Saturday, May 4, 3:52 PM Barron's is out with its list of the 500 financially strongest companies as ranked after a rigorous cash and sales analysis. A quick filter on the list shows a good chunk of the names trade with a single-digit price to earnings ratio including Goodyear Tire & Rubber (GT). Despite all the buzz about booming auto sales in the U.S. and China, concerns about growth for Goodyear's products in other regions of the globe have lowered expectations. But with auto sale estimates for full-year being taken higher, Goodyear could see enough consistent revenue growth to justify a higher trading multiple. Tuesday, April 9, 6:15 AM The European Commission is investigating for MasterCard (MA) over whether its inter-bank fees for non-European cardholders violate the EU's antitrust regulations. Monday, March 18, 5:16 PM A Nomura note predicting higher card fees for PayPal (previous) helped eBay (EBAY -0.6%) make fresh 2013 lows. "Payment networks are taking the gloves off," writes Nomura. With PayPal's rapid growth and offline expansion efforts making it a bigger rival to Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA), "the incumbents will do everything in their power to prevent PayPal from riding on their rails without extracting a toll." Monday, February 25, 1:48 PM Samsung's Galaxy S IV will support NFC payments for Visa (V) credit and debit accounts, courtesy of Visa's PayWave app. The tie-up is part of a broader partnership the companies estimate will cover 100M NFC-enabled Samsung devices over the next 12 months. Separately, MasterCard (MA) is unveiling MasterPass, a multi-card mobile payments platform that supports both NFC and other contactless technologies. Monday, February 25, 11:30 AM MasterCard (MA -0.5%) reveals more details of its new mobile payments initiative, saying a virtual wallet will allow customers to scan items as they meander through stores and show a proof of payment via their phone as the exit.
