- Wednesday, May 22, 9:16 AM Kohl's (KSS) names Michelle Gass to the newly created position of chief customer officer to oversee areas including e-commerce and marketing. The exec comes from Starbucks where she was president of Starbucks Europe, Middle East and Africa. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 22, 8:24 AM Retail legal rumblings: An appeals court in California rules that Kohl's (KSS) can be sued over what consumers perceive is false advertising. The court said California consumer law will allow lawsuits in cases where a customer would not have made a purchase except for the false bargain. The ruling could set up an avalanche of similar lawsuits in California against retail chains. 4 Comments [Consumer]

- Thursday, May 16, 7:30 AM More on Kohl's (KSS) Q1: Comparable store sales fell 1.9% during the period, although trends improved near the back end. The company says inventory levels were consistent with expectations. Store count increased 21 to 1,155. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Thursday, May 16, 7:26 AM Kohl's (KSS): Q1 EPS of $0.66 beats by $0.08. Revenue of $4.20B (-1% Y/Y) misses by $90M. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings, Breaking News]

- Monday, May 13, 9:11 AM More on retail sales: Building material and garden equipment sales (HD, LOW) were again, up 1.5% M/M and 4.1% Y/Y, while department store sales (SHLD, KSS, M, JWN, JCP) trailed expectations. Grocery store sales (KR, SVU, SWY) slipped during April compared to March but were 2% than a year ago on pricing gains. 1 Comment [U.S. Economy, Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 8, 9:55 AM Shares of Kohl's (KSS -1.3%) trade lower with a couple of analyst warnings (I, II) out on the table for the retailer's sales trends. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 7, 9:29 AM Retail sales numbers for April could be a tad weaker than expected after weekly reports from Redbook and ICSC-Goldman on chain store sales both came in a bit below expectations. Retail read-through: Weather and swings in gas prices seemed to impact store traffic to malls (KSS, DDS, JCP, LTD, GPS, ANF, AEO) and supercenters (WMT, COST TGT), but economists think consumer confidence on the high end (TIF, RL, SKS, COH, BBBY) just might be on the rise. Also, with online sales de-emphasized in the weekly chain store reports - Internet whiz kids Macy's (M) and Urban Outfitters (URBN) could still outperform even if mall parking lots aren't packed. 1 Comment [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Friday, April 12, 8:47 AM The March report on retail sales indicates a measurable impact was felt by retailers from the round of cooler weather seen in the U.S. during the month right along with broader macroeconomic factors. Department store (KSS, JWN, DDS, SKS, SHLD) and home garden (HD, LOW) sales tipped to the weaker side while online sales showed some strength. 3 Comments [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, April 10, 11:21 AM Though revenue and profit at J.C. Penney has fallen off sharply amid dysfunction, at the end of the day the company is still a +$12B retail giant with over 1K stores. This indicates if a Sears-type cost-cutting plan is implemented, at least a few department store chains could see even more benefits as JCP refugees head their way. The likeliest suspects: Macy's (M), T.J. Maxx (TJX), Gap (GPS), Kohl's (KSS). Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, April 9, 10:31 AM Department store stocks (M, SKS, SHLD, KSS, DDS) are trading lower in the wake of the divorce of Ron Johnson from J.C. Penney and a report on retail chain store sales that leaned to the soft side. It's a move that some analysts see as slightly curious with the weather-related delay to the spring selling season only a temporary bump and with J.C. Penney seemingly a punch or two away from a knockout that could bleed some sales to peers. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, March 22, 11:56 AM Deutsche Bank downgrades Kohl's (KSS -0.4%) to Sell from Hold based on a combination of factors including loss of market share and weak traffic. Deutsche says a "heavy inventory position" could force the retailer to markdown certain items, pressuring margins. The report predicts the stock will revisit its 52-week lows around $41. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 19, 7:03 AM On watch: Kohl's (KSS) is downgraded to Underweight from Equal-Weight by Morgan Stanley with a soft price target of $42. The retailer hasn't seen the pickup in sales from J.C. Penney refugees that some analysts forecast while TJX Companies and Ross Stores have both gained market share at its expense. Comment! [Consumer]
