    An explosion reported at a West Virginia coal mine operated by a subsidiary of Massey Energy (MEE), though there are no details yet of injured or trapped miners. MEE -1.4% AH. Updated 6:45 p.m.: The state mine director says six are dead and 21 unaccounted for; MEE -4.3% AH.

    Massey Energy (MEE) says it's buying private Virginia coal producer Cumberland Resources for $960M in cash and stock, a deal that it says "will be accretive to earnings per share beginning this year." MEE down 2.4% AH.

    Stocks rose sharply as advancers outpaced decliners on the NYSE by 5.1 to 1. It was the best week of the year for the three major indices: Dow +2.3%, S&P +3.1%, Nasdaq +3.9%. Among individual stocks, the two top S&P percentage gainers were Dean Foods (DF +6.2%) and Massey Energy (MEE +6.0%).
