49 Stocks For Buffett Fans [view article]
I am a prime example of what can happen if you are away from your computer for 1 weeks time. Out hiking with all of God's beautiful creatures and my shares of FCX had a hurrican run right through them and I am trying to muck out the aftermath. There were others that shared in this pummeling as well. I welcome, even embrace a bull run even if it's a minor bear retracement. Give me half of this weeks loss back and I will be completely happy. Use my experience as a lesson. To keep Buffet's track record in tact.. it appears to be a prudent contrarian, and totally buy into weakness. I would call this incredible weakness in many sectors. I will do this to hedge what losses I have incurred. There is my Buffet plan. Now to act on it. Reply

Jeff -- note that it was Business Week magazine that selected the list of 49 stocks as Buffet-like. We just filtered the list further in terms of S&P and ValueLine opinions as to general appeal. Certainly, Buffet uses criteria and judgement in his selections that a simple 5 attribute screen cannot capture. Our intent was merely to help those who read the Business Week article by letting them know more about the stocks in the list, but not to judge the realism of Business Week's construction of the list. This final 13 is most un-Buffettlike. Let's begin with the obvious fact that Buffett doesn't own them.

A core tenet of Buffett investing is "buying what one understands". He has scrupulously avoided tech stocks as being "too hard".

He doesn't like mining because at the end, the commodidty mined is gone and shareholders are left with "the hole".

Buffett likes stocks with a competitive moat, preferably one with "alligators in it".

Finally, businesses should have capable, shareholder friendly boards and management. Their interests should be squarely aligned with those of shareholders.

There are a number of fine companies on your list. Some of which I have owned, I can't see any being strong Buffett candidates.

As for SLB, we had a 2m barrel of oil, short-side surprise on Friday, and now another LOOP threatening hurricane entering the GOM this week. I know Bush gave the okay Wednesday to use the Strategic Oil reserves, but these delivery disruptions at some point, overwhelm our ability to subsidize. Reply

The short answer is that you missed the opportunity at 10:00 am on Friday, to buy under $69. With Ike projected to enter the GOM, FRE/FNM bailout projected to cost the government trillions, inflation looming, a rate cut in response to more banking troubles, even more inflation looming, and hedge fund sell-offs done, we're resuming the commodity bull market on Monday. good questions to ask before you decide to buy. computer screened lists are just the beginning of research -- basically a way to narrow the field of needed manual research Reply

where is FCX going from here? wow what a punishment for those who bought it at its high. I am looking at it every single day and ,since I don t own it, have been tempted to buy it. At which point can we start to buy it?
Is their dividend safe? Are the price of copper and gold going much lower
near term? How about long term? What the history of their dividend?

    Paultaut,,

So is iron, copper, gold, silver, ALL ore requires refining. So why should sililcon "ore" be any different. Don't be so lazy... refine and pusify.

PS in the face of rising demand, and with essentially unlimited supply of raw ore, build the facilities to meet the demand AND = THEY WILL COME.

Seriously I do not understands the point of these comments of yours.

PS recycling "old panels" for their materials is also a growing and profitable business.

You can walk in every desert in the world and scoop up that sand, But you can't use it without extensive purifying which translates into shortages and higher prices.

We have an abundant supply of Coal, big deal, without cleaning it properly, it may as well stay in the ground. The same thing holds for Solar, Sand is useless in its present form. It is a "feedstock". Think in terms of the costs surrounding 100% contamination free Clean Rooms and expanding these Rooms to Manufacturing Facility size. These facilities do not exist to provide all of the Panels needed for the expansion all of you seem to think is exponential.

That's why I prefer vertically integrated Solar companies which will produce for themselves first and sell excess production.

Isn't the continued drop is solar prices a given?! That's what the whole expectation of reaching grid parity is all about. I don't understand why this is being eccepted as new news. Reply

    Paulaut,

To your comment "where are the 5-10G computers that were supposed to be on the shelves by now"

That's why I saidthe "old computers had the capaicy but not the power of today's laptops.

The cheap price/performance of cheaps went into bigger chips, faste chips, more graphics capability, wireless etc. = and still the price continues to drop and price/performance improves, funtoinality increases and ever more units are sold.

IMO same will happen in solar, And already effeciency ratios are improving dramatically (1 sunny day of ergs in = much more useful watts out) That's Watt's it all about -as they say in physics.

PS th material for solar panels is abundant and it will come from the Earth - go take a walk in the Mojave desert and you'll figure out the answer to your question.

Every month, the Sun pours more energy onto the Earth than mankind has used up since the DAWN of his existence.

Long Run has nothing to do with the next 6 months or 12 for that matter. Solar will be great eventually, As Will wind. I'm long YGE and Clipper Windpower for the next 5 years.

Moore's Law? Where are the 5-10 G computers that were supposed to be on the shelves by now. That Law went into a different direction...the number of cores on a CPU.

Where will all of the material for the solar panels come from that will be needed to reduce the prices ala Moore's Law?

    Supershort,

I get revenue growth in excess of 55% a year, I get profitabiliy and improvements in profitability of 20% a year +/-
I get that ALL Presidential Candidates AND CONGRESS on both sides of the aisle = favors solar energy industry as an essential alternative to oil.

What do you get supershort = a Giant wedgie!!!!!!!

You are standing in the water trying to turn back the tide. Start swimming with the tide, because it ain't stopping for you.
