- Thursday, February 14, 11:14 PM Marvell (MRVL) finished AH trading up 1.3% after David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital disclosed it raised its stake in the chipmaker to 51.8M shares in Q4 from 32.7M at the end of Q3. This means Greenlight owned 9.2% of Marvell at year's end. At the same time, the firm slashed its stake in one of Marvell's top customers, Seagate (STX), by nearly half to 8.4M shares. That left Greenlight owning 2.2% of the hard drive giant. Marvell's FQ4 report arrives on Feb. 21. (13F) Comment! [Tech]
- Sunday, February 10, 6:15 PM Einhorn's Apple (AAPL) proposal is pretty much the stub stock idea made famous by Joel Greenblatt, writes The Brooklyn Investor, showing how issuing $50B in preferred would theoretically add $32/share in value. In cases where an underleveraged firm won't lever up, Greenblatt reminded an investor can and should create their own leverage using LEAPs. This spreadsheet (from May) on Greenlight's site details Einhorn's preferred idea for not just Apple, but DELL, GM, MRVL, and MSFT. 34 Comments [Tech]
- Saturday, February 9, 4:48 PM The market for micro servers - cheap, densely-packed, low-power servers most often used for Web/cloud services - will grow from just 88K units in 2012 to 1.2M in 2016 (10% of server shipments), predicts IHS. ARM-based (ARMH) chips could power much of this gear - NVDA, MRVL, AMCC, AMD, and others are busy developing ARM server CPUs. Intel (INTC) has responded with its S1200 Atom CPUs, but opinions about their competitiveness are mixed. Moreover, even if Atom CPUs keep ARM at bay, they could cannibalize sales of costlier Xeon CPUs. (Facebook) 16 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 5, 1:20 PM Hard drive industry sales will fall 12% in 2013 to $32.7B, IHS predicts, as both slumping PC demand and growing solid-state drive (SSD) adoption take a toll. The low valuations given to Seagate (STX) and Western Digital (WDC), as well as controller suppliers Marvell (MRVL) and LSI, makes it clear the Street sees an industry in long-term decline - all four are working to grow their SSD exposure (I, II), but competition is intense. IHS thinks WDC could eat into STX's 50% share of the high-margin enterprise HDD market thanks to its helium drives. 18 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, February 1, 1:34 PM Telecom chipmakers Cavium (CAVM +7.5%) and PMC-Sierra (PMCS +13.7%) soar after delivering Q4 beats (I, II), and contribute to a decent rally in chip stocks (SOXX +1.9%). Cavium guided on its Q4 call for Q1 revenue of $68.5M-$70.5M and EPS of $0.17-$0.19 vs. a consensus of $69.1M and $0.17. PMC guided on its call for Q1 revenue of $123M-$132M, largely above a $124.7M consensus. The numbers come amidst growing optimism (I, II) about 2013 telecom capex. Peers Broadcom (BRCM +2%), Marvell (MRVL +3.1%), and LSI (LSI +4.7%) are all doing well. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, January 28, 10:41 PM Seagate (STX) guided on its FQ2 call for FQ3 revenue of $3.25B-$3.45B, below a consensus of $3.58B. Gross margin is expected to be at the low end of a range of 27%-32% after coming in at 27.8% in FQ2. "We're trying to give a conservative outlook, because our customers [PC OEMs] are giving us conservative input," says CFO Pat O'Malley. A $40M investment has been made in server flash memory module maker and Fusion-io (FIO) rival Virident. STX -4.8% AH. WDC -2.6%. MRVL -1.4%. FIO -3.8%. - Wednesday, January 23, 12:22 PM China Mobile (CHL) says it sold over 60M TD-SCDMA 3G phones in 2012, and hopes to double that figure in 2013. Moreover, the world's biggest mobile carrier hopes 80% of those sales will involve smartphones, which are more likely to use ARPU-lifting data subscriptions. TD-SCDMA baseband chip vendors Spreadtrum (SPRD), Marvell (MRVL), and MediaTek must be pleased to hear those remarks. So might Qualcomm (QCOM), which recently announced baseband chips for