- Thursday, June 13, 3:38 PM Europeans have long been skeptical of genetically modified crops, but urine tests from city dwellers in 18 European countries found traces of the potentially dangerous herbicide glyphosate, better known as Roundup (MON +1.4%), in 44% of samples. Even with few GMO crops grown in Europe, Roundup is used - "overused," critics say - for weed control in agriculture and in public spaces. 4 Comments [Commodities, Consumer]

The U.S. Agriculture Department says unapproved genetically engineered wheat appears limited to the one field in Oregon where it was discovered last month - apparently supporting Monsanto's (MON) claim of an isolated incident - but its investigation is not yet complete. Meanwhile, Idaho farmers file a class action lawsuit against MON, following a similar lawsuit filed in Kansas.
2 Comments [Commodities] - Tuesday, June 11, 5:38 PM Monsanto (MON) says it is planning a spring launch for its second-generation of genetically modified soybean seeds in its key South American market. MON plans to sell just 200K bags of its new Roundup Ready 2 soybean seeds in the region for the upcoming 2012-13 season, but expects 60%-65% of South America's soybean fields to be planted with the seeds within five years. - Tuesday, June 11, 2:28 PM DuPont (DD -0.7%) opens a seed plant in Ukraine designed to help farmers increase harvests with more productive seeds. Ukraine, a major maize exporter, plans to harvest a record 27M-28M metric tons of the commodity this year but still needs higher-quality seeds to increase yields. Monsanto (MON) said last month it planned to launch a non-GM corn seed plant in Ukraine in 2015. Comment! [Commodities]
- Monday, June 10, 5:55 PM A U.S. appeals court dismisses a lawsuit filed by U.S. organic farmers aimed at protecting them against legal action by Monsanto (MON) if traces of the company's patented biotech genes are found in crops. The court says the organic growers must rely on assurances on MON's website that it would not sue them so long as the mix is very slight. 2 Comments [Commodities, Consumer]
- Monday, June 10, 8:59 AM Monsanto (MON) +3.3% premarket after Argentina's agriculture minister indicates China had approved Intacta soybeans for import. Morgan Stanley says, if correct, it "checks the single most important box in our Monsanto investment thesis." Piper Jaffray calls Intacta MON's "single most important earnings driver" for the next five years. Also, Macquarie upgrades MON to Outperform, seeing an attractive entry point for investors. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Saturday, June 8, 10:10 AM Several plant scientists are questioning conclusions Monsanto (MON) drew from its investigation of an escaped GMO wheat variety, and say there is still a risk that rogue grain is in the seed supply. “Sure they tested it, but that doesn’t mean it’s all clean,” says one. “It just means it’s not so widespread that it could be detected easily." Comment! [Commodities, Consumer]
- Thursday, June 6, 4:59 PM Monsanto Company (MON) declares $0.375/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 1.52 %. For shareholders of record July 5. Payable July 26.Ex-div date July 3 (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Thursday, June 6, 4:35 PM Monsanto (MON) has approved a $2B, new three-year share repurchase program. The new program will commence at the completion of Monsanto's existing $1 billion share repurchase program, which was effective beginning in July 2012. Shares +0.4% AH. Comment! [On the Move, Commodities]
- Wednesday, June 5, 12:32 PM Monsanto (MON -3.3%) calls the genetically modified wheat found in Oregon an isolated occurrence, likely the result of an accident or deliberate mixing of seeds. MON says tests of 600 samples of each of two wheat varieties planted by an Oregon farmer show no presence of the experimental Roundup Ready wheat, and tests of 30K wheat samples in Oregon and Washington also show no contamination. 10 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 4, 3:57 PM A Kansas farmer files suit against Monsanto (MON) over the recent discovery of genetically modified wheat in Oregon, claiming MON's gross negligence hurt U.S. growers by driving down wheat prices and causing some international markets to suspend certain imports. The lawsuit is believed to be the first stemming from the discovery, but more surely are in the works. 23 Comments [Commodities]
- Monday, June 3, 8:23 AM Not needing another public relations battle, Monsanto (MON) says it will not apply for approval of new genetically modified seeds in Europe due to low demand from farmers and public opposition. Last week's discovery of an unapproved strain of GMO wheat in Oregon has sparked international concern. Europe currently accounts for ~12% of MON's $13.5B in global sales. 3 Comments [Commodities, Consumer]
- Friday, May 31, 3:13 PM Data shows Monsanto (MON -3.2%) resumed field trials of experimental wheat engineered to survive Roundup herbicide, after it said May 29 it had ended its program to develop Roundup Ready wheat nearly a decade before the USDA announced this week that the GMO crop was discovered growing on an Oregon farm and has since caused international concern. 1 Comment [Commodities, Consumer]
- Friday, May 31, 9:58 AM South Korea suspends imports of U.S. wheat following this week's discovery of an unapproved strain of genetically modified wheat that prompted Japan to cancel a wheat order and the European Union to step up tests. Many fear the GMO wheat has been mixed in with conventional wheat for some time, but there are no valid commercial tests to verify whether wheat contains the Roundup Ready gene. MON -1.2%. Comment! [Commodities, Consumer]
- Thursday, May 30, 6:10 PM The European Commission asks EU member states to check imports of U.S. soft white wheat, after a genetically modified strain made by Monsanto (MON), possibly with the Roundup Ready gene, was found in Oregon and caused Japanese authorities to cancel a tender offer to buy U.S. wheat. Soft white wheat accounts for ~80% of U.S. wheat imported annually by the EU, with most of it going to Spain. 26 Comments [Commodities, Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, May 30, 6:18 AM Japan has canceled an offer to buy U.S. grain after authorities found an unauthorized strain of genetically engineered wheat on a farm in Oregon, with South Korea, China and the Philippines monitoring the situation. The wheat was developed by Monsanto (MON), which could face a hefty compensation bill if the boycott spreads - Bayer CropScience had to pay $750M to crop growers in 2011 over contaminated rice. Wheat futures are -0.6%. 11 Comments [Commodities]
