- Wednesday, January 2, 4:43 PM Mellanox (MLNX) has resumed trading following its big Q4 warning. Shares are currently down 20.1% to $48.92. That leaves them down 59% from September's all-time high, but still up 48% from where they stood a year ago. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 2, 4:15 PM Mellanox (MLNX) warns it expects Q4 revenue of $119M-$121M, well below prior guidance of $145M-$150M and a consensus of $148.3M. The company blames weaker demand, macro issues, and a "technical issue" related to cables for its 56 Gb/s InfiniBand hardware that caused $20M in orders to be delayed; Mellanox claims the cabling issue is fixed. Shares are halted, expect a big move lower. (institutional selling: I, II) 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move, Breaking News]
- Thursday, December 27, 2012, 12:52 PM Shorts are betting against Teradata (TDC): the data warehousing firm saw its short interest rise 65% in the 2-week period ending Dec. 15, Credit Suisse reports. Mellanox (MLNX), recently reported to be seeing heavy institutional selling, saw a 30% jump, and Atmel (ATML) a 24% increase. Also: Jive Software (JIVE) now has 28.9% of its float shorted, and ServiceNow (NOW) 38.5%. Are the shorts right, or will longs benefit from giant short squeezes down the road? 4 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 12:32 PM Mellanox (MLNX -6.7%) gives back yesterday's Oracle-fueled gains after Israel's Globes reports of heavy institutional selling, something its sources attribute to expectations Q4 and perhaps Q1 results will miss expectations. The paper notes short interest has soared, and suggests a CFO change and "conservative" commentary at presentations has institutions on edge. Shares have already been crushed thanks to soft Q4 guidance. Barclays remains bullish, arguing demand for low-latency, high-speed, data center connectivity will continue driving growth. - Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 11:31 AM Some enterprise software names are rallying in the wake of Oracle's (ORCL +3.4%) FQ2 beat, which was fueled by strong software license sales. VMW +3.7%. WDAY +2.9%. SPLK +2.6%. INFA +2.2%. JIVE +3.5%. Also, Mellanox (MLNX +4.9%) is getting a lift from the strong performance of Oracle's engineered systems business. Oracle noted on its earnings call its app license growth was north of 30%. Goldman estimates total license growth received a 600 bps boost from acquisitions, but is still impressed. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

Premarket gainers: PTNR +11%. GM +9%. KCG +8%. RMCF +6%. NBG +6%. VRNG +6%. MLNX +5%.
Losers: ONTY -61%. PLXT -18%. NAV -6%. CYS -6%. 3 Comments [On the Move] - Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 11:17 AM Oracle (ORCL -0.6%) will beat Street estimates when it reports FQ2 results next Tuesday, says Credit Suisse. The firm cites healthy application license sales and strong growth for its high-end engineered systems (Exadata, Exalytics, etc.) - the latter would be a positive for Mellanox (MLNX). Oracle's engineered systems sales doubled Y/Y in FQ1, but total hardware sales still fell 19% as demand for storage gear and traditional Sun UNIX servers withered. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 2:48 PM Emulex (ELX +3.8%) is higher thanks to an upgrade to Overweight from Stephens. Rivals QLogic (QLGC +2%) and Mellanox (MLNX +4.6%) are also up - the latter might be getting a lift from a deal to supply 40 Gb/s InfiniBand adapter cards and switches for Teradata's (TDC) Aster Big Analytics Appliance, which competes with Oracle's Big Data Appliance (it also uses Mellanox gear). Emulex fell last week after announcing it's acquiring network monitoring hardware firm Endace. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 10:40 AM Mellanox (MLNX -1.4%) is adding to its recent losses after UBS starts coverage at Neutral, arguing strong fundamentals are offset by a full valuation. At 16x FY13E EPS, Mellanox isn't exactly a value play, but is nowhere as richly priced as it was a couple months ago, before shares were clobbered thanks to soft Q4 guidance and fears of competition from Intel. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, December 3, 2012, 11:04 AM Storage adapter card/switch vendors QLogic (QLGC -8.1%) and Emulex (ELX -4.8%) are down hard after receiving downgrades to Sell (I, II) from Goldman: the firm thinks QLogic's FY13 targets are at risk due to macro issues, and is worried about the impact of investment needs, macro, and litigation risk on Emulex's near-term performance. Shares of both companies have fared poorly in recent months. Mellanox (MLNX -3.2%), which competes with QLogic and Emulex in the Ethernet adapter card market, is also lower. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 3:19 PM Mellanox (MLNX -11.2%) is having an ugly day. The sale of 18K shares by director Dov Bharav (acquired via stock options) could be a factor, though some point to worries about competition from Intel - the chip giant bought QLogic's InfiniBand adapter card/switch business earlier this year, making it a direct rival. Pac Crest and Barclays are defending Mellanox. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, November 12, 2012, 6:37 PM Mellanox (MLNX) unveiled a big product refresh today. The most noteworthy release is arguably MetroX, an InfiniBand switch line that can support links spanning over10km. InfiniBand switches are typically used to connect hardware in close proximity; MetroX could open up applications where a company needs a high-performance link to span multiple sites. Also introduced: new high-end InfiniBand switches (could go into Oracle's hardware) and networking management software. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, October 26, 2012, 2:41 PM Storage adapter card/switch vendors Emulex (ELX +9.7%) and QLogic (QLGC +6.3%) have trekked higher after posting their calendar Q3 reports (I, II). Both companies had fallen sharply due to weak enterprise server demand. Emulex guided for FQ2 revenue of $120M-$124M and EPS of $0.19-$0.21, largely below a consensus of $129.1M and $0.21. QLogic guided for FQ3 revenue of $112M-$118M and EPS of $0.14-$0.19, below a consensus of $126.8M and $0.23. Rival Mellanox (MLNX +1.2%) is up slightly. (ELX transcript) (QLGC transcript) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 12:28 PM Mellanox (MLNX -6.4%) is having a rough day after announcing CEO Eyal Waldman and CFO Michael Gray have adopted Rule 10b5-1 trading plans. Waldman's plan will allow him to sell (through a general partnership) 169.1K shares starting in January, and Gray's plan will allow him to sell 55.5K shares. Mellanox was crushed last week after providing soft Q4 guidance, though shares are still up over 100% YTD. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]

FortSumter: Cramer is a bloviating moron. After yesterday's spy rise, he's now touting buy and hold as viable. -
Julius Ferraro: After loving it at 120 he said he didnt like it anymore at 100. So he's not all bad lol

FortSumter: Apparently their "competitive moat" has been has been bridged. I would think only a buy-out would matter at this point.
