KMI vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
Kinder Morgan is the largest midstream and the fourth largest energy company in North America with a combined enterprise value of approximately $100 billion. It owns an interest in or operates approximately 75,000 miles of pipelines and 180 terminals. Its pipelines transport natural gas,... More

- Friday, June 14, 6:52 PM Kinder Morgan Partners (KMP) restarts the 307K bbl/day Trans Mountain pipeline after repair crews finished their work on a defect that prompted a small oil spill - roughly six barrels - earlier this week. KMP plans to almost triple the line's capacity, which extends from Alberta to B.C. and Washington state, and critics were quick to seize on the spill: "Where oil moves, it spills," says the head of B.C.'s Sierra Club. 8 Comments [Energy]
- Sunday, June 2, 9:03 AM S&P ups its outlook on Kinder Morgan Inc. (KMI) to Positive from Stable (double-B) noting the company's size and cash flow position post-the El Paso merger. The ratings agency also looks favorably on KMI's execution of its deleveraging plan. A bevy of SA contributors have recently weighed in on KMP (I, II, III, IV); the limited partner units are also a Cramer favorite. VP and CFO Kimberly Allen Dang recently presented at the NAPTP 2013 MLP Investor Conference (transcript). 17 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, May 30, 12:55 PM With the Liberals back in power in British Columbia, Canada’s three western provinces are working on a renewed push to make the proposed Northern Gateway (ENB) and TransMountain (KMP) pipeline projects work. B.C.’s environment minister says a meeting of premiers will happen soon, and he sees "a pathway to yes" to the projects, a more open-minded view than was stated in the recent election campaign. 4 Comments [Energy]
- Friday, May 24, 2:28 PM Rail is no longer seen as just a stopgap for transporting oil until pipelines are built. Case in point: Kinder Morgan Partners' (KMP) proposed 277K bbl/day Freedom pipeline would be the first to bring light, sweet oil from Texas' Permian Basin to California, but refiners Valero (VLO), Tesoro (TSO) and Phillips 66 (PSX) won't sign contracts to use Freedom, preferring the flexibility of rail cars and barges. 28 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, May 23, 5:40 PM Kinder Morgan says it could eventually simplify its complex gaggle of companies, even though "we like having the two MLPs out there to accelerate dropdowns," CFO Kimberly Dang says. The dropdowns will wrap up next year, and a combination would have to "make economic sense. If the economics don’t work... we have no issue running two MLPs. [It] is not a huge administrative burden.” 13 Comments [Energy]
- Monday, May 13, 5:28 PM Kinder Morgan (KMI) and Kinder Morgan Partners (KMP) lift their 2013 financial projections, based mostly on projected contributions from the Copano acquisition. KMI now plans to declare dividends of $1.60/share for 2013, up from $1.57 expected; KMP plans to declare distributions of $5.33/unit, up from $5.28 expected. Kinder Morgan Management (KMR) will pay a $5.33/share distribution via additional shares. 28 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, April 17, 5:42 PM Kinder Morgan (KMI) declares $0.38/share quarterly dividend, 2.7% increase from prior dividend of $0.37. Forward yield 4.02%. For shareholders of record Apr. 29. Payable May 16. Ex-div date Apr. 25. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Wednesday, April 17, 5:32 PM Kinder Morgan (KMI) and Kinder Morgan Partners (KMP) are well positioned for growth, CEO Richard Kinder says after Q1 earnings (I, II), with $12B in expansion and JV investments identified across its companies. May further expand an already expanded condensate splitter planned at its Galena Park terminal along the Houston Ship Channel, Kinder tells analysts. Comment! [Energy, Earnings]
- Wednesday, April 17, 4:47 PM Kinder Morgan (KMI): Q1 EPS of $0.28 misses by $0.03. Revenue of $3.06B beats by $0.14B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Thursday, March 28, 12:13 PM Kinder Morgan Partners (KMP) plans to invest an additional $170M to add a second unit to a petroleum condensate processing facility it is building near its Galena Park terminal on the Houston Ship Channel, after it inked a new throughput contract with BP. KMP had already unveiled plans for a $200M facility, but the new investment will raise total capacity to 100K bbl/day, with the BP contract involving 50K. Comment! [Energy]
- Monday, March 18, 12:48 PM Interest rates will rise sooner or later, but Credit Suisse looks at the rate-rising 2004-07 period and factors now in place to lead it to believe MLPs would outperform should rates rise again. CS still believes increased focus on crude oil infrastructure should drive performance, given the boom in North American production. Its three-to-five-year favorites: PAA, KMI, MKR, MMP, EPD. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, February 7, 5:34 PM Stalled pipeline projects are costing the Canadian economy $30M-$70M every day, according to a new report paid for by the Saskatchewan government. “If pipeline project proposals such as Trans Mountain, Keystone XL and Northern Gateway don’t move forward, Canada will be foregoing $1.3T in economic output... and $281B in tax revenue between now and 2035," says the report’s lead economist. 17 Comments [Energy]
- Monday, February 4, 10:28 AM Despite a strong start to the year, the MLP analysts at Credit Suisse forecast a continued MLP catch-up trade that could lead to significant outperformance by MLPs vs. the S&P 500. The firm's top names have strong exposure to what it sees as the coming oil boom: PAA, MMP, EEP, EPD, GEL, KMR, KMP and KMI, plus ETFs KYN and SRV. 5 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, January 30, 12:24 PM Suncor (SU) is crying foul over transportation fees proposed by Kinder Morgan (KMP, KMI) for the expansion of its Trans Mountain pipeline, contending the latter is leveraging its position as the owner of the only Pacific outlet for Alberta’s landlocked oil to ratchet up tolls “to earn excessive and unreasonable rates of return.” Of the 13 firms contracted for capacity, only SU and Total (TOT) have formally complained. 14 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, January 30, 2:48 AM Kinder Morgan (KMP) agrees to acquire Copano Energy (CPNO) for $3.2B in stock, or $5B including debt, with Kinder's offer of $40.91 a share representing a 23.5% premium to Copano's close yesterday. The deal will provide Kinder with natural gas assets in Texas, Oklahoma and Wyoming, adding 6,900 miles of pipelines to the company's 46,000 existing miles. - Monday, January 28, 6:42 PM Shell's (RDS.A) deal with Kinder Morgan (KMI) to export liquefied natural gas from an existing import terminal would need U.S. permission to export to countries with which the U.S. doesn't have free-trade agreements. But due to Shell's deep pockets and its LNG experience, the effort could stand out amid ~20 projects awaiting permits; so far only one, Cheniere's terminal, is authorized for exports and is under construction. 3 Comments [Energy]
