- Wednesday, May 8, 1:20 PM TW Telecom (TWTC +4.5%) jumps as Corvex's Keith Meister (an Icahn protege) tells Ira Sohn he'll be issuing a 13D today disclosing more than a 6% stake in the company. He sees the firm as an acquisition target, possibly by Level 3 (LVLT +5.6%) which is also rising as Meister ticks off the positive developments with respect to its balance sheet. Comment! [Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 9, 1:09 PM A bullish coverage launch from Deutsche leads Level 3 (LVLT +6.2%) to jump above $21. Analyst Brett Feldman is encouraged by continued strength in global IP traffic growth (he sees 4x growth through 2016), and forecasts upcoming "inflection points" in the carrier's revenue, free cash flow, and net income growth, something that should allow it to make good use of the net operating losses (NOLs) it has amassed over the years. Midday top 10 gainers: XRSC +35%. RSOL +31%. STEM +24%. ZIOP +19%. AVP +19%. AMRI +18%. OSBC +16%. DQ +14%. MAS +13%. GILT +12%.
Midday top 10 losers: KVHI -11%. ATAI -11%. LVLT -11%. CLSN -10%. RBPAA -10%. MELA -10%. RVLT -10%. CBMX -10%. QLYS -9%. APRI -8%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, February 12, 9:50 AM Level 3 (LVLT -11.7%) tumbles following its Q4 EPS miss. The company guided for its core network services (CNS) ops, which make up the vast majority of sales, to show a slight Q/Q decline due to seasonality. Also, a Q4 gross margin of 59.4% (+120 bps Y/Y but -20 bps Q/Q) and full-year adjusted EBITDA growth of 20% (at the low end of guidance) might be disappointing some. Level 3 expects "low double digit" adjusted EBITDA growth in 2013. Q4 free cash flow was $202M vs. -$157M a year ago. (PR) (slides) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 7, 1:38 PM Akamai (AKAM -15.6%) may have lost CDN video customers to Level 3 (LVLT) due to price competition, thinks Oppenheimer after the company partly blamed its light Q1 guidance on a decision to abandon low-margin media contracts. Akamai has long been trying to stand out from rivals by focusing on higher-margin services in areas such as cloud apps, e-commerce, security, and ad delivery, and new CEO Tom Leighton made it clear in the earnings call he wants to double down, both by giving up on low-margin deals and ramping sales/R&D investments. LLNW -5%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 9, 10:04 AM Level 3 (LVLT -3.5%) opens lower following a downgrade to Neutral from D.A. Davidson. The firm cites valuation, and a belief EMEA and wholesale sales were flat-to-down in Q4. Yesterday, Dan Rayburn reported Level 3 has won a CDN services deal with Apple to handle a share of its software downloads, including iOS/iTunes content, in the U.S. and Europe. The deal is said to be smaller than the one Apple has with Akamai (AKAM). Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, August 10, 2012, 11:05 AM Goldman has launched coverage on Level 3 (LVLT +5.7%) and JDS Uniphase (JDSU +0.6%) with Buy ratings, though only the former seems to be benefiting Finisar (FNSR +0.7%) and Ciena (CIEN +0.1%) have been started at Neutral. Regarding Level 3, Goldman likes the impact of the Global Crossing acquisition on the company's balance sheet, and believes it could deliver "sustainable" free cash flow for the first time in its history. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 11:42 AM Akamai (AKAM +3.6%) and Limelight (LLNW +3.4%) bounce a little a day after getting clocked on news of Netflix's (NFLX) plans to build a content delivery network (CDN). Akamai, which received only 1% of its 2011 revenue from Netflix, notes Netflix will need to make large investments in both software and infrastructure to produce an effective CDN. Dan Rayburn argues Netflix's move is actually a positive for Limelight and Level 3 (LVLT), given the low margins attached to Netflix sales. (also) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 9:43 AM Akamai (AKAM -7.7%) and Limelight (LLNW -10%) are tumbling on news of Netflix's (NFLX +0.1%) content delivery network (CDN) plans, though fellow CDN owner Level 3 (LVLT -1.8%) is off more modestly. Jefferies thinks Limelight has the most to lose, given Netflix accounted for 11% of its 2011 revenue. Netflix moved away from Akamai in 2010, though its plans could still hurt Akamai by depressing broader demand (and thus pricing) for commodity CDN services. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 8:43 AM A plan by Netflix (NFLX) to roll out its own content delivery network isn't completely blowing away analysts who see the move giving the company greater visibility into future costs - but little actual savings due to the scale involved. NFLX +1.2% premarket, while content delivery network firms will be on watch today with mixed debate on the impact of Netflix's initiative. Premarket: AKAM -4.3%, LLNW and LVLT inactive. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 25, 2012, 5:09 PM Akamai (AKAM) guides on its Q1 earnings call (webcast) for Q2 revenue of $322M-$330M and EPS of $0.36-$0.38; the former is above a consensus of $314.8M, but the latter is below a consensus of $0.39, and is raising new fears of strong price competition in the content delivery network (CDN) space. AKAM -7.4% AH. Rivals LLNW and LVLT could also be volatile in trading tomorrow. 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 15, 2012, 10:59 AM Level 3 (LVLT +4.7%) jumps on an upgrade to Buy from BofA. The firm claims Level 3 has the best risk/reward among the "alternative carriers" it covers, and expects revenue growth in its Core Network Services business, along with the company's operating leverage and synergies from the Global Crossing acquisition, to drive shares higher. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, February 23, 2012, 12:45 PM Level 3 (LVLT +10%) shares pop after Morgan Stanley raises its rating to Overweight from Equal Weight with a $31 price target. The firm sees accelerating revenue growth due to strong secular demand for connectivity, expanded capabilities due to LVLT's Global Crossing acquisition, strong margin expansion and controlled capital spending levels. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 9, 2012, 10:53 AM Level 3 (LVLT +0.7%) ticks up on an upgrade to Outperform at Cowen, citing better visibility on the synergies and costs of its Global Crossing integration. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

Losers: DMND -40%. IRBT -23%. TRIP -16%. ARRY -14%. GRPN -11%. VLNC -8%. AONE -5%. TQNT -5%. KKR -5%. ING -4%. AMSC -3%. PEP -3%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 11:37 AM Level 3 (LVLT +9%) jumps after its Q4 report revealed the debt-laden carrier, which is in the process of digesting Global Crossing, to be in better financial shape than investors feared. Free cash flow for the quarter was $126M, compared with -$34M in the year-ago period. In addition, Level 3 is guiding for adjusted EBITDA to grow 20%-25% in 2012, though it expects free cash flow for the year to be negative. (PR) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
