- Wednesday, June 12, 10:59 AM The airline sector saw a drop in unit revenue during May even with a decent load factor increase of 70 bps to 84.4% during the month. Unit revenue were down for all major carriers - except Delta Air Line (DAL) with a 0.5% gain and JetBlue (JBLU) with a 1% increase. May unit revenue growth scorecard: US Airways (LCC) -1%; United Continental (UAL) 0% to -1%; Allegiant (ALGT) -8.2% to -8.6%; Alaska Airlines (ALK) -3.3%; American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) -1.8%; Southwest Airlines (LUV) -2%. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 11, 4:21 AM The EU is reportedly expected to give unconditional approval to Delta Airlines' (DAL) $360M acquisition of a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic. The deal would allow the carriers to offer more transatlantic flights from Heathrow Airport and thereby better compete with the dominant partnership made up of British Airways and American Airlines. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Monday, June 10, 12:37 PM American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) and US Airways (LCC +1.6%) name the top executive team for the combined company with five of the eight members appointed from the US Airways side. Doug Parker will be the CEO and will keep his top inner circle intact following the merger. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, June 7, 11:24 AM Airline stocks move higher with more rosy forecasts on business travel demand and a Goldman Sachs upgrade on United Continental helping to tip sentiment. The general take on the sector - and UAL in particular - is that many of the negatives have been factored into share price. Advancers: UAL +5.4%, DAL +3.6%, JBLU +3.1%, LCC +1.3%, ALK +3.1%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 5, 9:27 AM Bank of America downgrades US Airways (LCC) to an Underperform rating from its previous perch of Neutral. After sizing up the merger with American Airlines, the firm thinks estimates on potential synergies flowing from the deal might be too high. LCC -2.8% premarket. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 4, 1:12 PM A judge has passed on AMR Corp.'s (AAMRQ.PK) merger plans with US Airways (LCC +0.1%) to AMR creditors for a vote which could be the next to last step before the combination is finalized later in the year. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 4, 9:51 AM Airline stocks trade higher on optimism that the industry will see rising profit margins. A slip in crude oil prices isn't hurting the cause. Advancers: UAL +2.8%, DAL +2.3%, LCC +2.0%, ALK +2.0%, JBLU +1.5%. (Previous: IATA boosts forecasts) 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, June 3, 9:31 AM IATA boosts its 2013 profit forecast for the airline industry to $12.7B from $10.6B previously (and up 67% from 2012) thanks to better traffic and lower-than-expected fuel prices. The industry load factor is expected to hit a record 80.3% this year, 6 points higher than the previous record set in 2006. At the same time the group reminds of wafer-thin profit margins for many passenger airlines and notes air cargo market growth has stagnated. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 28, 2:10 PM Imperial Capital is out with a bullish take on US Airways (LCC -0.3%), saying the benefits the carrier will realize from its merger with American Airlines isn't reflected in its share price yet. The firm thinks that after the FCC issues final approval on the deal - probably in Q3 - shares could soar. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Sunday, May 26, 3:41 AM The Department of Justice has filed a request asking the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan to block the outline of AMR's (AAMRQ.PK) merger with US Airways (LCC), partly due to the $19.9M severance package that would be paid to outgoing AMR CEO Tom Horton. The DOJ's move follows the rejection of the package by Judge Sean Lane in March even though he approved the merger. 6 Comments [Consumer, M&A]
- Wednesday, May 22, 8:07 PM US Airways (LCC) prices $100M in aircraft financing to reimburse the company for the cost of the purchase of two Airbus aircraft currently owned and two aircraft scheduled to be delivered prior to the date of issuance in June. It also plans to use funds to finance its purchase of seven Airbus aircraft scheduled to be delivered from June 2013 to October 2013. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 21, 11:55 AM American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) continues to shed jobs, according to the latest paperwork the carrier filed. For the 12-month period ending March 31, American cut jobs by close to 10% as it continues to get lean and mean in front of its merger with U.S. Airways (LCC -3.2%). What to watch: Analysts will get their hands on more numbers on the American-U.S. Airways plans shortly which should help generate estimates on synergies the deal will kick up over the next few years. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, May 20, 11:21 AM Senator Charles Schumer wants airlines to reverse their steep increase on flight change fees after Delta Air Lines (DAL -0.5%), United Airlines (UAL -1.1%), American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK), and U.S. Airways (LCC -0.6%) all bumped off their charge to $200 from $150. Last year, the top airlines collected $2.6B in reservation change fees which accounted for a decent portion of the overall growth in the industry. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 14, 12:57 PM U.S. airlines collected $6B in baggage fees (+3.8% Y/Y) and reservation change fees (+7.3%) last year as the industry's model continues to shift. This year looks like it could bring airliners an even bigger haul with American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK), Delta Airlines (DAL +1.7%), United Continental (UAL +1.2%), and US Airways (LCC +2.4%) all raising their domestic flight fee change 33% higher to $200 while Southwest Airlines (LUV +0.5%) adds some cancellations fees of its own. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, May 10, 6:54 AM American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) pushes into South Korea with daily flights into Incheon from the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport. The development ends an eleven-year monopoly on the route by Korean Air Lines and will make the carrier relevant in South Korea with its ability to reach other U.S. destinations through connecting flights. The big picture: The new American-U.S. Air (LCC) combined airline aims to reduce the markets it competes with low-cost carriers and grow internationally. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 8, 2:32 PM Behind Delta Air Lines' (DAL +2.8%) new buyback plan and quarterly dividend marks a paradigm shift at the company, according to CEO Richard Anderson. The change in the capital structure of the carrier also includes a reduction of Delta's debt position as it looks "de-risk" the balance sheet on top of the capital allocation. Will the airline industry (UAL, LCC, JBLU, RJET, ALK, HA, LUV, AAMRQ.PK) finally revert to a business model that throws off cash flow and rewards investors? 1 Comment [Consumer]
