- Friday, May 10, 12:10 PM "We expect to be in a position to write business and add to shareholder value in the near future," says MBIA (MBI -3.1%) CFO Chuck Chaplin, talking about National Public Finance on the earnings call (transcript). This week's settlements have a "huge impact" on National capital adequacy, he says, and the unit's marketing, underwriting, and servicing platforms are ready to begin firing again. 1 Comment [Financials, On the Move]
- Friday, May 10, 10:55 AM MBIA's (MBI -2.1%) earnings report is a good excuse to take just a few profits after a 50%+ run the past few sessions following the BofA settlement. Analysis of the company has shifted from survival assessment to future prospects, writes BTIG's Mark Palmer. Key, he says, will be management plans for extracting value from MBIA Insurance. Even attaching zero value to the unit, he rates MBIA a Buy with $22 price target. 1 Comment [Financials, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 7, 9:54 AM Radian Guaranty (RDN +1.9%) delinquency data for April shows ending delinquent inventory of 81,577 loans vs. 85,109 at the month's start. New insurance written during the month of $4.12B. Mortgage insurers continue to bask in the glow of MBIA's (MBI +0.8%) settlement with BofA yesterday. MGIC (MTG +2.9%), Assured Guaranty (AGO +1.1%). (PR) Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
- Monday, May 6, 12:54 PM More on the BofA/MBIA settlement: Bank of America (BAC +4%) will pay MBIA's mortgage insurance arm about $1.6B plus some IOUs, bringing the total amount to $1.7B, reports the WSJ. Additionally, the bank will take about a 5% stake in the holding company, MBIA (MBI +41.9%). It's a win-win as MBIA Insurance gets a lifeline and BofA removes the potential of a far larger award at trial. Congrats to BTIG's Mark Palmer and keen bloggers like Christian Herzeca who recognized MBIA's legal "loss" last week as a big push for BofA to get this thing settled. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]

Midday top 10 gainers: MBI +41%. FSGI +32%. ABFS +31%. MNGA +25%. YRCW +22%. BORN +16%. PRMW +15%. CHLN +14%. RENN +14%. YY +14%.
Midday top 10 losers: PAL -18%. HGSH -11%. GEOS -9%. LNCO -9%. LINE -9%. CHCI -9%. VISN -8%. OSH -8%. TG -7%. LTBR -7%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Monday, May 6, 12:16 PM MBIA (MBI +40.7%) soars on a rumored settlement with Bank of America (BAC +3.2%) over mortgage putback issues. BofA will reportedly take a 5% stake in MBIA, paying $1.65B along with a $500M credit line. 10 Comments [Breaking News, Financials, On the Move]
- Monday, May 6, 10:20 AM Assured Guaranty (AGO +3.2%) pops after UBS agrees to pay $358M to settle claims over questionable MBS the bank issued and Assured guaranteed. The cash, says Mark Palmer, will allow Assured to buy back shares continuing to trade at a massive discount to book value. A settlement with Credit Suisse (CS) may be next. MBIA (MBI +3.5%) jumps as well. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 2, 8:04 AM MBIA (MBI) slides 3.2% premarket as NY state regulators may be within "weeks or perhaps days" of seizing its rapidly running out of money mortgage insurance arm, reports the NYPost. Regulatory chief Ben Lawsky is reportedly interviewing advisers to help it seize the business. (Previous: MBIA is not granted summary judgement in BofA suit). 2 Comments [Financials, Breaking News, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 30, 11:54 AM MBIA (MBI -5.8%) investors are disappointed at not winning summary judgement in the case against Bank of America, but the ruling as a whole sends "a very strong message to BAC about how difficult it would be for it to win at trial," writes Mark Palmer. He still expects BofA to cut a deal either out of self-interest or after being forced to the table by regulators. MKM Partners agrees and maintains its Buy rating and $18 price target. 2 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Monday, April 29, 7:49 PM MBIA (MBI) sinks 5.5% AH after it fails to win summary judgement against Bank of America's (BAC) Countrywide unit in a lawsuit over whether the bank breached its obligations to repurchase loans. Attorney Christian Herzeca notes the judge found each point of law in MBIA's favor, but as "sufficient facts remain in dispute," a trial is necessary. 1 Comment [Financials, On the Move]

After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: HTWR +9%. TXRH +8%. MGT +3%. USLV +3%. BWLD +2%.
After-hours top losers: MCO -8%. RVBD -7%. NSPR -7%. MBI -6%. BAH -3%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Monday, March 4, 1:11 PM MBIA (MBI +24%) soars after after a NY state judge denies Bank of America's (BAC) petition to overturn the insurer's 2009 restructuring. This ruling doesn't appear to affect a parallel suit between the two regarding putbacks. 5 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 27, 4:51 PM More on MBIA (MBI) Q4 earnings: Adjusted book value of $30.68/share, up marginally from Q3, down from $34.50 a year ago. "MBIA's (liquidity and capital) forecast assumes a comprehensive settlement with BofA ... and the collection of a substantial portion of MBIA's put-back claims against BofA/Countrywide ... (we) believe it is more likely than not that a timely settlement will be reached." Shares +3.2% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Financials, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 6, 9:29 AM MBIA (MBI) gains 6.7% after Judge Rakoff issues what may be a precedent-setting ruling in Assured Guaranty vs. Flagstar. The ruling - says a lawyer - puts to rest the main argument MBS originators like BofA and JPMorgan have put forth to counter insurers' claims their breaches of representations and warranties did not cause losses. BAC and JPM both down about 1% premarket. 6 Comments [Financials, On the Move]

Wednesday, February 6, 9:12 AM
Premarket gainers: SFLY +17%. MUSA +13%. GDP +12%. AAV +8%. MBI +6%. CERN +5%. ZNGA +5%.
Losers: CHRW -7%. GME -5%. 6 Comments [On the Move] - Tuesday, January 15, 11:57 AM MBIA (MBI) looks to have come close to default, with NY State denying its request to make a scheduled interest payment due today. "No interest will accure on the deferred interest," according to the 8-K. Initially diving on the news, shares have returned to about unchanged. Comment! [Financials, Breaking News, On the Move]

Well $MBI is doing very well, though it is still undervalued here, not by too much though lol! Staying long, might trim a bit though. - View all 0 replies

Ocean Man: I'm still trying to get to that point where I don't use exclamation points when one of mine goes up 40% in one day. :) -
Dr. Kris: Interesting to note that the stock jumped 10% in the two minutes before it was halted at 12:09pm ET pending the announcement.

Like $MBI but concerned about lawsuits and cash? Short some LEAP puts, quite a nice amount of protection there to say the least. - View all 0 replies

Closed out my MBI position today, potential liquidity shortfall and now BAC is offering to buy their bonds at par...to cause trouble... - View all 4 replies

DeepValueLover: OK. but I still am having trouble figuring out how MBIA runs out of liquidity all of a sudden. What has changed from a capital standpoint? -
Tom Armistead: Financials have disclosed the risk for some time, it was always there. Payments of RMBS claims continue, BAC continues to stall settlement.
