LNKD vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network on the Internet with more than 100 million members in over 200 countries and territories, which currently includes executives from every Fortune 500 company. The company has a diversified business model with revenues coming from member... More

- Friday, July 27, 2012, 9:34 AM Facebook (FB -13.2%) plunges after meeting lowballed estimates, but reporting major slowdowns in Payments growth, Western user growth, and U.S. ad impressions, as well as huge spending hikes. The ad impression drop is fueling concerns the shift to mobile is doing more damage than thought. Analysts are mostly staying positive: Needham expects mobile monetization to improve as advertisers get more comfortable with the platform. ZNGA -2.7%. LNKD -4.7%. RENN -3.1%. (transcript) 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 6:57 PM The next version of Microsoft Outlook (MSFT), shipping as part of Office 2013, will feature tight LinkedIn (LNKD) integration. Profile information and network activity for connections who e-mail a user will automatically appear in his/her inbox. The tie-up should further cement LinkedIn's dominant status in professional social networking, and might also help if the company rolls out a private networking solution to compete with Jive (JIVE) and (ironically) Microsoft's Yammer, as some expect it to. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, July 13, 2012, 9:09 AM As part of the recent sale of Digg, a once-high-flying news-sharing site that was blown away by Facebook and Twitter, the Washington Post (WPO) reportedly ended up buying Digg's team for $12M (previous), and LinkedIn (LNKD) bought 15 of the company's patents for $3.75M-$4M. The site itself went to privately-owned Betaworks for $500K-$725K. Google hired Digg founder Kevin Rose in March. 2 Comments [Tech, M&A, Consumer]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 12:52 PM LinkedIn (LNKD) claims over 160M+ registered users, but on average, their usage rate is far below that of Facebook and Twitter users. The company hopes an upcoming site re-design - LinkedIn's first major overhaul in years - will help narrow that gap. New features encourage checking in for news content, posting status updates, and messaging contacts. Those concepts seem vaguely familiar... 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, July 9, 2012, 1:13 PM Facebook's (FB +3.1%) plan to create a job board in partnership with 3rd-party platforms isn't a threat to LinkedIn (LNKD -5.6%), argue JPMorgan and Topeka Capital. Both firms bring up the preference of users to maintain separate personal and professional social networking profiles, and JPMorgan notes BranchOut, one of Facebook's reported launch partners, has seen a major drop in traffic (per AppData) since April. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, July 9, 2012, 8:41 AM Shares of LinkedIn (LNKD) trade 3.8% lower premarket after reports of a Facebook plan to launch a jobs board on its site crop up to provide a potential competitive overhang. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 26, 2012, 10:07 AM Jive Software (JIVE +4.1%) CEO Tony Zingale boasts he has been receiving calls from customers of rival Yammer who are worried about its sale to Microsoft (MSFT). However, he admits the deal could cause prospective Jive customers to hold off on buying, as they wait to see how Microsoft integrates Yammer with SharePoint. Separately, Capstone predicts LinkedIn (LNKD +1.9%) will offer its own private social networking platform, and notes the company is testing a solution internally. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 1:34 PM It's another good day for recent consumer Internet IPOs, as short-covering and positive commentary help them add to Friday's gains. FB +6.1% GRPN +10.7%. ZNGA +5.6%. P +5%. YELP +2.7%. LNKD +4.7%. While Groupon gets a lift from a Morgan Stanley upgrade, Zynga is benefiting from bullish remarks from Wedbish's Michael Pachter. Pachter joins others in predicting new games will boost user growth, and also expects the monetization of older games to improve in 2H. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 4:03 PM AOL will be shutting down resume-posting site Emurse, which has struggled to compete with LinkedIn (LNKD) and other rivals, as of July 15. AOL, which just fought off an attempt by Starboard Value to win 5 board seats, is trying to streamline its money-losing online media ops. The company shut down social media sharing client Brizzly in March, and is conducting major layoffs at its Patch local news unit. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, June 14, 2012, 6:44 PM The number of global mobile Internet users will exceed the number of desktop users by 2014, claims comScore in a new report, as mobile web usage (heavily driven by Android phones) surges in emerging markets with limited PC Web adoption. The report also notes LinkedIn's (LNKD) U.S. unique visitors rose 67% Y/Y in May, while Facebook's (FB - previous) only rose 4% due to a sky-high penetration rate. 87% of the world's Internet users are now outside the U.S., with 41% in Asia-Pac. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Sunday, June 10, 2012, 3:50 AM LinkedIn (LNKD) yesterday said it has disabled the passwords of the 6.5M accounts that appeared on underground Web sites used by criminal hackers. The company added that has had "no reports of member accounts being breached", nor is it "aware of any member information being published...in connection with the list of stolen passwords." (company blog post) Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 2:09 PM LinkedIn (LNKD -0.7%) underperforms following a report that passwords for 6.5M of its 161M+ accounts had been stolen. A U.K. security company more or less confirms that a breach occurred, and recommends users change their passwords. LinkedIn says it's investigating the issue. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 9:04 AM A security breach at LinkedIn (LNKD) has exposed 6.5M passwords at the site, according to a Norwegian IT site. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 12:15 PM A Citi survey of HR professionals finds user satisfaction with LinkedIn (LNKD -1.9%) rose considerably from August to January: the percentage of respondents stating they plan to "spend more time on LinkedIn than the other recruiting sites" grew to 69% from a mere 29% (ed: that's troubling data for rival MWW). The survey results, along with LinkedIn's strong earnings reports and job listings growth (listings reached 110K in May) leave Citi bullish on the richly-valued company. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 7:43 AM LinkedIn (LNKD) is raised to a Buy at Citigroup, the bank noting its 7 consecutive quarters of 100% revenue growth and the opportunity provided by a 20% sell-off in the stock. Shares +2.1% premarket. (via CNBC's John Melloy) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 24, 2012, 3:48 PM Contributing to today's drop in LinkedIn (LNKD -5.3%) is a cautious note from ITG, which thinks the company's pricing and volume have dipped in Q2. This leads ITG to think LinkedIn, which has beat the guidance set for each of its first 4 post-IPO earnings reports, will only report in-line sales. And that, it thinks, could disappoint investors who have given the company a sky-high valuation. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]

LNKD now trades close to 1000x earnings! It baffles me how investors love top line growth, but do not care about actual EPS growth. - View all 2 replies

Two Arrows Trading: The best part is talking heads slam FB for its valuation, but trumpet LNKD. Both are dung piles IMHO. -
AlphaWulf: Their GAAP earnings last quarter was only 3 cents. I guess it will take a miss for the plunge to finally come around. I am short at 104.50.

AlphaWulf: I will be holding my short at 104.50. This conference call only reaffirmed my assessment of the company. They don't make any money. -
