MCP vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
We are the only REO producer in the Western hemisphere and own the world’s largest, most fully developed rare earth project outside of China. Furthermore, following the execution of our “mine-to-magnets” strategy and completion of our modernization and expansion efforts, we expect to be one of... More

- Thursday, August 2, 2012, 5:21 PM Molycorp (MCP): Q2 EPS of -$0.03 misses by $0.11. Revenue of $104.6M (+5% Y/Y) misses by $11M. Prices "stabilized or declined at a much slower pace" in Q2. Company reaffirms annual production forecast of 8K-10K metric tons of REO equivalents. $306M in capex expected for remainder of year. Shares -8.6% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Commodities, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, July 23, 2012, 11:57 AM Shares of Molycorp (MCP -5.6%) hit a 52-week low as the WTO reportedly launches an investigation into China’s export quotas and tariffs on rare earths, tungsten and molybdenum. The average Chinese export price of rare earth oxides soared 537% in 2011 vs. 2010 and was 10% higher Y/Y in the first five months of 2012, according to Bloomberg data. REE -3.7%, AVL -1.4%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, July 9, 2012, 11:17 AM J.P. Morgan's Michael Gambardella cuts his price target on Molycorp (MCP -4.6%) to $19.50/share from $23, questioning whether MCP overpaid for its $1.3B acquisition of Neo Material. The analyst sees strategic value to establishing a big base in China, but he thinks the takeover may turn out to be too expensive if the supply chain becomes oversupplied and prices keep falling. 5 Comments [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Friday, July 6, 2012, 2:36 PM While downgrading Avalon Rare Metals (AVL), Dahlman Rose's Anthony Young finds two stocks he likes in the rare earth sector: Molycorp (MCP) and Rare Element Resources (REE). The two have the "highest likelihood" of completing projects and generating cash flow in the current environment, he says. 1 Comment [Commodities]
- Thursday, July 5, 2012, 5:05 PM Rare earth stocks give up much of their big early gains that followed a report of China hoarding the materials as prices continue to fall. Upon closer scrutiny, little is known about how much is going to stockpiles, whether exports will cease, how China would get prices up without foreign customers and whether it will exempt Chinese end-users. MCP +1.1%, AVL +2.5%, REE +1.7%. 2 Comments [Commodities]
- Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 10:57 AM Rare earth stocks (REMX +1%) extend yesterday's gains as rumors of tighter regulation on rare earth mining production from Chinese authorities gain traction, with a new report from Xinhua sparking further interest today. MCP +8.8%, REE +6.8%, AVL +5.2%. 2 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 4:42 PM China's new tax permits on rare earth miners (REMX +3.3%) there will enable the government to control supply "to a certain extent" by forcing producers to sell their finished products based on production and export quota allocations, Rahul Jalan writes. Previous efforts to control rare earths have sent prices outside China skyrocketing, but today's market reaction could foreshadow a different outcome. 1 Comment [Commodities]
- Thursday, June 14, 2012, 2:58 PM With many rare-earth stocks (REMX) near 52-week lows, now may be the time to dig in to sector bargains, Jacob Securities' Luisa Moreno says. Prices for rare-earth elements "are approaching levels which are economic again," so she sees demand starting to pick up and prices stabilizing in H2. It may take time to affect stocks, but she likes MCP, TAS, MTCEF.PK, LYSCF.PK. 4 Comments [Commodities, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 4:12 AM Molycorp (MCP) said yesterday it has completed its takeover of Canadian rare earth processor Neo Material Technologies, creating an integrated mine-to-magnetics company. It's a win-win, analyst Jon Hykawy told clients, as "not only should it significantly improve Molycorp's earnings but it also de-risks the start-up of Molycorp's own (processing) facility." 3 Comments [Commodities]
- Friday, June 8, 2012, 4:41 PM An end to China's monopoly on rare earth minerals (REMX) is in sight, Paul Martyn writes. North America has quietly invested significant money and resources into the domestic mining of rare earths, he says, with 35 projects at various stages of development outside China; even a 10% shift in market share would have a positive ripple effect on U.S. manufacturing and technology. 3 Comments [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 8:27 AM Molycorp's (MCP) target price is raised to $55 from $50 at Dahlman Rose based upon the anticipated closure of the company's deal with Neo Materials. The firm likes the downstream processing assets MCP acquired and believes earnings will be more stable throughout the cycle because of the acquisition. MCP +4.3% premarket. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Monday, May 14, 2012, 10:35 AM Molycorp (MCP) plans to raise up to $650M of senior secured notes, which it will use to help finance its $1.3B takeover of Neo Material Technologies (NEMFF.PK). Comment! [Commodities]
- Monday, May 14, 2012, 10:24 AM Gabelli's note in defense of its Hold rating on Molycorp (MCP) sounds more like a Buy, despite a slight slide in Q1 earnings. The firm cites several milestones achieved, including the start-up of its new Mill, Flotation Separator, and Paste Tailings Facility at Mountain Pass. While the stock remains speculative, the firm calls MCP "the best vehicle to gain exposure to the rare earth industry.” 2 Comments [Commodities, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, May 10, 2012, 4:08 PM Molycorp (MCP): Q1 EPS of $0.18 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $84.5M (+222% Y/Y) misses by $31M. Shares -2.9% AH. (PR) 7 Comments [Commodities, Earnings]
