- Sunday, June 9, 5:50 AM Tech companies may be telling the truth by saying they have not provided the National Security Agency with full access to their servers, but they have reportedly taken steps to make data-sharing with the government easier. For example, Facebook (FB) has built a separate and secure portal to which it can deposit data requested by the NSA. Other companies that negotiated with the government include Google (GOOG) Microsoft (MSFT), AOL (AOL) and Apple (AAPL); Twitter has limited its co-operation as much as possible. 18 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, June 7, 5:18 PM Microsoft (MSFT +2%) roundup: 1) Windows 8.1's (Blue) UI changes will include improved portrait mode support. Whereas the first round of Win. 8 tablets have aspect ratios optimized for landscape viewing (better for video/gaming), the iPad has kept a portrait-friendly aspect ratio (better for reading). 2) Microsoft claims it has added 30K Azure customers since April, thanks to a major pickup in growth following the official launch of cloud infrastructure services (at first, Azure was purely a cloud app development platform). The company also promises to add 25 new data centers this year to expand Azure's reach. 3) Microsoft is facing a backlash from gamers over the Xbox One's verification and Internet connection requirements. (more on 8.1) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 7, 11:54 AM Oppenheimer becomes the latest Microsoft (MSFT +1.6%) bull to raise its PT as shares continue their spring rally: the firm has lifted its target to $39 from $34, and has also raised estimates. Meanwhile, activist investor ValueAct, fresh off taking a $2B stake, has been given FTC clearance for an undisclosed transaction between the firm and Microsoft. Nomura (Buy) thinks ValueAct, which prefers to do its activist work behind the scenes, is "likely approaching Microsoft’s largest shareholders and may be gaining their support for a Board seat." 3 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 7, 3:36 AM Revelations over government electronic surveillance have widened to include several of the country's largest technology companies under a program called PRISM. A National Security Agency document reportedly shows that it has "direct access" to the servers of Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo (YHOO), Google (GOOG), Facebook (FB), Paltalk, AOL (AOL), Skype, YouTube and Apple (AAPL). While the NSA document says PRISM has the consent of these firms, those contacted denied any knowledge of the program. The question is whether the disclosures will cause a drop-off in user activity. 26 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Thursday, June 6, 7:19 PM Microsoft (MSFT) won't charge a fee for Xbox One used game sales to "retailers, publishers, or consumers," the company states in a blog post. GameStop (GME) investors are relieved, shares +5% AH. Other details: 1) With games/data stored in the cloud, users will be able to access owned games on friends' consoles by logging in. 2) Users are required to be online once every 24 hours on their home console, and once an hour on a friend's console, to verify usage rights. 3) Games can be shared with up to 10 family members, who can play them on any console (though only one can play from a shared library at a given time). (previous) 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 6, 1:15 PM Microsoft (MSFT) is talking with U.K. satellite TV provider Sky (BSYBY.PK) to sell the Xbox One, possibly at a subsidized price, in tandem with TV subscriptions, gaming site MCV reports. MCV vaguely adds the One "could work as a set-top-box or companion device" - there have been multiple reports of a low-cost Xbox set-top being in the works. Though Microsoft is no stranger to Xbox deals with TV providers, a subsidized hardware partnership would be something new. (more on Xbox One) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, June 6, 2:48 AM Working in partnership with the FBI and authorities in over 80 countries, Microsoft's (MSFT) Digital Crimes Unit has launched a successful attack on one of the world's biggest cyber-crime rings. Microsoft forced the closure of at least 1,000 out of an estimated 1,400 malicious networks known as Citadel Botnets, which are believed to have stolen over $500M from accounts at financial companies such as American Express (AXP), PayPal (eBay), HSBC (HBC), JPMorgan (JPM), Royal Bank of Canada (RY) and Wells Fargo (WFC). 6 Comments [Top Stories, Financials, Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 5, 1:05 PM The White House officially unveils 5 executive actions and 7 legislative proposals aimed at patent trolls. In addition to previously-reported items (I, II), the White House plans to review ITC procedures for setting import bans, and recommends giving businesses "better legal protection" for using products targeted by suits. Though many tech companies applaud the move, Microsoft (MSFT) is worried it "targets software innovations more broadly." Quartz isn't impressed, arguing (among other things) the action doesn't touch existing patents, and that the USPTO remains understaffed. Potentially affected companies: ACTG, WILN, VRNG, VHC, RPXC. 16 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 5, 9:42 AM Deutsche's Nandan Amladi is a busy man this morning. In addition to downgrading VMware to Hold, he's cutting Microsoft (MSFT -1.1%), Intuit (INTU -1%), and RealPage (RP -1.3%) to Hold, and upgrading Informatica (INFA +1.4%) to Buy. Regarding Microsoft, Amladi thinks "the risk/reward is neutral" at a valuation of 8x calendar 2014E EPS (exc. cash). Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 5, 9:36 AM VMware (VMW -0.9%) gets cut to Hold by Deutsche's Nandan Amladi, who's worried about competition, billings growth, and execution. VMware's vSphere virtualization platform "continues to face pricing pressures from [Microsoft's] Hyper-V," and the rise of OpenStack is "driving up adoption" of Citrix's (CTXS) Xen virtualization software and the Linux-based KVM. Lastly, checks "indicate a fair amount of interest" in Microsoft's (MSFT) System Center management tools, which compete with parts of VMware's vCloud Suite. IDC estimates VMware's virtualization share fell to 56.8% in 2012, and Microsoft's rose to 27.5%. (cash flow guidance) (Craig-Hallum) 6 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 4, 2:49 AM Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer is reportedly planning to reorganize the company as he looks to foster better co-operation between product teams. Under one possible plan, Microsoft would put more focus on devices and services, and cut the number of divisions from eight to four. The groupings would be enterprise business, hardware, applications and services, and operating-systems. The speculation follows news that CIO Tony Scott has left the company. 6 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Monday, June 3, 2:56 PM More on Microsoft: 1) CIO Tony Scott is leaving to "focus on personal projects." His departure coincides with that of CFO Peter Klein, and comes 7 months after that of Windows division chief Steven Sinofsky. 2) Microsoft states Windows 8.1 will come with several new enterprise-friendly features, such as improved folder syncing and the ability to selectively wipe data. Win. 8's enterprise adoption has been low thus far, generally due to wariness over its huge UI changes. 3) Microsoft is acquiring InCycle Software's InRelease unit; InRelease creates application lifecycle management tools for .NET programming environments. 4) Acer announces the Iconia W3, the first Win. 8 tablet with an 8" display; it launches in June for $379. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, June 3, 1:39 PM Microsoft (MSFT +0.7%) kicks off its TechEd conference by showing off updates to Windows Server 2012 and its Systems Center 2012 management software, as well as the next version of its SQL Server database. The first two products will launch this year; the third might not arrive until 2014. As with its Azure cloud platform, Microsoft is touting the ability of its new offerings to support hybrid cloud deployments. SQL Server is also adding support for in-memory databases (previous) to take on SAP's Hana. Meanwhile, Azure has been updated to support per-minute billing (Amazon charges by the hour), and Microsoft boasts in a memo it's adding 1K+ Azure customers per day. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, June 3, 7:41 AM A "significant restructuring" may be afoot at Microsoft (MSFT) sources tell AllThingsD, as changes designed to simplify the company's organizational structure and "configure the company around devices and services" are in the works. Expanded roles for several executives including the presidents of the Servers and Tools, Skype Communications, and Interactive Entertainment divisions may be in the cards, although the details of the shuffle could "change substantively" going forward. Nomura cites shareholder pressure as a factor in the potential shakeup. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, June 3, 6:16 AM Microsoft (MSFT) has reportedly slashed the cost of its Windows and Office RT software for tablets and small laptops by up to two thirds as the company tries to build RT's miniscule market share. It's one example of how the major players in the PC industry hope to overcome the slump in the global market, another one being better power consumption. Vendors are set to show off their wares at the Computex trade show in Taiwan, which starts tomorrow. 4 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, May 31, 2:52 PM Microsoft (MSFT +0.5%) appears bent on unloading Surface inventory: the software giant is now offering a free Touch or Type Cover (they normally go for $120/$130) with a Surface RT purchase, and will be selling RT and Pro models for a respective $100 and $399 to attendees at next week's TechEd conference (the tablets normally start at $499 and $899). The discounts could be due to weak demand, a pending hardware refresh (reportedly due at the June 26-28 BUILD conference), or both. 23 Comments [Tech]
