Molycorp (MCP +4.7%) is upgraded to Strong Buy at Byron Capital, which sees it as in the best position to reap benefits as companies seek out reliable sources of rare earth minerals outside of China. Long-term, the firm doesn't think rare earth prices will decline below historical price levels, and thinks end users will find value.

Molycorp (MCP) +1.8% AH after surging 16% during regular trading, as other rare earth (REMX) names also rose today: REE +11.7%, AVL +15.2%. A Euro Pacific analyst ties the move to reports from China that say the price increase in rare earth relates to a government campaign to shut down unlicensed mines in China's Ganzhau; funds may be buying a basket of related companies. Goldman's Brian Lee expects shares of Molycorp (MCP +7.3%) "will trade higher in the near-term given the removal of [the SEC] overhang" (previous). Nevertheless, the "fundamentals [are] relatively challenging," he says, as MCP "ramps toward full-scale Phase I production at its Mountain Pass facility [and as] rare earth prices have begun to experience declines in recent months." In other words: Investors may want to curb their enthusiasm after today's gains.

Demand for rare earth oxides has troughed, which could be good news for Molycorp (MCP) after another 12% decline in prices during May, Morgan Stanley says, but additional supply from MCP and Lynas in H2 of this year could put prices back under pressure. The firm keeps its Equal Weight rating on MCP but raises its Q2 EPS estimate to a $0.25 loss from a $0.30 loss. MCP +2% premarket.

China's exports of rare earth metals have rallied in recent months, a trend attributed to low rare earth prices and Japanese demand. But Molycorp (MCP -2.9%), whose shares have jumped 30% in the past two weeks, says it might be premature to assume a firm turnaround in global demand: "Inventories have been built up over the past several years, and they are returning to more normal levels now."

Molycorp (MCP) +5.4% premarket on a report that China exported 2,196 metric tons of rare earth in April, a 28% rise from March, and 6,112 tons in the first four months of this year, double the year-ago volume. The data indicates bargain hunting may be reviving global demand for rare earth metals.

Molycorp (MCP +35.5%) shares are at the day's high after better-than-expected Q1 results, but at least some analysts remain cautious. Stifel Nicolaus cuts its 2013 earnings forecast on an assumed sales volume decline in part of MCP's business and more conservative pricing. Goldman Sachs shares concerns about pricing until the integration of its chlor-alkali plant later this year.
