- Friday, May 17, 1:36 PM For-profit education stocks rally as some bubbling enthusiasm over financial aid legislation is just enough to pressure short sellers in the sector. Gainers: ITT Educational Services (ESI) +10.2%, Career Education (CECO) +11.5%, Corinithian Colleges (COCO) +15.3%, Lincoln Education (LINC) +5.2%, Education Management (EDMC) +5.5%, Bridgepoint Education (BPI)+4.4%, Devry (DV) +3.1%, Capella Education (CPLA) +5.5%, 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 2, 8:26 AM Lincoln Educational Services (LINC): Q1 EPS of -$0.29 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $90.1M misses by $0.23M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Monday, April 29, 9:07 AM Education stocks are in focus after DeVry (DV) announces it will freeze tuition rates for the next academic year. Investors are already skittish on the sector due to federal funding concerns. On watch: CECO, APOL, STRA, COCO, ESI, ITT, BPI, LINC. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, April 26, 3:18 PM For-profit education names are lower across the board, taking a step back after yesterday's gains. This week saw both DeVry (DV -3.7%) and ITT Educational (ESI -10.6%) report significant Y/Y declines in enrollment ( -17% at DV's namesake university and -14.2% total student enrollment at ESI) and today investors seem to be second guessing ESI after Thursday's rally as a price target hike at Barclays ($16) is overshadowed by Compass Point's downgrade and revised target ($12). Sector roundup: (APOL -0.7%), (CECO -3.5%), (STRA -0.5%), (LINC -3.7%), (LOPE -1.2%), (BPI). 1 Comment [On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 6, 8:18 AM Lincoln Educational Services (LINC): Q4 EPS of $0.31 may not be comparable to consensus of $0.09. Revenue of $102.5M beats by $4M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Monday, March 4, 3:18 PM For-profit education stocks sink lower as debate rages in Washington DC over funding for student loans. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 7, 10:12 AM The rocket ride for DeVry (DV +19.5%) following its FQ2 earnings report is providing a lift to the for-profit education sector. Though enrollment numbers still don't look strong, gains with colleges focused on medical and healthcare add a bit of promise. Advancers: APEI +2.1%, APOL +3.3%, CECO +4.4%, COCO +3.2%, ESI +9.4%, STRA +4.6%, LINC +1.4%, LOPE +5.6%, BPI +3.3%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Sunday, January 27, 4:06 AM Wheat inventories on May 31, just prior to the harvest, will total 742M bushels, Allendale forecasts, with the figure 3.6% higher than the USDA's prediction. The firm also reckons output in the 2013/2014 season will slip 2.5% to 2.21B bushels and farmers will increase the amount of acreage plant by 1.4%, but yields will decline 2.4% to 45.2 bushels an acre. (See corn inventories) Comment! [Commodities]
- Wednesday, January 9, 9:49 AM It's a double-digit loss now for Apollo Group (APOL -11%) after its outlook for FY13 doesn't paint a pretty picture. As expected, sector peers are also taking it on the chin. Decliners: DV -6.5%, STRA -5.1%, CECO -2.8%, COCO -1.5%, ESI -3.9%, LOPE -2.1%, LINC -1.2%, EDMC -1.2%, BPI -3.1%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 11:17 AM The selloff in for-profit education stocks is linked to the higher regulation the sector may see under an Obama administration, according to CNBC's Karina Frayter. After the Department of Education adopted a "gainful employment" rule and President Obama signed an executive order to increase transparency, traders may be wondering what's next for the sector in the form of oversight. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, November 5, 2012, 8:27 AM Lincoln Educational Services Corporation (LINC) declares $0.07/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. For shareholders of record Dec. 14. Payable Dec. 31. Ex-div Dec. 12. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Monday, November 5, 2012, 8:07 AM Lincoln Educational Services (LINC): Q3 EPS of -$0.07 misses by $0.03. Revenue of $104.1M (-15.7% Y/Y) beats by $1M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 9:25 AM The student loan issue doesn't look likely to go away no matter which candidate wins the Presidency. A new survey shows the average student-loan borrower graduated with $26.6K of loans in 2011, up 5.3% from 2010. The problem is more pronounced in the for-profit sector with evidence mounting that the bang-for-the-buck offered by online, technical, and secondary degrees is waning. Analyst still think the the sector will have winners and losers, but warn a rocky road in general could lie ahead. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 9:03 AM Education stocks are on watch after Bridgepoint Education reveals it's under investigation by the DOJ. The sector could take a hit with an increasing focus on the practice of companies of tying compensation to recruiting levels. Lawmakers (and taxpayers) are less than thrilled with the prevailing quantity over quality sentiment in the sector. BPI -13.5% premarket. 2 Comments [On the Move, Consumer]
- Friday, September 28, 2012, 2:25 PM Student loan defaults are up for the 5th straight year, according to new data from the Department of Education. Of the 4.1M students who started making payments in late 2009 and early 2010, 9.1% defaulted within two years, up from a level of 8.8% last year. A modicum of good news from the sector is that the default rate of the for-profit sector dropped to 12.9% from 15% last year. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, September 6, 2012, 1:33 PM Education stocks run hot today with broad gains across the for-profit sector. Though it tips to the speculative side, it has to be noted that former President Bill Clinton vigorously defended the confluence of government and education in his speech last night to the Democratic National Convention. (C-Span video) Advancers: APOL +6.7%, CECO +9.9%, STRA +5.9%, COCO +10.1%, LINC +5.7%, EDMC +9.9%, ESI +5.5%. 4 Comments [Consumer]
