- Tuesday, April 16, 2:12 PM There's no need for Microsoft (MSFT) to make its own phone, says Windows Phone VP Terry Myerson, shooting down speculation that had come up after multiple reports last fall stated Microsoft views a home-grown as a backup plan if WP8 launches prove disappointing. Myerson states a Microsoft phone would only be necessary if "Nokia (NOK) or HTC or other primary partners were not providing the consumer experience we think was possible on our platform," something he doesn't think is the case. 15 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 16, 12:05 PM While Microsoft (MSFT) takes its time in bringing the Kinect to Windows hardware, startup Leap Motion has struck a deal with H-P (HPQ) to embed and bundle Leap's advanced 3D motion controller - it can independently detect 10 fingers, and is said to be accurate up to 1/100 of a millimeter - with future devices. The devices will include access to Leap's Airspace app store, which should have strong developer support when it launches in May. Leap has already reached a deal with Best Buy to sell a USB motion controller for $80. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 16, 10:48 AM The cloud infrastructure price wars seem to have no end in sight: Microsoft (MSFT) responds to Amazon's (AMZN) neverending AWS price cuts - in last week's shareholder letter, Jeff Bezos bragged of cutting prices 27 times over the last 7 years - by promising its Azure service will match AWS cut for cut. Rackspace (RAX - previous) can't be too happy about that. The promise comes as Microsoft overhauls Azure to give clients a way to easily migrate Windows Server/Linux workloads to its public cloud with the help of virtualization software. (last fall: I, II) (Google) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 15, 7:01 PM Facebook (FB) is talking with Apple (AAPL) and Microsoft (MSFT) about bringing Home to iOS and Windows Phone, says Facebook exec Adam Mosseri, while adding nothing has been finalized. Unlike Google with Android, Apple and Microsoft have been reluctant to let third parties heavily modify the UIs for their mobile OS'. Mosseri seems well-aware of this, suggesting Home as it exists on Android might not arrive on iOS. "We could also just bring some of the design values to the iOS app ... Or we could build just the lock screen." (earlier) 5 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 15, 10:06 AM Ready for a Surface watch? Asian supply-chain contacts tell the WSJ Microsoft (MSFT) is also "working on designs for a touch-enabled watch device," albeit while cautioning it isn't clear if the company will commercialize a product. Google and Samsung have already reportedly joined Apple in launching smart watch projects. The watch industry's size and margins could have much to do with the apparent surge in R&D efforts from tech giants. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 12, 5:17 PM "Windows 8’s usability is proving an obstacle to adoption for consumers, with a learning curve that appears to be retarding growth across the industry," writes CLSA's Ed Maguire in his "downgrade" of Microsoft (MSFT) to Outperform. But he also notes 35%-40% of businesses are still on Windows XP, which Microsoft will stop supporting in a year, and that their upgrade activity could boost Windows sales (probably 7 more than 8). Meanwhile, Merrill (Neutral) estimates consumer PC weakness presents $5B in revenue risk and $0.30 in EPS risk for Mister Softee. 16 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 12, 11:48 AM Another downgrade (of sorts) for Microsoft (MSFT -0.4%): CLSA's Ed Maguire is lowering his rating for the software giant to Outperform from Buy, citing (what else?) weak PC demand. Goldman and Nomura downgraded Microsoft yesterday (I, II). Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, April 11, 4:02 PM No mercy has been shown to Microsoft (MSFT -4.3%) today in the wake of IDC's figures (blamed in part on Win. 8) and Goldman's downgrade. Goldman now sees the PC/tablet sales ratio falling to 59/41 in 2014, and thinks Microsoft could respond with price cuts or SG&A spending cuts. Nomura's Rick Sherlund wonders if a breakup or privatization is possible for Microsoft. He notes March was better than Jan. or Feb. for PC sales, but is still downbeat. "It really takes your breath away, just how bad the quarter was." Separately, Argus has downgraded Intel (INTC -2%) to Hold. 26 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 11, 7:54 AM Goldman Sachs cuts Microsoft (MSFT -3.4% to $29.25) to "sell" from "neutral" and says there is an 11% downside to the software giant's $27 12-month price target. Goldman cites falling PC sales and not enough traction in tablets and smartphones as a reason for the downgrade, which comes a day after IDC said that global PC sales slumped 13.9% in Q1. 