Company Description
Mobile TeleSystems CJSC, or MTS CJSC, our predecessor, was formed in 1993. The founding shareholders included MGTS and three other Russian telecommunications companies, which collectively held 53% of our original share capital, and two German companies, Siemens AG and T-Mobile Deutschland GmbH,... - Tuesday, April 2, 2:19 PM Russian carriers Vimpelcom (VIP +3.3%) and MTS (MBT +0.6%) remain committed to bidding for buying rival Tele2 Russia, even though Tele2 Russia's parent company has effectively dismissed their $4B-$4.25B offer. Sweden-based Tele2 says it was aware of all options before agreeing to sell ts Russian ops to state bank VTB for $3.5B in a deal that gives it rights (for 12 months) to half of any profits VTB gets from a resale. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, March 28, 1:56 PM Russian mobile carriers VimpelCom (VIP +0.2%) and Mobile TeleSystems (MBT +0.3%) are prepared to offer $4B-$4.25B for rival Tele2 Russia, Bloomberg reports. Though Sweden-based Tele2 has already agreed to sell its Russian ops to local bank VTB for $2.4B + assumed debt, there have been reports of third-party interest. Billionaire Mikhail Fridman's Alfa Group might also join the fray. Comment! [Tech, M&A, Breaking News]
- Tuesday, March 19, 7:09 AM Mobile TeleSystems (MBT): Q4 Net income of $547M. Revenue of $3.17B beats by $0.04B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 8:40 AM No. 2 Russian mobile carrier MegaFon has seen its shares fall 2% in London and Moscow on their first day of trading, after raising $1.7B in an IPO that was Europe's second-largest this year (after Telefonica Deutschland). MegaFon, which sold a 15.2% stake at an $11.2B valuation, competes with top Russian carrier MTS (MBT) and No. 3 VimpelCom (VIP). Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 6:56 AM Mobile TeleSystems (MBT): Q3 Net income of $630M. Revenue of $3.13B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
- Friday, November 25, 2011, 11:15 AM Mobile TeleSystems (MBT +4%) trades up after UBS raises its rating to Buy on the shares, citing the company's solid growth and reliable dividend stream. UBS notes that Russian service revenue grew 7.8% Y/Y in Q3 despite cost-cutting measures, and data revenue is consistently growing 50%. If this continues, it could support a higher growth multiple in 2012. Comment! [Global & FX, Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, August 4, 2011, 8:01 AM Gartner sees the number of mobile connections worldwide rising to 7.4B in 2015 from 5B in 2010, with mobile data revenue rising 115% along the way. Mobile data has been driving revenue growth for T, VZ and S, but the largest beneficiaries of these trends will likely be carriers in developing markets, such as CHL, CHU, MBT, and AMX. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 8:51 AM Foreign investment into Russia is focusing on the emerging consumer, rather than seeing the country as a play on energy and materials. Russia is on track to have the largest consumer market in Europe within a decade, meaning it cannot be ignored by any global consumer goods or financial player. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Thursday, December 2, 2010, 4:15 PM Exposure to fast-growing Russia can be a good idea for your portfolio, but the available ETFs may just be closet energy funds. Emerging Money has put together a basket of individual stocks that balances energy with exposure to the Russian consumer and telecommunications industries. 2 Comments [Global & FX]
