Rival Vertex (VRTX -0.4%) also awaits FDA approval of its new hepatitis C drug later this month, but one analyst believes Merck should capture 20-30% of the global market hepatitis C market. Comment! - Thursday, May 12, 2011, 4:49 PM News that treating AIDS patients with antiretroviral drugs makes them much less infectious helps efforts to slow the disease’s spread as well as the companies making those drugs. - Thursday, April 28, 2011, 4:44 PM FDA panel unanimously endorses Vertex's (VRTX) hepatitis C drug, telaprevir, noting a cure rate jump to 80% from 40% with current therapies. - Thursday, March 24, 2011, 2:25 PM Amgen (AMGN +1%) may introduce its first dividend at an April 21 investor meeting, Bloomberg says, boosting a stock whose value has been chopped by a third since 2006. Unlike other biotechs, Amgen can afford to return money to shareholders because it generates a lot of cash compared with capital expenditures. But the projected 2.3% yield would rank well behind drugmakers PFE, MRK and JNJ. 1 Comment
- Tuesday, March 22, 2011, 7:36 AM Abandoning their planned animal health JV is a blow to Merck (MRK) and Sanofi (SNY) as they try to scale up in a consolidating industry. It's also a blow to smaller firms eager to buy assets Sanofi/Merck would have been forced to shed. The winner here is Pfizer Animal Health (PFE) which will retain its top spot in the market. 1 Comment
