- Thursday, August 2, 2012, 8:39 AM Monsanto (MON) +1.7% premarket after last night's verdict of $1B in damages against DuPont (DD) in the patent infringement dispute over its Roundup Ready herbicide technology. DD vows to overturn the verdict on appeal, saying “several fundamental errors... deprived the jury of important facts and arguments.” MON notes the finding of willful infringement could lead to a higher damage award. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 7:07 PM Monsanto (MON) wins a $1B judgment against Dupont (DD) in its patent infringement suit over modified Roundup Ready soybean seeds. 1 Comment [Commodities]
- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 10:08 AM Monsanto's (MON) claim that DuPont (DD) owes $1B for infringing a patent on Roundup Ready crops and a counterclaim the patent was obtained through deception will go to a jury after closing arguments today. “It would be a bigger loss for DuPont because of the implication that their GAT trait wasn’t successful," says an analyst who thinks DD’s argument won't succeed. Comment! [Commodities]
- Wednesday, July 18, 2012, 10:41 AM The corn crop is gone, says Dennis Gartman, and despite already high prices, corn and corn-related shares should be bought on any weakness. Stay away from fertilizer stocks, however tempting as they may be as a proxy to corn. Buying them on the premise that laying more fertilizer will save the crop is just a "silly idea," Gartman quips. Fertilizer may be needed next year, but right now, anybody who's laid some down already wishes they hadn't because the crop is completely destroyed. (video) 36 Comments [Commodities]
- Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 9:36 AM More on Monsanto (MON +2.1%) FQ3: Net profit +35% to $937M as the mild winter prompts farmers to sow more crops earlier. Sales of corn seeds and traits +35% to $1.52B, soybean seed and traits +15% to $698M. Affirms recently raised FY guidance of $3.65-$3.70 and expects ongoing earnings to grow up to 25%. Comment! [Earnings]
- Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 8:03 AM Monsanto (MON): FQ3 EPS of $1.63 beats by $0.05. Revenue of $4.22B (+17% Y/Y) beats by $220M. Shares +1% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]

- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 10:14 AM Monsanto (MON +1.3%) is suing Pioneer Hi-Bred, a unit of DuPont (DD +1.3%), over allegations of patent infringement on its "seed chipper" technology, asking the court to force Pioneer to stop using the technology and selling any products developed through it, STLToday.com reports, citing court documents. Comment! [Commodities]
- Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 4:51 PM Monsanto (MON) is defending its right in Brazil to apply royalties to its Roundup Ready soybeans in a case that could cost it $7B in reimbursement payouts if it loses. Yesterday, Brazil's second highest court ruled a class-action case brought by soybean producers in the grain state of Rio Grande do Sul would have national application once a decision was reached. Comment! [Commodities]
- Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 9:17 AM Monsanto (MON) declares a quarterly dividend and announces a share repurchase program for up to $1B of common stock. Positive results YTD have created the opportunity to reinvest in the business and to return value to shareowners, the company says. MON +1.5% premarket. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 10:15 AM New genetically altered corn developed by Monsanto (MON +1.2%) aimed at helping farmers deal with drought offers more hype than help over the long term, the Union for Concerned Scientists says. MON's corn "does not appear to be superior to several recent classically bred varieties of drought-tolerant corn" and does not outperform non-engineered alternatives, the group says. 17 Comments [Commodities]
- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 2:45 PM Monsanto (MON +2.8%) rides above today's sagging market after it raised fiscal guidance for FQ3 and FY2012, citing sales boosted by a strong seed selling season in the Americas, and said strong growth would continue in 2013. MON earnings are due June 27; it has reported six straight positive earnings surprises. Shares are upgraded to Buy at Canaccord with a new price target of $89, up from $81. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 8:10 AM Monsanto (MON) raises its FY12 EPS guidance to $3.73-3.78/share from $3.49-3.54 and vs. consensus of $3.56. The company sees Q3 EPS at $1.57-1.62 vs. consensus of $1.29. CEO Hugh Grant says the strong performance is about true demand from higher planted acres, and not, as possibly thought, just due to an early planting season. Shares +3% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 7:33 AM Monsanto (MON) agrees to purchase privately-held Precision Planting for $210M in cash and $40M tied to a performance-based payment. The company says the purchase will help boost its technology to improve farming yields using fewer resources. (PR) Comment! [M&A]
- Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 8:50 AM One reason for the continued bullishness on corn is a 4.3M ton reduction in world ending stocks thanks to higher-than-expected feed use demand out of China. Higher incomes = higher demand for meat. (earlier USDA report) 1 Comment [Commodities, Global & FX]
