- Thursday, April 18, 1:44 PM Morgan Stanley's (MS -4.5%) cost-cutting efforts brought its expense ratio down to 80% from 97% a year ago, but it's still well above Goldman's 67%, writes Antony Currie. Focusing on wealth management is a good idea, he says, as the unit's 17% margins means good thing for the bottom line. On the CC (transcript), Mike Mayo noted competitors margins were in the 20s and asked Gorman if he would commit to that level. Gorman demurred, saying he's gotten burned by such promises in the past. 1 Comment [Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 10:59 AM Financial advisory fees on both sequential and a Y/Y basis at Morgan Stanley (MS -3%) were the worst among the major players, notes analyst Mike Mayo on the bank's CC. Responding, CFO Ruth Porat says institutional rankings have remained consistent. Given the stock's apparent discount to tangible value, Mayo questions why the bank hasn't been more aggressive with buybacks. CEO Gorman responds the focus was on passing the Fed's stress tests and closing the Smith Barney transaction. For now, capital will continue to build. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]

After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: MUX +4%. BAC +4%. DFS +3%. RRD +2%. MS +2%.
After-hours top losers: GLDD -31%. ULTA -11%. MWA -9%. KKD -6%. ARO -6%. 6 Comments [On the Move] - Friday, January 18, 2:25 PM "We see a clear path to meeting and then exceeding our cost of equity," says Morgan Stanley (MS +7.3%) CEO Gorman on the conference call (transcript). The first order of business will be getting regulatory approval to acquire the rest of Smith Barney - wealth management had a pre-tax margin of 17% in Q4, ahead of a 15% goal. In the areas of risk-asset and expense reduction, the bank is also well ahead of its goals. (earnings) Comment! [Financials, On the Move]

2 Comments [On the Move] - Tuesday, September 4, 2012, 7:11 AM Morgan Stanley (MS) is upgraded to Overweight with price target of $20 at JPMorgan, which also downgrades Goldman Sachs (GS) to Underweight. Details are slim at the moment, but valuation seems to be behind the paired calls. Morgan +2.4%, Goldman -0.2% premarket. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
- Monday, August 13, 2012, 7:42 AM Google (GOOG) is upgraded to overweight at Morgan Stanley (MS), the note saying the stock trades at a 25% discount to the online ad sector. Carl Quintanilla provides a little more color, saying it's the same analyst who cut Facebook numbers ahead of the IPO. Of Google, he says "social competiton is less than feared." Shares +1.4% premarket. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, July 20, 2012, 11:58 AM Morgan Stanley (MS -2.2%) is in advanced talks with Qatar's sovereign wealth fund about an investment in the bank's commodities unit and a deal could be imminent, CNBC reports. Such a stake could give the fund a toehold in the global business of trading paper and physical stocks of commodities such as crude oil, natural gas and metals, while providing an influx of capital for MS. 1 Comment [Financials, On the Move]
- Friday, July 20, 2012, 8:49 AM CLSA's Mike Mayo upgrades Morgan Stanley (MS) by two notches to Outperform from Underpeform with a price target of $16 (from $15), following Q2 earnings which fell short of Street estimates and sparked a 5% drop in the stock. Nevertheless, MS -1.1% premarket. Comment! [Financials, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Thursday, July 19, 2012, 9:03 AM Morgan Stanley (MS) plans to cut another 700 jobs by year's end to try and "rightsize" the bank, according to CFO Ruth Porat. The bank has already cut more than 3K positions this year. Shares -4.2% premarket (earnings miss earlier) 2 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, July 19, 2012, 8:20 AM More on Morgan Stanley (MS): The company posted an additional $2.9B in collateral as of June 30 because of the Moody's ratings downgrade. The total amount that could have been called was $6.3B. Shares -4.7% premarket. 3 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, July 19, 2012, 7:42 AM More on Morgan Stanley (MS): Ex-DVA earnings were $0.16 vs. $0.29 estimated. Ex-DVA revenue off 26.7% Y/Y. Advisory revenues -51% Y/Y, FICC revenue -59%, Equity revenue -39% - did clients back away because of the downgrade? Compensation expenses -36% Y/Y. Shares -3.2% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, July 19, 2012, 7:40 AM Morgan Stanley (MS): Q2 EPS of $0.28 misses by $0.15. Revenue of $6.95B (-24% Y/Y) misses by $750M. (PR) 4 Comments [Earnings, Financials, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 18, 2012, 2:42 PM A nice in move higher in the broad averages leaves the big banks behind. Hit particularly hard is Bank of America (BAC -4.4%), which delivered a nice headline number, but the particulars of its underlying business (and future liabilities) leave less to be excited about. Reporting tomorrow is Morgan Stanley (MS -2.7%) 5 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 28, 2012, 6:25 AM It's setting up to be a bad morning for financials. Barclays (BCS) -8.6% premarket as pressure grows for Diamond to quit, and JPMorgan (JPM) -5.2% on reports its trading loss could hit $9B. Perhaps in sympathy, other financial names are also dropping, outpacing the pullback by S&P futures: BAC -1.5%, MS -1.15%, C -1%, WFC -1%. 11 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 26, 2012, 6:51 AM Morgan Stanley (MS) is removed from Goldman's Conviction Buy list and passes right by a Buy rating, moving all the way down to Neutral. High capital markets exposure and implications from last week's Moody's downgrade are among the reasons. Shares -2% premarket. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
