- Friday, May 10, 5:49 PM Though Priceline (PCLN +3.8%) rallied today in response to its Q1 report, acquisition target Kayak (KYAK -3.4%) slumped to $40.10. Priceline announced yesterday it has received "all necessary regulatory approvals" for the Kayak acquisition, and expects the deal to close on May 21. It looks as if investors are abandoning hope of an offer above the current $40/share (1/3 in cash, 2/3 in stock). Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 10, 1:44 PM Online travel stocks are rallying with more investors jumping on board as both fundamental and technical factors for the sector start to look more promising. In the group, TripAdvisor (TRIP +2.6%) has the business model most leveraged to online advertising rates while Priceline (PCLN +2.8%) has been tagged as "best in breed." Growth opportunities in new markets is the headline story for sector stalwarts Expedia (EXPE +2.5%), Kayak (KYAK +1.3%), Orbitz Worldwide (OWW +8.4%), and Travelzoo (TZOO +2.5%). Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]

After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: BGMD +14%. KYAK +8%. SZYM +6%. LNDC +4%. NAVB +3%.
After-hours top losers: MLNX -16%. RMBS -12%. ESIO -8%. AUO -6%. OME -4%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Friday, November 9, 2012, 4:20 PM Priceline (PCLN -0.3%) and Expedia (EXPE -0.8%) pared the losses they saw after the Kayak (KYAK +28.1%) deal was announced, while TripAdvisor (TRIP +0.6%) fully erased its decline. Nomura's Brian Nowak points out Kayak could take a hit if Expedia (its biggest advertiser) cuts back on spending in response, and that TripAdvisor's 2013 estimates could be at risk if Priceline cuts its ad spending now that it has Kayak as a channel. As far as Priceline goes, Nowak likes the deal's ability to lower Priceline's dependence on Google traffic. (previous) Comment! [Tech, Consumer, On the Move, Quick Ideas]

Premarket gainers: ZIP +27%. KYAK +26%. LGF +9%. ENR +8%. PSTI +8%. IGT +7%. WCRX +6%. ISIS +5%.
Losers: GRPN -23%. MTG -15%. ARRY -12%. PGRX -12%. SPRD -10%. JCP -8%. PVR -6%. CPIX -5%. DIS -5%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Thursday, November 8, 2012, 4:33 PM Kayak Software (KYAK): Q3 EPS of $0.26 beats by $0.07. Revenue of $78.6M (+28.4% Y/Y) misses by $1M. Shares +32% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 4:31 PM Expedia (EXPE) -4.3% AH on news Priceline (PCLN) is acquiring Kayak (KYAK). Investors are likely worried the direct integration of Priceline's travel listings and bidding platform with Kayak's search engine will hurt Expedia's market share. TripAdvisor (TRIP) -3.3% AH, likely on concerns the Priceline deal could end its travel reviews partnership with Kayak. Priceline is holding a call to discuss the merger (webcast). Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 4:23 PM Priceline (PCLN) is acquiring Kayak Software (KYAK) for $40/share, or $1.8B. The price represents a 29% premium to Kayak's close today. 1/3 of the purchased will be financed via cash, and 2/3 via stock. Priceline expects the deal to close in Q1, and have a minimal impact on 2013 EPS. Regulators may take a close look. PCLN -1.5% AH. KYAK is halted until 4:30 p.m. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday, November 2, 2012, 9:36 AM As expected, the solid earnings reports from Priceline and TripAdvisor, have lit a torch under sector players such as Ctrip (CTRP +1.3%), Expedia (EXPE +2.2%), Travelzoo (TZOO +2.8%), Orbitz (OWW -0.6%), and Kayak (KYAK +3.5%) in early trading. The general theme is the online travel business is stabilizing as it adjusts its model to dialed-down expectations in Europe and Asia. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 1, 2012, 6:44 PM Priceline (PCLN) now +9.5% AH following its Q3 beat. Q4 guidance is for EPS of $6.12-$6.57, in-line with a $6.34 consensus and fine with investors worried about Europe and (increasingly) the U.S. Total bookings rose 25% Y/Y in Q3 - international +30%, domestic +7% - only a slight slowdown from Q2. Q4 bookings are expected to grow 21%-28% Y/Y, with 27%-35% international growth offsetting flat domestic growth. Between Priceline and TripAdvisor, online travel names such as EXPE, TZOO, OWW, and KYAK could have a good day tomorrow. (PR) 3 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move, Consumer]
- Thursday, October 11, 2012, 2:26 PM Expedia (EXPE -2.5%) slips after ITG Research claims the company's Q3 domestic sales are tracking to $640M, below a $643M consensus. Other online travel names are also lower: PCLN -1.3%. TRIP -2.8%. KYAK -2%. Priceline's soft Q3 guidance put online travel investors on edge in August. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, September 20, 2012, 7:04 PM Kayak (KYAK +2.7%) rallied today after CEO Steve Hafner declared on CNBC (video) that Google (GOOG) isn't a threat to the travel search engine. "Google has had their flight search and hotel finder out in the market for two years ... it's an inferior product," Hafner asserts. Kayak and Google have a complex relationship: about a tenth of Kayak's traffic comes from Google queries, and the company relies on data from Google's ITA Software unit. Kayak opposed Google's purchase of ITA last year. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 4:17 PM Kayak Software (KYAK): Q2 EPS of $0.19 misses by $0.05. Revenue of $76.9M (+35.4% Y/Y) beats by $1.7M. Shares -4.1% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 11:39 AM Kayak (KYAK +4.8%) is rallying ahead of today's Q2 report, aided by positive comments from JPMorgan. The firm thinks Kayak will post healthy results in spite of the poor performances delivered by other online travel names, given the travel search engine has little European exposure and doesn't face the "over-monetization issues" seen by peers. Also, Jim Cramer talked favorably about Kayak this morning when asked about the company. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 11:48 AM Like Palo Alto Networks, travel search engine Kayak (KYAK -4.1%) has received a cool reception from underwriters: 3 neutral ratings to go with a Buy from Deutsche, which predicts growing consumer awareness, international expansion, and mobile monetization will lead to a 26% revenue CAGR from 2011-14. Morgan Stanley doesn't like the fact Kayak trades at 26x estimated 2013 EPS. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, July 27, 2012, 4:16 PM Expedia's (EXPE +20.1%) stellar Q2 report, which featured a 22% Y/Y jump in hotel bookings, ended up fueling a strong rally in online travel stocks. PCLN +8.9%. OWW +7.3%. TZOO +4.9%. KYAK +2.8%. During its earnings call, Expedia guided for low double-digit 2012 revenue growth (consensus is for 10.6%) and high single-digit EBITDA growth. Still, Pac Crest is on edge over comments about weakening Southern European demand, and Deutsche thinks Priceline is a better buy. (Q1 rally) 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
