- Thursday, April 18, 7:49 AM It's set to be a heavyweight late afternoon for the tech sector, with Google (GOOG), IBM (IBM) and Microsoft (MSFT) due to release quarterly results. Google's Q1 EPS is expected to have risen to $10.69 from $10.08 while revenue is seen surging 72.5% to $14.04B. IBM's Q1 EPS is estimated to have increased to $3.05 from $2.78 as revenue edged up 0.1% to $24.69B. Microsoft's FQ3 EPS is seen growing to $0.68 from $0.60 and its revenue 18.1% to $20.56B. Comment! - Wednesday, April 17, 5:35 PM Notable earnings after Thursday’s close: ACTG, ALGN, AMD, BGS, CBST, CE, CMG, COF, CPHD, ETFC, GOOG, IBM, ISRG, LSCC, MSFT, RMBS, VMI, WIT Comment! [Earnings]
- Wednesday, April 17, 11:54 AM H-P (HPQ -2.1%), Seagate (STX -2.6%), and Western Digital (WDC -2.8%) underperform after UBS' Maynard Um argues Intel's (INTC -1.3%) Q1 report backs up his thesis that "PC pricing needs to come down ... to entice upgrades." Um thinks this will lead to margin pressure for OEMs, and an unfavorable mix shift for hard drive vendors. He also notes H-P/Dell might not benefit from Intel's server CPU strength, since it's fueled by cloud buyers who often rely on white-label gear. Also: Paul Otellini stated on Intel's Q1 call he expects Window 8 (MSFT) touch devices (7" tablets?) using Intel's upcoming Bay Trail Atom CPU to eventually sport ~$200 price points. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 17, 5:56 AM Microsoft (MSFT) and Foxconn Technology (FXCOF.OB) unit Hon Hai Precision Industry have signed a global agreement that protects the latter's customers from patent claims prompted by their use of Google's (GOOG) Android and Chrome software. The deal adds to those that Microsoft, which is locked in an IP battle with Google unit Motorola, has signed with Samsung and LG. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 16, 7:04 PM Microsoft (MSFT) roundup: 1) ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley reports Microsoft is thinking of bringing back the Start button with Windows Blue, and of also allowing PCs to boot in desktop mode. The report follows major criticism of Win. 8's UI changes, and ugly Q1 PC data partly blamed on the OS. 2) In starting coverage at Overweight, Morgan Stanley asserts Microsoft "can still grow revenues with PCs declining 5% a year over the next five years." Also, an MS CIO survey found 20% of respondents using Windows Azure, compared with 13% using Amazon Web Services (AMZN). (earlier: I, II) 8 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 16, 2:12 PM There's no need for Microsoft (MSFT) to make its own phone, says Windows Phone VP Terry Myerson, shooting down speculation that had come up after multiple reports last fall stated Microsoft views a home-grown as a backup plan if WP8 launches prove disappointing. Myerson states a Microsoft phone would only be necessary if "Nokia (NOK) or HTC or other primary partners were not providing the consumer experience we think was possible on our platform," something he doesn't think is the case. 15 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 16, 12:05 PM While Microsoft (MSFT) takes its time in bringing the Kinect to Windows hardware, startup Leap Motion has struck a deal with H-P (HPQ) to embed and bundle Leap's advanced 3D motion controller - it can independently detect 10 fingers, and is said to be accurate up to 1/100 of a millimeter - with future devices. The devices will include access to Leap's Airspace app store, which should have strong developer support when it launches in May. Leap has already reached a deal with Best Buy to sell a USB motion controller for $80. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 16, 10:48 AM The cloud infrastructure price wars seem to have no end in sight: Microsoft (MSFT) responds to Amazon's (AMZN) neverending AWS price cuts - in last week's shareholder letter, Jeff Bezos bragged of cutting prices 27 times over the last 7 years - by promising its Azure service will match AWS cut for cut. Rackspace (RAX - previous) can't be too happy about that. The promise comes as Microsoft overhauls Azure to give clients a way to easily migrate Windows Server/Linux workloads to its public cloud with the help of virtualization software. (last fall: I, II) (Google) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 15, 7:01 PM Facebook (FB) is talking with Apple (AAPL) and Microsoft (MSFT) about bringing Home to iOS and Windows Phone, says Facebook exec Adam Mosseri, while adding nothing has been finalized. Unlike Google with Android, Apple and Microsoft have been reluctant to let third parties heavily modify the UIs for their mobile OS'. Mosseri seems well-aware of this, suggesting Home as it exists on Android might not arrive on iOS. "We could also just bring some of the design values to the iOS app ... Or we could build just the lock screen." (earlier) 5 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 15, 10:06 AM Ready for a Surface watch? Asian supply-chain contacts tell the WSJ Microsoft (MSFT) is also "working on designs for a touch-enabled watch device," albeit while cautioning it isn't clear if the company will commercialize a product. Google and Samsung have already reportedly joined Apple in launching smart watch projects. The watch industry's size and margins could have much to do with the apparent surge in R&D efforts from tech giants. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 12, 5:17 PM "Windows 8’s usability is proving an obstacle to adoption for consumers, with a learning curve that appears to be retarding growth across the industry," writes CLSA's Ed Maguire in his "downgrade" of Microsoft (MSFT) to Outperform. But he also notes 35%-40% of businesses are still on Windows XP, which Microsoft will stop supporting in a year, and that their upgrade activity could boost Windows sales (probably 7 more than 8). Meanwhile, Merrill (Neutral) estimates consumer PC weakness presents $5B in revenue risk and $0.30 in EPS risk for Mister Softee. 16 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 12, 11:48 AM Another downgrade (of sorts) for Microsoft (MSFT -0.4%): CLSA's Ed Maguire is lowering his rating for the software giant to Outperform from Buy, citing (what else?) weak PC demand. Goldman and Nomura downgraded Microsoft yesterday (I, II). Comment! [Tech]
