Mercury Computer Systems (MRCY) takes a hit in post-session trading after revising FQ1 guidance lower. The company now says it expects revenue to be in the range of $48M - $50M - including revenues from Micronetics, which was acquired by Mercury on August 8, 2012 - below Street estimates of $58M. Shares -7% AH.

Mercury Computer Systems (MRCY) agrees to acquire Micronetics (NOIZ), a maker of radio and microwave frequency subsystems and components, for $14.80/share, in a deal valued at ~$75.4M. NOIZ +94.3% premarket.

Defense sales, including ACS and Mercury Federal Systems, increased 46% Y/Y, while Defense bookings rose 27% over the same period. Sterne Agee initiates coverage of the defense sector with a negative outlook, due to the falling U.S. military budgets. However, Stern notes that the U.S. will still provide a market worth around $500B a year, "supporting near-term cash flows, dividend payouts and share buybacks." Sterne rates GD, MRCY and KEYW at buy; LMT, RTN and FLIR at neutral; and AVAV at underperform.

Mercury Computer (MRCY) picks up KOR Electronics and subsidiary Paragon Dynamics for $70M in a deal expected to close before the end of the year. The firm says the acquisition will be funded with cash, and is expected to be immediately accretive to earnings.

Digital imaging systems maker Mercury Computer (MRCY) is +14.6% after reporting a better-than-expected Q2 profit of 22 cents/share. Analysts predicted 19 cents/share. Mercury's bump up was largely due to increased revenue from its defense customers.

Reflecting changing military budget priorities, the defense industry desperately needs cybersecurity capabilities. Other potential buyout targets include Essex Corp.
