MRK vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
On November 3, 2009, Merck & Co., Inc. (“Old Merck”) and Schering-Plough Corporation (“Schering-Plough”) completed their previously-announced merger (the “Merger”). In the Merger, Schering-Plough acquired all of the shares of Old Merck, which became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Schering-Plough... More

- Thursday, May 16, 12:55 PM Oncothyreon (ONTY -20.7%) tanks today after presenting data as ASCO that showed Phase III trials of its investigational MUC1 antigen-specific cancer immunotherapy L-BLP25 didn't meet its primary objective. The trial was conducted by Merck Serono, a division of Merck (MRK -0.7%), under a license agreement with ONTY. 3 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, May 6, 1:36 PM Merck (MRK -1.3%) gets no love today from the FDA's approval of Liptruxet late Friday, as the stock is likely dragged down with the rest of the big pharma names on the back of a CNBC report that criticizes their earnings so far. The article points to the fact that pharmaceutical companies have seen a 4.7% contraction in earnings, and a 3.2% drop in revenue this quarter. Why? Morningstar's Damien Cover says there are two primary reasons: FX impact, especially from the yen, and intensified generic competition from patent losses. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 10, 12:28 PM Jim Cramer likes what he sees in Merck (MRK +2.1%) right now, saying the stock is lagging its peers, trading at just about 12x earnings versus a richer 14x the rest of the sector. Patent cliff fears for this stock are pretty well mitigated, Cramer says. The company has no fewer than five solid drugs in development, and while none may be a home run, the pipeline should bolster growth over the next few years. He thinks the stock should be trading somewhere closer $60 right now. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Friday, March 15, 3:08 PM Oncothyreon (ONTY +0.9%) moves up today on a better than expected Q4 report yesterday, largely shrugging off Cantor Fitzgerald's slashing of its price target to $4.00 from $11.00. The cut relates to ONTY's loss of Stimuvax. Cantor says that despite partner Merck's (MRK) assertion that treatment effects were observed in sub-populations, its financial model assumes that commercialization does not occur and no value is included in its valuation. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move, Earnings]
- Tuesday, March 12, 8:30 AM Merck (MRK +3.3%) says that the Data Safety Monitoring Board will allow the company to continue with its large-scale trial of its blockbuster Vytorin cholesterol drug, indicating that no safety issues have come up. Some analysts had hoped that the trial would already have demonstrated Vytorin's effectiveness and so could be halted. Alas, the study will continue until September 2014. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, March 4, 11:49 AM Bank of America Merrill Lynch makes a couple valuation calls in healthcare this morning, upping Merck (MRK +1.2%) to Buy on optimism over its osteoporosis drug, and moving to Neutral on Bristol-Myers (BMY -0.9%) due to its limited total-return potential. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, February 4, 11:43 AM Merck (MRK -1.9%) moves lower on a couple of downgrades today one from Morgan Stanley to underweight and another from Leerink Swann to Market Perform. Morgan, who seems to be having the biggest adverse affect on the shares today, saying there's 75% chance that the large "Improve-It" study of its cholesterol drug Vytorin will fail. If that's the case, the stock could decline by double-digits on a percentage basis. Leerink cites uncertainty around odanacatib, as well as increasing competition for Januvia and Isentress as its motive for cutting the shares. 2 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Friday, February 1, 1:10 PM Merck (MRK -3.1%) slips today after its Q4 fails to impress amid a decline in net sales. The company blames the earnings drop on patent expiry for its asthma drug Singulair, adding that the loss of its patent in the U.S. and Europe will be 2013's biggest revenue challenge. The company also announced a potential year-long delay in seeking regulatory approval for its new osteoporosis drug odanacatib, citing the need for additional safety and efficacy data from an ongoing clinical trial. - Friday, January 25, 9:26 AM Threshold Pharmaceuticals (THLD) +6.3% premarket after earning a $30M milestone payment from drug partner Merck (MRK), which started a late-stage study of THLD's pancreatic cancer drug. TH-302 is an investigational hypoxia-targeted drug designed to be activated under severe tumor hypoxic conditions, a hallmark of many cancers. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 10:48 AM Cardiome Pharma (CRME +41%) leaps higher out of an earlier trading halt after the company says it's reached a deal with Merck (MRK +0.6%) to settle its debt obligations stemming from it's collaboration on vernakalant - a treatment for atrial fibrillation - which it signed in April 2009. Under the terms of the settlement, CRME will pay MRK $20M to settle its outstanding debt of $50M, and MRK will terminate a $100M credit facility it had made available to CRME. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, July 12, 2012, 11:27 AM Leerink Swann calls the early success of Merck's (MRK +4.2%) odnacatib osteoporosis drug a "positive upside surprise," and forecasts peak sales of $975M in 2020, and a total global sales potential of $3B+. Leerink Swann also maintains its Outperform rating on Merck's stock, while Citigroup ups its rating to "buy" from "neutral." Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 6:19 PM Merck (MRK) +3% AH after reporting favorable Phase III trial results for its odnacatib osteoporosis drug. The company says it will "begin taking steps to close the trial," and plans to submit the drug for approval by U.S., E.U., and Japanese regulators in 1H 2013. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 28, 2012, 10:53 AM Pharmaceutical stocks are down following the Supreme Court healthcare opinion, although not dramatically: AZN -0.4%, GSK -1.6%, SNY -0.8%, PFE -0.8%, ABT -0.8%, MRK -0.7%, LLY -1%, WPI -0.9%, NVS -0.7%, JNJ -0.4%. iShares Dow Jones US Healthcare ETF (IYH) -0.95%, the Health Care SPDR (XLV) is -1.3%. 2 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Friday, June 22, 2012, 10:03 AM Illumina (ILMN +4.1%) and (to a lesser extent) Merck (MRK +1.1%) trade higher after being added to Credit Suisse's U.S. Focus List. Meanwhile, Procter & Gamble (PG +0.7%) isn't showing any ill effects from being removed from the list. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move, Consumer]
- Friday, May 25, 2012, 4:28 PM Shares of Amylin Pharmaceuticals (AMLN +8.4%) finished markedly higher on reports that the company, which is on the sales block, was already receiving bids from Sanofi (SAN) and Merck (MRK) in excess of $25 per share. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move, M&A]
- Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 11:52 AM Amylin (AMLN) +6% to $27.19 on reports that it's attracted multiple suitors. Leerink Swann analysts reckon Sanofi (SNY) and Merck (MRK) will emerge as the strongest bidders, and predict a sale price in the mid-$30 a share, although it could go higher if there's a bidding war for the biotech firm. 1 Comment [On the Move, M&A, Healthcare]
