- Friday, May 3, 1:55 PM Global airline passenger traffic picked up in March, according to the latest batch of data from IATA. International traffic was up 6% while domestic traffic grew at a 5.7% clip. Analyst Rahul Sharma notes emerging markets helped drive the growth and thinks recent fare increases shows confidence by the group that demand will sustain. - Monday, April 29, 4:12 PM As the first Dreamliner returns to flight, a number of other global airlines appear to be following suit. Latam Airlines (LFL -2.5%) expects its Boeing (BA -1%) 787 Dreamliners to return to operations in June, while China's aviation regulator will likely grant approval next month for the aircraft to begin commercial service with the nation's airlines. The first Dreamliner was due to be delivered to China Southern and Hainan Airlines last year, but the delivery was held up because Chinese authorities hadn't issued an airworthiness certificate for the aircraft. The lift is due to "improving efficiency and restructuring," says IATA director-general Tony Tyler. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, July 30, 2012, 3:00 PM Argentina better hire more currency-sniffing dogs as dollar deposits continue to flee the country, now off 42.3% since October. - Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 2:33 PM Brazilian airline Tam (TAM +5.5%) says it will delay a share-swap auction to June 22 to give shareholders more time to approve its merger with Lan Airlines (LFL -0.5%) that would create Latin America’s largest airline. The number of holdouts among Tam's minority shareholders surprises analysts, but the takeover is not likely to be derailed. Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer, M&A, On the Move]
- Monday, April 16, 2012, 12:09 PM More on Argentina's takeover of YPF: The government will send a bill to Congress to take a 51% stake in the oil & gas giant for the "public good," according to an official. The move follows weeks of government pressure for the firm to spend more and pay its investors less. Shares -14%, Repsol (REPYY.PK) -1.7%. 9 Comments [Energy, Global & FX, M&A]
- Wednesday, April 4, 2012, 3:52 PM The Argentine ETF (ARGT -4%) continues to tumble (off 13% in a month) as the U.K. sends a warship to the South Atlantic. Yesterday, President Kirchner yesterday called the U.K.'s claim on the islands "absurd." Also not helping are growing threats of nationalization of the country's oil giant YPF. 2 Comments [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 3:13 PM Spain's Repsol (REPYY.PK -5.6%) follows shares of its Argentine subsidiary YPF sharply lower on worries President Fernandez could announce greater intervention into the oil giant's operations on Thursday. The Argentina ETF: ARGT -2.4% - also taking a hit as YPF no doubt makes up a nice chunk of its holdings. Comment! [Global & FX, Energy, On the Move]
- Friday, February 24, 2012, 8:30 AM The Economist removes Argentinian inflation statistics from its comprehensive economic statistics reporting, admitting numbers can be dodgy all over the world, but this particular figure is a special case of pure manipulation.
