- Tuesday, February 19, 6:23 PM Based on today's questioning by Supreme Court justices, Monsanto (MON) looks to be in a strong position to claim that an Indiana farmer violated its patent for a type of soybean. "There are certain things the law prohibits," Justice Breyer told the farmer's lawyer in the closely watched case. "What it prohibits here is making a copy of the patented invention. And that is what he did." 6 Comments [Commodities]
- Friday, February 15, 9:47 AM A dispute between an Indiana farmer and Monsanto (MON) over soybean seeds will be heard next week at the Supreme Court. At issue is how long MON can claim patent protection for its genetically engineered seeds, but it isn't just the agriculture world that's nervous about the outcome. Microsoft (MSFT) and Apple (AAPL) have filed briefs saying a ruling against MON would "eviscerate" their patent protection. 20 Comments [Commodities, Tech]
- Thursday, January 31, 5:53 PM Monsanto Company (MON) declares $0.375/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 1.48%. For shareholders of record Apr. 05. Payable Apr. 26. Ex-div date Apr. 03. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Wednesday, January 23, 6:12 PM Monsanto (MON) agreed to waive two years of royalties on its Roundup Ready soybean seeds for Brazilian farmers who agree to forgo claims in a patent dispute. The agreement would resolve claims by growers who claim the patent expired in 2010, ending their obligation to pay royalties on the seeds, and helps resolve uncertainty about MON’s ability to collect fees on its new Intacta soybean. Comment! [Commodities]
- Friday, January 18, 3:13 PM Dow Chemical's (DOW -0.3%) controversial new Enlist biotech corn will be delayed at least another year as the company awaits regulatory approval amid opposition from farmers, consumers and public health officials. Dow aims for Enlist eventually to replace Monsanto's (MON +0.6%) market-leading Roundup Ready system. 1 Comment [Commodities]
- Thursday, January 17, 10:58 AM Initiating coverage on the "North American Agricultural Sciences" sector, Credit Suisse declares itself a fan of some, with Agrium (AGU), Monsanto (MON), and Potash (POT) all rated Buys. MOS, CF, and IPI are rated Neutral, with Compass Minerals (CMP) started at Sell on worries over the implementation of cost-cutting. All of these companies are holdings of MOO, +4,5% YTD. Comment! [Commodities]
- Tuesday, January 8, 3:18 PM Monsanto's (MON +2.6%) improved profit forecast for the year, by $100M to $7.65B, reflects a gain of $200M-$300M despite deciding to omit profit from Roundup Ready soybeans in Brazil because of the legal dispute over patent expiration, CFO Pierre Courduroux said on today's conference call. MON may be more aggressive in returning cash to shareholders, CEO Hugh Grant added. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 8, 8:28 AM More on Monsanto's (MON) FQ1 results: Seeds and genomics sales rose 14% to $1.8B, with corn seed and traits net sales up 27% Y/Y to $1.1B, driven by strength in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. Raises FY13 EPS guidance to $4.30-$4.40 vs. prior $4.18-$4.32 and $4.40 consensus. Raises FY13 free cash flow guidance to $1.8B-$2B. Shares look headed to new 52-week highs, +4.7% premarket. 3 Comments [Earnings, Commodities, On the Move]

- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 5:07 PM Monsanto (MON) will resume collecting royalties for its Roundup Ready soybeans in Brazil while it appeals a court ruling there on intellectual property rights. Brazilian growers say the original patent expired in 2010, ending their obligation to pay MON a technology fee on the seeds; MON says Brazilian law extends the patent to 2014, when it expires in the U.S. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Monday, December 3, 2012, 12:18 PM Monsanto (MON) declares $0.375/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 1.64%. For shareholders of record Jan. 04. Payable Jan. 25. Ex-div date Jan. 02. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 5:38 PM EU food safety regulators say there is no need to reevaluate the safety of Monsanto's (MON) genetically engineered NK603 corn because a study linking the crop to cancer in rats contained serious defects. The EU's decision comes after the French government said last month it would no longer pursue an immediate ban on EU imports of the corn. 7 Comments [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 3:56 PM Monsanto (MON +0.9%) is upgraded to Buy from Hold at Topeka Capital, which remains confident in positive ag fundamentals. The firm believes caution about the diminishing effectiveness of certain biotech traits and perceived uncertainty regarding the impending expiration of MON's RR patent in 2014 are now more benign at least in the near-term. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 10:03 AM Monsanto (MON +2.7%) opens strong after the Justice Department ends its antitrust probe of the seed industry in general and MON's soybean genetic traits business in particular. MON had been the target of complaints saying it was trying to limit access to older, cheaper products to push a new, more expensive offering. 1 Comment [Commodities, On the Move]
