DisplaySearch estimates glass consumption by TFT LCD manufacturers such as AUO and LPL will decline 14% Q/Q in Q3, as soft PC and TV demand drives LCD production lower. This is a negative for Corning (GLW), given its reliance on LCD glass sales for over half of its gross profit.

AU Optronics (AUO) is up 4.6% on the day, as the company announces a business restructuring, and the planned merger of Sony (SNE), Hitachi (HIT), and Toshiba's display ops feeds hopes of lower capacity growth and stronger pricing for the LCD panel market. Fellow panel maker LG Display (LPL +1%) is clocking a more modest gain.

Adoption of 3D TVs is finally gaining momentum: DisplaySearch estimates shipments of large, 3D-capable, LCD panels grew 124% Q/Q in Q2, to 5.2M units, and it also expects strong growth in Q3. Panel makers such as LPL and AUO, who are struggling with soft overall demand, benefit from the higher prices attached to 3D-capable panels.

LCD panel maker LG Display (LPL), which cut its 2011 capex forecast last month, is now cutting its 2012 forecast as well, thanks to soft PC and TV sales. Applied Materials (AMAT), which reported soft orders for its display manufacturing gear last week, can't be happy to hear LG's news. However, Wall Street seems pleased - LPL is currently up 5.8%.

Universal Display (PANL) is now up 19.6% on news of its OLED partnership with Samsung (SSNLF.PK). Brigantine is upgrading shares to Buy, believing the company will profit as AUO, LPL, SNE, and others ramp OLED production. While the Samsung deal only involves license fees, PANL could try to collect royalties from other manufacturers.

Though LCD panel manufacturers have been hurt by weak pricing caused from oversupply and soft TV sales, plenty of new capacity is still expected to come on line in China over the next 2 years, fueled by government incentives. This could be good news for TV buyers, but probably not for leading panel makers such as AUO and LPL.

LG Display (LPL) is down 9.5% premarket after taking a beating in Asian markets. A top LG exec says global sales of LCD screens will be lower than the 215M units forecast, although stops short of issuing official guidance. Additional pressure on LG's profits is coming from the appreciation of South Korea's currency against the U.S. dollar.

DisplaySearch is cutting its 2011 TV shipment forecast by 3%, due to weak demand in developed nations. This is a negative not only for LCD glass and panel makers, but also for chipmakers NXP (NXPI) and STMicroelectronics (STM). However, DisplaySearch's forecast that most TVs will ship with LED backlighting by 2014 is a positive for Cree (CREE) and Rubicon (RBCN).

LG Display (LPL +2.2%) reports a $20.2M Q2 net profit - down 96% from last year, but ahead of the ($79.4M) consensus. The company doesn't see demand improving much until early 2012, given weak LCD TV sales, and is cutting its 2011 capex forecast by $948M - not good news for equipment makers such as Applied Materials (AMAT). Hitachi (HIT) will take part in talks with Sony (SNE) and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) to merge their small-size LCD panel businesses. Consolidation in the intensely price-competitive LCD panel market could be good news for other players, such as AU Optronics (AUO) and LG Display (LPL).
