Intel (INTC) rolls out its anticipated Romley server CPU platform, which it officially calls the Xeon E5-2600. Analysts believe Romley's built-in networking features could drive demand for 10G Ethernet switches, thereby benefiting both switch vendors such as CSCO and JNPR, and chipmakers such as BRCM and MRVL. SemiAccurate is quite impressed with Romley after running some tests.

Spreadtrum (SPRD -3.1%), which tumbled yesterday due to the soft Q1 guidance (revenue of $158M-$163M vs. $172.1M consensus) accompanying its Q4 beat, falls some more after JPMorgan and Chardan Capital downgrade shares to Neutral. Spreadtrum attributed its guidance to a seasonal drop in orders for its 3G TD-SCDMA chips (used by phones on CHL's network), but there might also be fears of strong competition from MRVL.

In a talk with GigaOm, Cisco's (CSCO) John Chambers vehemently denies that his company is looking to sell its set-top box business, echoing the remarks of a co-worker. Chambers also touts the uptake seen by Cisco's UCS servers, and suggests Cisco will continue to invest in its own switching chips, in spite of growing competition from solutions relying on chips from BRCM, MRVL, and others.

More on Marvell Technologies (MRVL): 4Q beats lowered estimates despite a 64% drop in profit on weakness in the market for the chip maker's hard-drive components. Revenue dropped 18% Y/Y, extending a streak of lower earnings for the company over the past year, when broad economic uncertainty forced many electronics makers to cut back production. Shares +1.5% AH.

Benchmark takes a dim view of the semiconductor industry, writing that “an upward inflection in a semiconductor mini cycle is already priced into the sector” and cuts its rating on Broadcom (BRCM -1.7%) and Marvell (MRVL -1.7%), arguing their shares have priced in that recovery.

Several wireless chipmakers are getting a lift from Qualcomm's (QCOM +3.1%) strong FQ1 report, and the healthy chip shipment data that accompanied it. Qualcomm's earnings call remarks about strong Chinese 3G uptake could also be helping, given existing fears about Chinese demand. SWKS +6.4%. TQNT +2.4%. MRVL +1.8%. SQNS +3.2%. SPRD +2.2%.

Spreadtrum (SPRD) jumps 5.8% premarket after announcing a TD-SCDMA 3G version of Samsung's Galaxy Note smartphone/tablet hybrid, due to be sold by China Mobile, will feature a Spreadtrum baseband processor. Nomura recently suggested Spreadtrum is taking share from Marvell (MRVL) in the growing TD-SCDMA baseband market.

Taiwan's MediaTek, a top-5 player in the baseband chip market, says it expects a 10% Q/Q revenue decline in Q1, due to weak demand for chips used in 2G "feature phones," many of which go to Chinese OEMs. MRVL and RFMD have already warned of similar weakness (I, II). Qualcomm (QCOM), which reports tomorrow and primarily sells 3G and 4G baseband chips, might be taking share.

Nomura (Neutral) responds to Marvell's (MRVL -1.8%) FQ4 warning by issuing a downbeat note. Though believing FQ4 (ends this month) will represent a sales bottom, Nomura expects a slow recovery on account of weak PC demand, and share losses to Spreadtrum (SPRD) in the market for TD-SCDMA baseband chips (used in phones on China Mobile's 3G network). Others are more bullish.

The ASP for 10-gigabit Ethernet switches fell 53% in 2011, according to research firm Dell'Oro, and that's contributed to a surge in demand. Cisco (CSCO), estimated to have 76% of the 10-gig market, is hoping this demand offsets the weak sales and price competition it's seeing for less powerful switches. Chipmakers BRCM and MRVL are also hoping the 10-gig market gives them a lift. (previously)

Marvell (MRVL +2.5%) moves higher despite cutting its Q4 sales guidance due to Thailand flooding and weak year-end demand among mobile and wireless customers. Analysts at Benchmark and Susquehanna are sticking with the stock, seeing "clear evidence that HDD supply is recovering quickly" based on Western Digital's results, and believing the bad news was known already.
