) declares $0.30/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 1.96%. For shareholders of record May 31. Payable June 17. Ex-div date May 29. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Monday, May 13, 9:11 AM More on retail sales: Building material and garden equipment sales (HD, LOW) were again, up 1.5% M/M and 4.1% Y/Y, while department store sales (SHLD, KSS, M, JWN, JCP) trailed expectations. Grocery store sales (KR, SVU, SWY) slipped during April compared to March but were 2% than a year ago on pricing gains. 1 Comment [U.S. Economy, Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 8, 3:00 PM A devastating fire in Bangladesh at an apparel factory has added a sense of urgency to a push in the retail world to disclose where and how products are made. The move isn't purely based on altruism, surveys show consumers will pay more for clothes with signs on fair-labor practices. Nordstrom (JWN +0.2%) is considering starting to promote clothes made in humane working conditions - while Nike (NKE) and Wal-Mart (WMT -0.7%) plan to take on tired accusations of sweat-shop tactics with more disclosures. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, May 6, 5:00 AM More on a possible Neiman Marcus IPO: TPG Capital and Warburg Pincus reckon they can pull in $8B for the department store chain after sinking $5.1B into a purchase in 2005. If a deal is struck, the valuation set could be of interest to investors of mall rivals Saks (SKS) and Nordstrom (JWN). Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, April 18, 12:30 PM Department store chains are trading weak with weak economic indicators and chatter on weak sales trends at Wal-Mart (WMT -1.5%) swaying sentiment. The sector is already a bit jitterish with Target's (TGT -0.9%) Q1 sales warnings from earlier in the week still resonating. Decliners include Sears Holdings (SHLD -2.5%), Nordstrom (JWN -1.4%), Saks (SKS -1.6%), and Macy's (M -1.2%) - while Fred's (FRED +0.1%) and J.C. Penney (JCP +1.6%) are bucking the trend. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, April 12, 8:47 AM The March report on retail sales indicates a measurable impact was felt by retailers from the round of cooler weather seen in the U.S. during the month right along with broader macroeconomic factors. Department store (KSS, JWN, DDS, SKS, SHLD) and home garden (HD, LOW) sales tipped to the weaker side while online sales showed some strength. 3 Comments [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Monday, April 8, 2:26 PM Nordstrom (JWN -0.5%) plans to add a second store in Toronto as it continues to make expansion in Canada a priority. What to watch: The U.S. retail assault on Canada has started strong this year with Target reporting strong sales, but the higher cost structure in the nation puts some extra pressure on retailers to keep pricing strong. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, March 15, 2:53 PM Consumer wrapup: An improved jobs situation and a break upward in the value of houses seems to be trumping higher payroll taxes as consumers continue to spend more than some of the more dire forecasts for the first half of 2012 foreshadowed. By sector, Staples (XLP), Discretionary (XLY), and Retail (XRT) are all double-digit gainers for the year, while defensive-oriented plays (PG, CLX, CL, REV, GIS) have been busy tracking higher. A couple of retail powerhouses - Wal-Mart (WMT) and TJX Companies (TJX) - haven't joined the 2013 frivolity just yet and the department store group (M, SKS, DDS, JWN, KSS, JCP) has lagged. Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, March 13, 8:44 AM More on Retail Sales: Two months into the year and retail categories look reasonably strong compared to estimates with the exception of electronics (BBY, RSH, CONN) and department stores (JWN, M, DDS, SHLD, KSS) which are running below last year's pace of sales. Improved results in the automobile and sporting goods categories (guns) were no surprise, but building material & garden (HD, LOW) looks slightly better than anticipated, according to analysts. Comment! [U.S. Economy, Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 5, 8:29 AM Retail winners today include Ascena Retail Group (ASNA) and American Apparel (APP), both up double-digits after reporting solid earnings. Both companies blasted past the estimates of analysts as sales were boosted by a strong online business. It continues a trend of smaller retail chains chipping away at department stores online, highlighted dramatically by J.C. Penney's (JCP) online meltdown (-34.4% Q4, -37% Q3) and to a much lesser extent by growth rates at Dillard's (DDS), Kohl's (KSS), Sears (SHLD), Saks (SKS), and Nordstrom (JWN). 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
