- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 12:10 PM Marvell (MRVL -1.7%) is trading lower after UBS slashed its estimates through 2014, citing storage and wireless softness. Marvell's shares have been hit hard as weak PC demand takes a toll on hard drive controller sales, and the company bleeds share in China's TD-SCDMA baseband chip market. FQ3 results arrive on Thursday. (FQ3 warning/CFO departure) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 5:56 PM Microsoft's Surface RT tablet uses a Marvell (MRVL) Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip, according to iFixit's teardown. That, notes Susquehanna, is Marvell's highest-profile combo chip win to date - the chipmaker has struggled to compete in this space against market leader Broadcom. Atmel (ATML) and Cypress (CY) touchscreen controllers were also found inside Surface RT, which has received mixed reviews. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, October 29, 2012, 1:17 PM Though adoption of ARM-based (ARMH) server CPUs will be held back over the near-term by software compatibility issues, many companies are already interested in using them in big data projects, where software is less of a hurdle and the power consumption and density benefits of ARM servers are given a premium. Among these companies is Dell (DELL), which is working on big data systems relying on startup Calxeda's ARM CPUs. AMCC and MRVL are two other chipmakers targeting this market. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 9:14 AM Western Digital (WDC) -8.7% after issuing poor FQ2 guidance to go with its FQ1 report. CLSA is downgrading shares all the way to Underperform from Outperform, citing weak hard drive demand and a lack of catalysts. During its earnings call, WDC said it expected calendar Q4 industry hard drive shipments of 140M, in-line with a bleak Citi forecast and below a Seagate forecast of 150M-155M. Even after factoring in estimate cuts, shares are likely trading around 4x 2013 EPS exc. cash. STX -5%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 5:33 PM Western Digital (WDC) -3.6% AH after guiding on its FQ1 call (webcast) for FQ2 revenue of $3.55B-$3.7B and EPS of $1.65-$1.85, below a consensus of $4.13B and $2.43. Seagate (STX) -4.5%. Expectations for hard drive shipments have been deteriorating as PC sales dive, but it looks as it they need to fall further still. Controller chip supplier Marvell (MRVL) warned last week. Seagate reports on Oct. 30. 4 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

[On the Move] - Friday, October 19, 2012, 10:06 AM AMD (AMD -6.3%) and Marvell (MRVL -11.9%) get downgraded to Market Perform by FBR's Craig Berger after providing more bad news (I, II) yesterday afternoon. Berger is worried about AMD's cash burn, lack of gross margin guidance, and upcoming price cuts, and thinks Marvell's loss of CFO Clyde Hosein is an indictment of its "culture and founder-CEO control" - he considers rival LSI a better buy. Also downgraded is Nvidia (NVDA -2.1%), for which Berger cites general PC worries. (AMD transcript) 9 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]

Premarket gainers: SVNT +12%. RVBD +11%. CALL +7%. SNDK +7%.
Losers: CBLI -20%. ATHN -11%. CMG -11%. MRVL -9%. PH -9%. ETFC -6%. Comment! [On the Move] - Thursday, October 18, 2012, 5:20 PM Marvell (MRVL) -10% AH after: 1) Warning it expects FQ3 (Oct. quarter) revenue of $765M-$785M, below a consensus of $813.4M. The chipmaker blames weak hard drive controller sales caused by soft PC demand. 2) Announcing CFO Clyde Hosein has resigned to "pursue other opportunities." Corporate controller Brad Feller will serve as interim CFO until a replacement is found. Rival LSI could trade lower in sympathy. Hard drive forecasts have been quickly going downhill. Comment! - Friday, October 5, 2012, 6:31 PM Hungry to create new markets for its Atom CPU line now that tablets have wrecked netbook demand, Intel (INTC) is developing Atom reference designs for cheap, Internet-accessible storage appliances aimed at consumers and small businesses. Such appliances have been around for a while, largely relying on processors from rival chipmakers such as Marvell. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 6:42 PM China Mobile (CHL) hopes to sell 100M TD-SCDMA 3G smartphones in 2013, up from an expected 60M in 2012. TD-SCDMA baseband chip leaders Spreadtrum (SPRD) and Marvell (MRVL) must be glad to hear that. So must Qualcomm, which will reportedly offer a 3G/4G reference design to OEMs in Q1. But price competition is likely to be fierce: CHL expects unsubsidized TD-SCDMA dual-core smartphone prices to hit CNY1,000 ($158) by the end of 2012, and quad-core prices to follow suit in 2013. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, September 28, 2012, 2:04 PM Qualcomm (QCOM) will reportedly begin offering a reference design in Q1 for phones supporting China Mobile's 3G TD-SCDMA network, and potentially its budding 4G TD-LTE network. The reference design includes Qualcomm's MSM8930 Snapdragon processor (a cheaper alternative to the powerful MSM8960), and should give Qualcomm a chance to take share in a TD-SCDMA baseband chip market dominated by Spreadtrum (SPRD), Marvell (MRVL), and MediaTek. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 11:57 AM Marvell (MRVL -1.9%) slides after receiving downgrades from Canaccord and Caris. A declining hard drive market and share losses in the 3G TD-SCDMA baseband chip market will lead to falling estimates, says Canaccord's Bobby Burleson, who now rates Marvell a Neutral. He holds off on rating the company a Sell due to its new dividend. 2 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]

Mark Hartner: Verdict just out. Marvell just lost the lawsuit to CMU to the tune of $1.2 Billion. That works out to about $2.25 per share. Ouch. -
