- Friday, November 18, 2011, 3:33 PM Veteran fund manager David Winters of Wintergreen Advisers likes to keep a concentrated list of 15 stocks in his value-oriented Wintergreen Fund - tending to hold names for 4-6 years. He stays underweighted in the tech and communications sector, scared off by the "constant change and immense competition." Winters' high conviction buys: PM, RAI, KO, MA, CNQ. Comment! [Quick Ideas, Financials]
- Thursday, November 3, 2011, 6:49 AM Mastercard (MA) CEO Ajaypal Banga says in an earnings CC that it isn't possible to put an "upper limit" on a class action suit against the firm and rival Visa (V) over price-fixing. "While we have made substantial progress with the individual merchant plaintiffs, there has not been similar progress with the class plaintiffs." 1 Comment [Financials]
- Wednesday, November 2, 2011, 2:03 PM MasterCard (MA +5.8%) crushed Q3 estimates, as gross dollar volume of transactions made with its cards increased 18.1% and total transactions rose 20.5%. The concern for the U.S. economy is that the surge in credit card use will lead to a similar uptick in delinquencies and defaults. Credit card use is far outstripping debit card use, possibly indicating that consumers didn’t have the cash. 4 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 2, 2011, 9:56 AM Financials and energy stocks are among this morning's leading sectors after dragging the bottom in the prior session. Financials fell almost 5% yesterday but are up sharply today (XLF +1.8%), led by Mastercard (MA +8.3%) after reporting a strong Q3; Visa (V +2.9%) shares also jump. Energy stocks (XLE +1.9%) also rise after yesterday's 3% loss. Comment! [Financials, Energy]

[On the Move] - Wednesday, November 2, 2011, 8:28 AM More on MasterCard's Q3 report: Gross dollar volume of transactions grew 18.1% Y/Y, up from Q2's 16.4%. 13.6% growth in U.S. dollar volume, 20.4% growth in international volume. Processed transactions rose 20.5%, up from Q2's 17.4%. Free cash flow was $991M, up 72% Y/Y. MA +6.7% premarket. V +2.7%. AXP +2%. (PR) 1 Comment [Financials, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 2, 2011, 8:12 AM MasterCard (MA): Q3 EPS of $5.63 beats by $0.82. Revenue of $1.81B (+27.3% Y/Y) beats by $100M. (PR) 2 Comments [Earnings, Financials]

- Thursday, October 27, 2011, 9:04 AM Sign of the times: Neiman Marcus ends a long tradition of only swiping its own credit cards or those of American Express (AXP), saying that starting on Nov. 1 customers can dare to use their Visas (V) and MasterCards (MA) for purchases. An anonymous sales clerk confirms the high-end department store chain has missed out on sales over the years for its stingy policy. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, October 27, 2011, 8:40 AM MasterCard (MA) beats out Visa (V) in winning the debit card portfolio of regional bank Huntington Bancshares (HBAN). Huntington will replace its 1.5M customers' Visa debit cards with MasterCard-branded Platinum debit cards and expects the conversion to be done by Nov. 1. HBAN +4.6%, MA +2%, V -0.6% premarket. 1 Comment [Financials]
- Wednesday, October 26, 2011, 2:09 PM Bank of China will issue American Express (AXP +1.6%) branded credit cards to its private clients. Transaction processors Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) also have tried to tap China's fast-growing payments industry with some difficulty, but AXP - both a credit card lender and a transaction processor - may do better. 4 Comments [Financials, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 8:08 AM Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) are developing technologies and strategies that will enable them to sell, for use in targeted ads on the Internet, insights gained from the billions of credit-card purchases they process. Because of privacy restrictions, the information sold would be based on anonymous data. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 4:23 PM Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA) stand accused of price-fixing in a lawsuit filed by a trade association. The allegations were brought forward by the National ATM Council in connection to fees charged to banks on ATM transactions by the payment companies. Comment! [Financials]
- Tuesday, October 4, 2011, 5:51 PM Jefferies forecasts higher credit losses at American Express (AXP) and Capital One (COF), prompting a lower rating and price target on both companies. The loss of $880M in annual legal payments from Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA) will inhibit AXP's earnings growth in 2012; COF shares are cheap but the impact of higher credit losses isn't yet priced in. Comment! [Financials]
- Tuesday, October 4, 2011, 7:57 AM Jefferies is lowering its PT on American Express (AXP) to $50, while reiterating a Neutral. The firm thinks credit markets will begin to normalize in early 2012, and that this will drive AmEx's credit losses and provision expenses higher. It also sees the pending loss of $880M in annual legal payments from V and MA inhibiting earnings growth. Comment! [Financials, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, September 22, 2011, 10:46 AM Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) will raise debit-card fees for small-ticket purchases to the full amount allowed under new rules, Janney Montgomery Scott predicts. The change “will kill the economics for small-ticket debit purchases and influence a shift back to credit cards, [and] will almost certainly lead to a merchant revolt against the card networks." 5 Comments [Financials, Consumer]