12 Comments [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 11, 1:16 AM Microsoft (MSFT) is working on a new line of Surface tablets that includes a 7" model due later this year, the WSJ reports. Given the popularity of ~7" tablets and the fact an upcoming Windows 8 refresh (i.e. Blue) will support them, the news isn't too surprising. The paper doesn't disclose whether the tablets will run Windows RT, Windows 8 Pro, or both - RT sales have been especially bad. The report comes shortly after IDC estimated PC shipments fell 14% in Q1, and a month after it raised its 2013 tablet shipment forecast to 190.9M. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 10, 4:52 PM PC-exposed names trade lower AH in response to IDC's bleak Q1 data. HPQ -1.8% AH. MSFT -1%. INTC -1.3%. Will the numbers give Michael Dell and Silver Lake more ammo to justify their $13.65/share LBO offer? Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 10, 4:43 PM Global PC shipments fell 13.9% Y/Y in Q1 to 76.9M units, per IDC. That surpasses Q4's 6.4% drop and Q3's 8.6% decline, and is steep even in light of IDC's recent commentary. IDC: "It seems clear that the Windows 8 (MSFT) launch not only didn’t provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market." H-P (HPQ) was the market's leader, but its share fell 200 bps Y/Y to 15.7%. #2 Lenovo (LNVGY.PK) saw its share rise 210 bps to 15.3%, and #3 Dell's rose 40 bps to 11.8%. Apple's (AAPL) U.S. share rose 60 bps to 10%, though U.S. Mac shipments fell 7.5% to 1.4M. 33 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 10, 2:23 PM A roadmap for Microsoft's (MSFT +2.2%) "Gemini" Office updates indicates iOS and Android apps won't arrive until fall 2014, ZDNet reports. While Microsoft takes its time in supporting rival platforms, Google (GOOG) has made the popular Quickoffice free on iOS/Android to Google Apps business customers. Separately, The Verge reports the next Xbox will be able to "take over a TV and set-top box" - Microsoft's pay-TV partnerships will allow for more functionality than Google TV - and that the next Kinect will be able to "detect multiple people simultaneously." (Xbox set-top) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 10, 12:07 PM A bullish note from Citi's Walter Pritchard is helping Microsoft (MSFT +1.9%) add to yesterday's big gains, and offsetting a downgrade to Hold from BGC. Though cutting his March quarter revenue forecast by $300M to reflect soft PC demand, Pritchard continues to expect the Server & Tools unit to perform well, aided by Microsoft's recent product refresh and "premium SKUs." Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 9, 5:27 PM Microsoft (MSFT +3.6%) roundup: 1) Windows Phone 8 will be updated by year's end to support 1080p displays, The Verge reports. Given 1080p Android phones are already out, Microsoft needs this to happen quickly. 2) Microsoft's shift to a per-CPU-core licensing model from a standard per-CPU model for its SQL Server database and BizTalk middleware reportedly has enterprises worried about broader pricing changes. VMware can sympathize. 3) Microsoft has stepped up its "Scroogled" ad campaign, which assails Google's commitment to user privacy and search result objectivity. 9 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 9, 4:38 PM Most U.S. consumers remain either unfamiliar with or unenthusiastic about Nokia (NOK) and BlackBerry's (BBRY) latest hardware, according to an MKM survey of 1,500 people. While 51% of respondents owned a smartphone, only 6% plan to buy a BlackBerry in the next 12 months, and just 1% a Nokia phone. Moreover, in spite of the Z10 and Lumia 920/820 launches, 63% of respondents had no idea when BB10 would launch in the U.S., and 61% were unaware WP8 (MSFT) phones are available. BlackBerry is counting on a fresh marketing push to raise its U.S. profile. 95 Comments [Tech]