CHL's network. (Apple talks) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 23, 12:16 PM A rough Q4 (-4.9%) brings Greenlight Capital's 2012 gain down to 7.9%. Among existing positions, Einhorn continues to like a big winner - GM - saying the company has substantial excess capital even after its big purchase from the government. He also adds to a big loser - Marvel (MRVL) - calling the $1B verdict against it "a novel interpretation of the law by a local judge, combined with a hometown runaway jury ... MRVL is on the cusp of a large product transition which, to put it mildly, is not in the valuation." 1 Comment [Financials, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, January 8, 4:24 PM Seagate (STX) +1.9% AH after stating it expects to report FQ2 (Dec. quarter) revenue of at least $3.6B, above prior guidance of $3.5B and a consensus of $3.53B. Gross margin is expected to come in at 27%, down from FQ1's 28.4%. Seagate adds it bought back a whopping 30M shares in the quarter; it repurchased 20.5M shares in FQ1, and 139M in the whole of calendar 2012. WDC +2.4%. LSI +1.2%. MRVL +0.8%. Seagate's recent rally seems to be tempering the market's enthusiasm. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, December 28, 2012, 5:31 PM Smartphones now make up 40% of Wi-Fi hotspot sessions, and tablets another 17%, according to trade group WBA. All that activity offloads traffic from strained mobile networks, and is one reason Light Reading sees carrier Wi-Fi adoption continuing to ramp in 2013. It also sees bigger deployments, such as Cisco's recent Indonesian deal, and deployment of the high-speed 802.11ac standard thanks to chips from Broadcom, Marvell, and others. Ruckus Wireless (RKUS), up sharply since its Nov. IPO, is close to a pure-play on carrier Wi-Fi equipment. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, December 28, 2012, 8:19 AM Marvell Technology (MRVL) gets a tepid endorsement after a tough run as Wunderlich initiates coverage with a Hold and $9 price target. The analysts say the stock is cheap, but won't make it a Buy until they see the appointment of a new CFO, among other things. Shares +1.3% premarket. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, December 27, 2012, 9:52 AM Marvell (MRVL -3.5%) is adding to the 11% decline it saw yesterday after Pittsburgh jury awarded Carnegie Mellon $1.17B in damages in a patent infringement suit against the chipmaker. Likely playing a role is a downgrade to Market Perform from JMP: the firm is worried about the impact of the verdict on Marvell's balance sheet, notes other lawsuits also exist, and (unsurprisingly) says checks indicate PC demand is soft. After-hours top gainers, as of 5:30 p.m.: MACK +5%. CLDX +4%. FOLD +4%. IDIX +3%. NBIX +2%.
After-hours top losers: AMBA -2%. DGAZ -2%. MRVL -2%. DNDN -2%. PRSS -1%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Wednesday, December 26, 2012, 2:55 PM Marvell (MRVL -6.6%) dives after being ordered by a jury to pay $1.17B in damages in a patent suit, the WSJ reports. The chipmaker has been sued by Carnegie Mellon over a patent allegedly infringed by its hard drive controllers. Marvell (current market cap of $4.15B), which has been claiming prior art, will undoubtedly appeal, and probably see that damages figure reduced by a judge. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 5:56 PM China Unicom (CHU) added 3.25M users to its 3G network in November, increasing its total to over 73M. That's roughly even with the 3.2M added in October, and likely a sign of further 3G share gains. The fact CHU is the only Chinese carrier to use the widely-adopted W-CDMA 3G standard gives it an edge in phone selection. CHU has said it expects to sell 140M 3G phones next year - those sales benefit Qualcomm, which collects royalties on them (unlike with 2G-only phones). Bigger rival China Mobile (CHL) expects to sell 100M+ TD-SCDMA 3G phones in 2013. Comment! [Tech]
