More on La-Z-Boy (LZB): FQ4 beats on all counts. Net earnings fell 6.6% Y/Y however, as year-ago results were bolstered by a large benefit from antidumping income. Margins improved in the latest period to 33.8% from 31.6%. Retail segment sales, which includes La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries stores, swung to an operating profit of $4M from a year-earlier loss of $1.1M. Same-store written sales rose 11.2%, while wholesale upholstery, the main contributor to its top line, saw revenue grow 8.4% to $289.4M.

More on La-Z-Boy (LZB): Q4 beats across the board on a 10.3% increase in total sales versus the prior year period. Net income rose 14% as its retail segment swung back to profitability. Sales in the unit, which includes La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries stores, swung to an operating profit of $2.67M from a year-earlier loss of $646K. Same-store written sales, which the company tracks as an indicator of retail activity, rose 12%. Wholesale upholstery, a main contributor to its top line, saw revenue rise by 12% to $279.9M. Furniture stocks were hit hard after La-Z-Boy (LZB -12.6%) posted disappointing quarterly results, even as permits for new construction reached a four-year high (I, II) and shares of home builders seem to forecast a housing recovery. The divergence either means the recovery isn’t real or the comeback is being driven by speculative buying of empty foreclosed homes, John Melloy writes.
