- Friday, January 25, 11:21 AM Altria (MO), Reynolds American (RAI), and Lorillard (LO) say they will appeal a judge's ruling which orders them to place warnings on their products and websites admitting they misled consumers on the risks of smoking. The unsympathetic judge on the high-profile case ordered the tobacco trio to state: "Tobacco companies intentionally designed cigarettes to make them more addictive." 9 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 22, 1:36 PM It's going to keep getting harder to find a cigarette in 2013 if the state legislatures across the country get their way. Higher cigarette taxes are on the docket in a number of states with traditionally high numbers of smokers. Minnesota in particular, where nearly 16% of the population still smokes, the governor is seeking to boost the state cigarette tax rate to a new rate of $2.83 per pack, a move which is being lauded across the board by anti-smoking advocates. 23 Comments [Healthcare, Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 3:12 AM More on cigarette makers: Between them, Altria (MO), Reynolds American (RAI) and Lorillard (LO) expect to receive over $1.5B in credits that are connected to a 1998 settlement in which tobacco firms agreed to pay over $200B to cover smoking-related health costs. The companies can cut their payments based on market-share losses to rivals that didn't sign the deal. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 10:45 AM Tobacco stocks trade weak as a group with speculation on anti-tobacco measures sweeping across Europe. The word from across the pond is that the EU will step up health warnings. Decliners: Reynolds American (RAI -2.2%), Altria (MO -1.6%), Lorillard (LO -2.6%). 6 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 10:00 AM Lorillard (LO +0.4%) looks like the most attractive tobacco name, according to SA author Matthew Frankel. Though the group as a whole is a dividend seeker's paradise, Lorillard has the best growth track in the sector. Yield watch: Reynolds American 5.51%, Altria 5.29%, Lorillard 5.15%. Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 2:45 AM Judge Gladys Kessler yesterday approved the wording of "corrective statements" that tobacco companies must use in a two-year public advertising campaign in which they have to admit that they lied about the dangers of cigarettes going as far back as 1964. The firms, which are expected to appeal, have argued that such a move violates their free speech rights. 3 Comments [Consumer, Top Stories]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 6:16 PM Lorillard (LO) declares $1.55/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 5.34%. For shareholders of record Nov 30. Payable Dec 10. Ex-div date Nov 28. (PR) 1 Comment [Dividends]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 7:13 AM Lorillard (LO): Q3 EPS of $2.17 misses by $0.06. Revenue of $1.66B (+2.4% Y/Y) beats by $460M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]

- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 10:57 AM Tobacco stocks slump after the Q3 report from Philip Morris (PM -2.9%) comes in sluggish. Despite higher prices, the industry is having trouble keeping demand up as governments start to enact stricter packaging and marketing rules across the globe. Decliners: British American (BTI -0.7%) -0.7%, Lorillard (LO -0.3%) -0.5%, Reynolds American (RAI -0.6%) -0.7%, Altria (MO -1%) -1.1%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 9, 2012, 3:17 PM The DOJ asks a federal appeals court to rehear a case over a FDA requirement that would force tobacco companies to place large graphic health warnings on cigarette packages. Previously, a three-judge panel in Washington backed the ruling of a lower court by finding the mandate infringed on First Amendment free speech protection. The bigger issue: At last count, 46M Americans still smoked despite stepped-up efforts by health organizations to cut into the number and reduced marketing spending by tobacco companies. Has the anti-smoking crusade now cut to the bone? 17 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, September 24, 2012, 7:45 AM A report from the FTC finds that tobacco players Altria (MO), Reynolds American (RAI), and Lorillard (LO) are spending less money on advertising as they focus on pricing. It's a bit of an ironic spot for the industry after companies spent billions to develop brand images - only to see products start to become an impersonal commodity subject to the whims of consumers looking for deals. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 9:48 AM The use of e-cigarettes doesn't increase the risk of heart disease, according to a research study. Though sales in the sub-sector haven't met many of the rosy forecasts put out by tobacco companies, UBS still sees over $500M in revenue getting churned up this year. Players: LO, PM 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Sunday, August 26, 2012, 5:13 AM Electronic cigarettes, which contain electronic tubes that produce nicotine vapor to simulate the effects of smoking, don't appear to be as harmful to the heart as real cigarettes, a small-scale study has found. The results should be positive for manufacturers of the battery-powered products, including Lorillard (LO). 3 Comments [Consumer, Tech, Healthcare]
