Monday, June 3, 5:33 PM Microchip (MCHP) +4.5% after raising its FQ1 (ends June 30) guidance. The microcontroller vendor now expects 4%-7% Q/Q sales growth and EPS of $0.52-$0.56; that's better than prior guidance of 2%-6% growth and EPS of $0.50-$0.54, and largely above a consensus of $447.7M and $0.52. Microchip, often seen as a bellwether for chip stocks (SOXX, SMH), says it has "continued to see a very strong bookings and business environment," has "received excellent visibility" from customers, and is returning employees to work faster than expected to keep inventories from falling too low. Monday, June 3, 2:37 PM Microchip's (MCHP +0.1%) Silicon Storage unit (acquired in 2010) is buying memory IP developer Novocell Semiconductor. Terms are undisclosed, but Microchip says the deal will be immediately accretive. Novocell specializes in creating designs for one-time programmable memory that can deliver superior reliability thanks to its use of antifuse tech. Monday, November 26, 2012, 7:56 AM A fund backed by the Japanese government is set to pay $2.2B to buy 2/3 of chipmaker Renesas (RNECY.PK) from current owners Mitsubishi, NEC, and Hitachi, a source tells the Nikkei. Renesas, which rose 16.6% in Tokyo on the report, would reportedly shutter factories and cut as many as 5K jobs as part of the deal. Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 6:25 PM Microchip (MCHP) may not grab a lot of tech gadget headlines, but its new MGC3130 chip could be a big deal if widely adopted. The $2.26 chip uses electrical fields to recognize hand gestures in 3 dimensions within a 6-inch range, and can do so while consuming 90% less power than a camera-based alternative.
