- Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 7:51 AM Rats fed with Monsanto's (MON +1.7%) GM corn in a French study, or exposed to its Roundup weedkiller, suffered mammary tumors, and severe liver and kidney damage. Around 50% of males and 70% of females died prematurely vs. 30% and 20% in the control group. However, the lead researcher has a record as a critic of the GM industry, so other experts may be wary of drawing quick conclusions. 9 Comments
- Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 7:19 AM Goldman Sachs adds Monsanto (MON) to its Conviction Buy List with renewed confidence that the company can deliver EPS growth of around 20% in the next few years. A price target of $110 from Goldman analysts reps 24% upside on shares. MON +1.1% premarket to $90.01. Comment! [On the Move, Commodities]
- Thursday, September 13, 2012, 11:20 AM Given the drought, scary-low ending grain stocks, and record farm incomes, how much longer will the companies selling stuff to farmers underperform the broader market? The Agribusiness ETF (MOO) has had a decent summer, but has fallen behind the S&P by 2000 basis points over the last year. Top holdings include: Monsanto, Potash, and Deere. 2 Comments [Commodities, U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, September 5, 2012, 5:04 AM Evidence is mounting that Monsanto's (MON) genetically modified corn is losing its effectiveness to bugs, the EPA says, with studies finding that rootworms on two Illinois farms had become resistant to insecticide that the corn produces. Corn accounted for $4.81B of Monsanto's sales last year, or 41% of the total. 7 Comments [Commodities, Top Stories]
- Tuesday, September 4, 2012, 4:41 PM The principal grains producers' association in Brazil's top soybean-growing state warns farmers not to plant a new variety of transgenic soy it says Monsanto (MON) is distributing. The soy hasn't been approved in China, where most of Brazil's exports of the oilseed are shipped; the group claims seeds could contaminate shipments of approved varieties, putting exports to China at risk of being refused. Comment! [Commodities]
- Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 9:43 AM Monsanto (MON -0.4%) signs a deal with Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (ALNY +3.6%) to use the biopharma's gene-silencing technology to improve its biopesticides. MON gains exclusive rights to use ALNY's platform technology and intellectual property; ALNY will receive $29M in upfront payments plus milestone payments and research funding. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 3:57 PM Monsanto (MON +1%) moves higher after announcing that a new testing program from its Integrated Farming System platform is set to launch next year. MON says the platform is designed to provide farmers with a valuable new approach to boost on-farm productivity while also supporting more sustainable global agriculture systems. Comment! [Commodities]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 12:27 PM A coalition opposed to California's Proposition 37 has collected $25M from corporate backers including Monsanto (MON), DuPont (DD), PepsiCo (PEP) and Coca-Cola (KO), more than any other initiative. The legislation, if approved, would make California the first state to require labels on genetically engineered crops or processed foods that contain genetically engineered fruits or vegetables, such as corn, soybeans, sugar beets and Hawaiian papayas. 12 Comments [Commodities]
- Monday, August 20, 2012, 2:18 PM UBS hikes its target price for Monsanto (MON -0.7%) to $88 from $80 but maintains its Neutral rating on valuation. The firm raises its EPS estimates to $4.40 from $4.25 for 2013 and to $4.95 from $4.55 for 2014 (maintains 2012 at $3.70), citing its product portfolio and pipeline. Also, MON promotes 29-year company veteran Brett Begemann to president. Comment! [Commodities]
- Wednesday, August 15, 2012, 10:46 AM As the corn crop withers, Monsanto (MON +1%) shares are blooming - up 24% YTD - but has the seed maker's stock grown too pricey? MON's move may be related to its testing of a drought-resistant corn strain that produces plants with deeper roots, but investors may be expecting too much; Piper Jaffray says the corn isn't designed to hold up to the extreme conditions the U.S. has seen this year. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 5:23 PM Stephen Mandel's Lone Pine Capital takes up new positions: Cooper Cos. (COO), Walt Disney (DIS), eBay (EBAY), Google (GOOG), HCA Holdings (HCA), Kohls (KSS), Liberty Global (LBTYA), Monsanto (MON), News Corp, (NWSA), Qualcomm (QCOM). Comment! [Tech, Commodities, Healthcare]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 10:37 AM Monsanto (MON -0.9%) reaffirms FY2012 EPS guidance at $3.65-$3.70 vs. analyst consensus of $3.71, and free cash flow of $1.7B-$1.8B. MON also sees net cash provided by operating activities at $2.7B-$2.9B, and net cash required by investing activities at $1B-$1.1B for FY2012. 1 Comment [Commodities]
- Friday, August 10, 2012, 3:52 PM After corn prices spiked to new highs following today's USDA report, prices ended lower as cuts to demand estimates helped offset the expected declines in corn yields. "The USDA is behind the market and [traders] expect another reduction in yield," a pro says. Food shares are mixed: ADM -2%, HRL +0.1%, HSH -1.8%, TSN +1.3%, MON -2.1%, POT +0.8%, CF -2.1%, AGU -0.1%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 12:59 PM Wal-Mart (WMT +1.1%) says it will sell a new crop of genetically modified sweet corn created by Monsanto (MON -0.1%) at its stores. The company says it sees no "scientifically validated" safety reasons to restrict the product. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 9:12 AM Monsanto (MON) declares $0.375/share quarterly dividend, 25% increase from prior dividend of $0.30. Forward yield 1.69%. For shareholders of record Oct 05. Payable Oct 26. Ex-div date Oct 03. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Friday, August 3, 2012, 7:43 PM Monsanto's (MON) $1B win on Wednesday against rival DuPont (DD) may be vulnerable , according to patent lawyers familiar with the proceedings. The size of the verdict alone - the fourth largest in history - puts it at risk. Two of the three awards that exceeded that amount were thrown out on appeal, and the other was cut by almost two-thirds. Add to the mix that no commercial sales were actually made by DD, and there's precedent, and possibly even a good chance, they could win on appeal. 2 Comments [Commodities]
