Mellanox (MLNX) is acquiring Kotura, a developer of silicon photonics interconnect tech, for $82M in cash. The deal, which is expected to be accretive to 2014 EPS by $0.01-$0.03, is noteworthy in light of Intel's (INTC) efforts to both develop both InfiniBand solutions and 100G silicon photonics interconnects for its server CPU platforms, with the goal of creating more modular server architectures. This purchase seems aimed at trying to meet that long-term threat.

In adding Apple (AAPL +0.9%) to its Most Preferred list, UBS names dividend/buyback hikes, a low-end iPhone, and a calendar Q4 China Mobile deal as possible catalysts. Separately, the firm has replaced H-P (HPQ +0.3%) with Fusion-io (FIO -0.9%) on its Least Preferred list, citing concerns Fusion-io's forecast for 40% Q/Q growth in the June quarter may prove optimistic. Apple is replacing Mellanox (MLNX +0.2%) on the Most Preferred list - UBS doubts much positive news will be provided on Mellanox's Q1 call.

To address the needs of the supercomputer/HPC market, Intel (INTC) plans to integrate networking and storage controllers onto future Xeon CPUs; the chip giant foresees both performance and space/power benefits. Intel also wants to create a new interconnect fabric for HPC systems by tying together the work of multiple product groups - product lines purchased from Cray and QLogic could help, as might the Fulcrum Microsystems acquisition. Intel's plans could pose a risk to Mellanox (MLNX). Update: Commenter York Maksik notes LSI's storage controller card business could also be hurt by Intel's plans. PMC-Sierra's (PMCS) Adaptec unit also competes in this space. (also)

Jannazy $MLNX probably will go to $36 range again when the correction comes. Worse stock ever! Highly speculative. $24 is probably best entry point
