- Wednesday, May 15, 5:05 PM Mellanox (MLNX) is acquiring Kotura, a developer of silicon photonics interconnect tech, for $82M in cash. The deal, which is expected to be accretive to 2014 EPS by $0.01-$0.03, is noteworthy in light of Intel's (INTC) efforts to both develop both InfiniBand solutions and 100G silicon photonics interconnects for its server CPU platforms, with the goal of creating more modular server architectures. This purchase seems aimed at trying to meet that long-term threat. 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, May 13, 7:31 AM Mellanox (MLNX) is cut the Hold at Barclays with price target lowered to $60. Among the concerns are weakness at H-P, IBM's potential sale of its server business to Lenovo (now in doubt), and a 2014 Intel upgrade which could pause PC purchases. Shares -1.8% premarket. 1 Comment [Tech]

- Friday, April 5, 9:51 AM The bloodletting in enterprise IT and telecom equipment names that followed F5's March quarter warning yesterday afternoon has spread, with some telecom component/chip names now among the companies getting hit hard. This morning's weak NFP report certainly isn't helping matters. JDSU -5%. CVLT -6.1%. EZCH -4.5%. INFA -3.9%. QLIK -3.9%. MLNX -3.6%. CAVM -8.5%. RKUS -5%. FTNT -3.9%. FNSR -6%. Comment! - Monday, March 25, 11:38 AM In adding Apple (AAPL +0.9%) to its Most Preferred list, UBS names dividend/buyback hikes, a low-end iPhone, and a calendar Q4 China Mobile deal as possible catalysts. Separately, the firm has replaced H-P (HPQ +0.3%) with Fusion-io (FIO -0.9%) on its Least Preferred list, citing concerns Fusion-io's forecast for 40% Q/Q growth in the June quarter may prove optimistic. Apple is replacing Mellanox (MLNX +0.2%) on the Most Preferred list - UBS doubts much positive news will be provided on Mellanox's Q1 call. 3 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, March 20, 4:44 PM Some enterprise IT names slump in response to Oracle's FQ3 miss, which included a surprising 2% Y/Y drop in new software license/cloud subscription revenue, and a 23% Y/Y drop in hardware product sales. InfiniBand hardware supplier Mellanox (MLNX) is the worst-hit, -7% AH. IBM -1%. HPQ -1%. EMC -1.2%. RHT -1.9%. VMW -1%. TIBX -1.2%. TDC -1%. Archrival SAP is unchanged for now. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 12, 4:17 PM A bullish note from Lazard led Mellanox (MLNX +13.8%) to gradually surge to new 2013 highs; shares have now fully recouped the losses they saw following Mellanox's Q4 warning. Following a meeting with management, Lazard thinks business is back on track. The firm has lifted estimates while maintaining a PT of $69. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 7, 10:28 AM An upgrade to Outperform from JMP is giving Mellanox (MLNX +4.2%) a boost; the firm has set a PT of $70. Mellanox has been mostly range-bound since Jan. 3, when it crashed thanks to its Q4 warning. Yesterday, Mellanox announced its InfiniBand adapter cards and switches are used in a high-end SQL Server data warehousing system developed by Microsoft, and offered by H-P and Dell. Comment! [On the Move] - Wednesday, February 20, 12:50 PM H-P (HPQ -0.7%) is using its reseller conference to refresh its IT hardware lineup, with an eye towards integrated offerings. New products include: 1) A blade server for PC virtualization that (relying on software from CTXS and VMW, and NVDA's Quadro GPUs) supports 4x as many virtual desktops as the prior-gen model. 2) A blade server/Ethernet swtich platform that (with the help of MLNX ASICs) that significantly increases available bandwidth. 3) A mid-range storage system that combines technology from 3PAR with integrated backup/recovery. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 15, 6:36 PM To address the needs of the supercomputer/HPC market, Intel (INTC) plans to integrate networking and storage controllers onto future Xeon CPUs; the chip giant foresees both performance and space/power benefits. Intel also wants to create a new interconnect fabric for HPC systems by tying together the work of multiple product groups - product lines purchased from Cray and QLogic could help, as might the Fulcrum Microsystems acquisition. Intel's plans could pose a risk to Mellanox (MLNX). Update: Commenter York Maksik notes LSI's storage controller card business could also be hurt by Intel's plans. PMC-Sierra's (PMCS) Adaptec unit also competes in this space. (also) 14 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 13, 1:42 PM Mellanox (MLNX +4%) is having a good day - as is often the case, The Fly on the Wall reports the gains are due to M&A speculation. With 23.8% of the float was shorted as of Jan. 31, a short-squeeze isn't hard to produce. This morning, Mellanox announced Ethernet adapter card/switch solutions for the OpenStack cloud infrastructure platform; the hardware is meant to improve networking performance for virtualization deployments, and increase storage throughput.
