- Saturday, May 18, 8:25 AM Refining Canada’s oil sands produces petroleum coke, called "the dirtiest residue from the dirtiest oil on earth." It's piling up along the Detroit River, NYT reports, thanks to a Marathon Petroleum refinery that began refining Canadian oil sands in November. Detroit’s pile will not be the only one. Canada’s efforts to sell more products from oil sands to the U.S., which include transporting it through the proposed Keystone pipeline, are pulling more coking south to U.S. refineries, creating more waste product. 20 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, May 16, 9:59 AM T. Boone Pickens added nearly 125K shares in Apache (APA) and more than 500K shares in Goodrich Petroleum (GDP) to his energy fund during Q1. He bought new stakes in MPC, PSX and HK, and sold positions in SWC, RRC and RIG. The fund’s top holding Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD); Pickens added ~43K shares. 1 Comment [Energy]
- Friday, May 10, 12:30 PM At least 230 barrels of diesel fuel have leaked from a Marathon Petroleum (MPC -2.3%) pipeline in an industrial area of Indianapolis. MPC says the pipeline wasn't flowing at the time of the leak because of a lull in market demand, but it was pressurized with diesel in it. The leak is believed to have occurred slowly over time, not the result of a sudden break or external forces. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, May 6, 6:30 PM All but three refiners are net-cash today, with average free-cash yield of ~11% on mid-cycle earnings whose managements have substantial firepower to defend against share-price weakness, Credit Suisse notes, finding the most value in Marathon Petroleum (MPC) and Tesoro (TSO); it reinstates Valero (VLO) at Neutral. Also, Western Refining (WNR) is upgraded, and Alon USA (ALJ) is cut to Underperform. 1 Comment [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, May 3, 4:43 PM Damage at a Mississippi River barge dock is preventing Marathon Petroleum (MPC) from loading crude there, which could depress Canadian oil prices if repairs are lengthy. The dock's unloading arm was damaged when a barge it was filling with crude was struck by other vessels that became unmoored; one of the barges collided with a Kirby-owned (KEX) vessel, causing a spill into the river. 3 Comments [Energy]
- Tuesday, April 30, 2:52 PM Marathon Petroleum's (MPC -5.4%) Q1 earnings jumped 22%, in line with expectations, and revenues beat forecasts, as its new Galveston Bay refinery bought from BP in February added to sales volumes. But the market is focusing on a weaker-than-expected refining margin and higher-than-expected cash operating costs, sending shares sharply lower. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 30, 8:51 AM More on Marathon Petroleum's (MPC) Q1 results: Refining and marketing segment's operating profit climbed 17% to $1.11B. Operating margin edged up to 5% from 4.7%. Refinery throughput rose to 1.67M bbl/day from 1.32M bbl/day in the year-ago quarter. Sales volume rose to 1.88M bbl/day from 1.53M. Shares +0.7% premarket. 1 Comment [Energy, Earnings]
- Tuesday, April 30, 7:26 AM Marathon Petroleum (MPC): Q1 EPS of $2.17 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $23.3B beats by $3.5B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Wednesday, April 17, 5:50 PM Deutsche Bank lowers its stock target prices on several refiners, expecting weak margins to weigh on earnings in Q2 and in 2013 as producing gasoline gets less profitable. The new target for Buy-rated Holly Frontier (HFC) is $58, down from $68. Hold-rated refiners with reduced targets: ALJ, CLMT, CVI, DK, MPC, PBF, PSX, TSO, VLO, WNR. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, April 17, 3:29 PM Enterprise Products Partners (EPD -0.4%) says it is considering options for its JV 210K bbl/day Centennial refined products pipeline, such as a reversal or moving different products, because of low volumes shipped from the Gulf Coast to Illinois. The pipeline remains in service but it's not moving much now, EPD says without specifying volume levels. 50-50 partner MPC -2.6%. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Friday, April 12, 12:26 PM Oppenheimer points to four reasons that may allow refining stocks to recover from their recent selloff: continued wide differentials between WTI and Brent pricing; continued cheap natural gas; growing diesel and gasoline imports; declining environmental spending. But it's another difficult day for sector stocks the firm likes: HFC -1.2%, MPC -3.5%, PSX -2.9%, TSO -1.6%, VLO -2.8%. 7 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 11, 3:33 PM Phillips 66 (PSX -2.9%) shares slump as it reports an emission at its Rodeo refinery in California related to an unplanned unit shutdown. It's part of a broad slump in refiners today, picking up pessimism in the sector which has led to sharp recent losses: VLO -4.8% (despite a plug by Jim Cramer), HFC -4.4%, TSO -3.3%, MPC -3.2%, WNR -2.9%, CVI -2.4%, ALJ -2.3%, NTI -2.2%. 4 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Friday, April 5, 12:49 PM Refiners are mixed today - VLO +1%, TSO +1%, PSX -0.2% - as the sector licks its wounds after this week's selloff, and Dimitra DeFotis of Barron's suggests its time to take profits as the market recognizes the stocks have come too far too fast. In particular, Tesoro and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) are up 106% and 99% Y/Y, respectively. 3 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, April 4, 2:35 PM Cowen's Sam Margolin notes gasoline margins have fallen 35% since March 8, which may keep refiner stocks volatile near-term, but he likes the medium-term picture as prices stabilize. Top drivers of refining stock performance over the past two years - accelerated return of cash, monetization of secondary assets, feedstock cost advantages vs. competing global refineries - remain in place for the coming year. 5 Comments [Energy]
