Taiwan's MediaTek, a top-5 player in the baseband chip market, says it expects a 10% Q/Q revenue decline in Q1, due to weak demand for chips used in 2G "feature phones," many of which go to Chinese OEMs. MRVL and RFMD have already warned of similar weakness (I, II). Qualcomm (QCOM), which reports tomorrow and primarily sells 3G and 4G baseband chips, might be taking share.

Nomura (Neutral) responds to Marvell's (MRVL -1.8%) FQ4 warning by issuing a downbeat note. Though believing FQ4 (ends this month) will represent a sales bottom, Nomura expects a slow recovery on account of weak PC demand, and share losses to Spreadtrum (SPRD) in the market for TD-SCDMA baseband chips (used in phones on China Mobile's 3G network). Others are more bullish.

The ASP for 10-gigabit Ethernet switches fell 53% in 2011, according to research firm Dell'Oro, and that's contributed to a surge in demand. Cisco (CSCO), estimated to have 76% of the 10-gig market, is hoping this demand offsets the weak sales and price competition it's seeing for less powerful switches. Chipmakers BRCM and MRVL are also hoping the 10-gig market gives them a lift. (previously)

Marvell (MRVL +2.5%) moves higher despite cutting its Q4 sales guidance due to Thailand flooding and weak year-end demand among mobile and wireless customers. Analysts at Benchmark and Susquehanna are sticking with the stock, seeing "clear evidence that HDD supply is recovering quickly" based on Western Digital's results, and believing the bad news was known already.

An Infonetics survey turns up growing carrier interest in deploying cutting-edge 40G and (especially) 100G optical transport equipment; respondents cited lower bandwidth costs and superior signal performance as reasons for shifting away from older 10G equipment. Ciena (CIEN) stands to benefit from growing 40G/100G adoption, and so might recent Marvell (MRVL) acquisition Xelerated.

Spreadtrum (SPRD +5.8%), which was hammered last week following RF Micro's warning, is surging thanks to a bullish note from Nomura's Rick Sherlund. Sherlund is pleased with Spreadtrum's introduction of a 4G TD-LTE baseband chip, which will allow it to participate in China Mobile's (CHL) TD-LTE trials. He also notes the Chinese chipmaker has a lower cost structure than rivals ST-Ericsson and Marvell (MRVL).

Google (GOOG) hopes CES product releases will provide some needed momentum for its TV efforts. Sony (SNE), Samsung, LG, and Vizio all plan to introduce sets supporting Google TV; some of this hardware might feature Marvell (MRVL) application processors. Google TV, which recently got a major software upgrade, has struggled with poor initial sales, and the unwillingness of content providers to play ball.

Marvell (MRVL) announces its ARM-based (ARMH) ARMADA processors have been designed into the latest Google TV (GOOG) hardware, displacing Intel (INTC) chips in the process. Intel stated in October it was shutting down a division that developed Atom chips for the set-top box market. Eric Schmidt has said he expects Google TV to be in the majority of TV sets on sale by summer, though that may prove a tall order.

Sales of high-end data center networking gear could see a major bump next year, as the demands of virtualization and cloud server environments lead companies to invest more heavily in 10-gig and 40-gig equipment. CSCO would be one clear beneficiary of such spending growth; chipmakers BRCM, MRVL, MLNX, and CAVM might also stand to gain.

Marvell (MRVL +1.6%) is upped to Buy from Hold with a raised $22 price target at Craig Hallum, which believes the troubles in the hard-drive industry caused by Thailand flooding will cause a smaller impact than the Street has expected. Also, MRVL “is gaining traction in WCMDA smartphones, which lessens the impact of potential continued headwinds from RIMM."
