Two weeks after Akamai plunged in response to its Q4 report, Limelight (LLNW -10.1%) is doing the same. The CDN owner didn't provide formal guidance to go with its mixed Q4 results, it but did note on the earnings call it expects Q4 to again be its "seasonally strongest quarter." With the Street expecting roughly flat Q/Q revenue growth, that might not be going over well. New CEO Robert Lento also forecasts opex will rise Q/Q thanks to sales spending, and that R&D will rise as a % of sales in 2013.

Akamai (AKAM -15.6%) may have lost CDN video customers to Level 3 (LVLT) due to price competition, thinks Oppenheimer after the company partly blamed its light Q1 guidance on a decision to abandon low-margin media contracts. Akamai has long been trying to stand out from rivals by focusing on higher-margin services in areas such as cloud apps, e-commerce, security, and ad delivery, and new CEO Tom Leighton made it clear in the earnings call he wants to double down, both by giving up on low-margin deals and ramping sales/R&D investments. LLNW -5%.

Akamai (AKAM) guides on its Q4 call for Q1 revenue of $352M-$362M and EPS of $0.50-$0.52; the latter is above a consensus of $0.47, but the former is below a consensus of $370.7M. Akamai blames the top-line guidance on a decision to wind down certain low-margin media delivery contracts, as well as the sale of its ad targeting business and forex. Q4 EPS received a $0.04 boost from a tax rate change, and Q1 EPS is expected to benefit from tax rates and an extended depreciation cycle for servers (400 bps gross margin boost). Shares -15.9% AH. LLNW is likely to fall in sympathy.

More on Netflix: 1) Piper's Michael Olson notes unique visitors to Netflix's (NFLX -2.1%) site fell 4% Y/Y in Q4, per NPD. There's a good chance the total number of unique Netflix users still rose thanks to growing TV/mobile use. Unique visitors to Redbox.com (CSTR +0.2%) fell 13% Y/Y. 2) As part of the buildout of its OpenConnect CDN, Netflix is installing servers on Cablevision's network, thereby lowering bandwidth costs and reducing Cablevision's traffic burden. OpenConnect stands to diminish Netflix's use of CDN services from AKAM, LLNW, and LVLT.

Akamai (AKAM) +6.8% after announcing a long-rumored CDN reseller deal with AT&T (T). The companies say they'll offer "an exclusive suite of global CDN and telecom solutions" that rely on Akamai servers deployed on AT&T's network, and which will be jointly managed. Dan Rayburn reported in August Akamai was willing to guarantee AT&T $100M or more in sales, far more than Limelight (LLNW) was offering. The deal is a coup for Akamai, especially since many carriers are looking to offer home-grown CDNs. (PR)

Akamai (AKAM +3.2%) and Limelight (LLNW +7.7%) are higher after Piper's Michael Olson upgraded Akamai to Overweight, while setting a PT of $40. Olson notes high-margin cloud content delivery services are making up a growing share of Akamai's sales, and thinks CDN service prices have stabilized - that last bit is particularly important for Limelight, since it's very dependent on price-sensitive media CDN services. In spite of decent earnings news, Akamai has been range-bound since July.

Limelight (LLNW -1.2%) has named Robert Lento, until recently the head of Convergys' information management unit, its interim CEO. Chairman Jeff Lunsford announced plans to give up the CEO title earlier this month. Lento will also be directly in charge of Limelight's sales and consulting ops on an interim basis, thanks to the departure of David Hatfield, the EVP of that division. (PR)
