- Tuesday, April 9, 4:38 PM Most U.S. consumers remain either unfamiliar with or unenthusiastic about Nokia (NOK) and BlackBerry's (BBRY) latest hardware, according to an MKM survey of 1,500 people. While 51% of respondents owned a smartphone, only 6% plan to buy a BlackBerry in the next 12 months, and just 1% a Nokia phone. Moreover, in spite of the Z10 and Lumia 920/820 launches, 63% of respondents had no idea when BB10 would launch in the U.S., and 61% were unaware WP8 (MSFT) phones are available. BlackBerry is counting on a fresh marketing push to raise its U.S. profile. 95 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 9, 12:14 PM A (relatively) bullish MKM note on Intel (INTC +2.1%) appears to be giving a lift to the chip giant. The Street is already expecting Intel's PC CPU sales to fall 10% Y/Y in 1H13, thinks analyst Daniel Berenbaum, who believes plenty of bad news is baked in ahead of Intel's April 16 Q2 report. "Longer-term, we maintain our view that INTC will be able to monetize its technology and manufacturing advantage by gaining share in mobility, expanding its foundry business and continuing to dominate the data center space." Other PC-related names are also higher: MSFT +2.2%. WDC +1.4%. STX +1%. 6 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 8, 7:04 PM Only 41% of SAP software implementations in 2012 relied on Oracle (ORCL) databases, estimates Gartner - it thinks the other 59% used Microsoft's (MSFT) SQL Server. Oracle's share is down from an estimated 65% 5 years earlier, as SAP stops promoting Oracle and SQL Server improves its feature set. Now, with SAP's Business Suite having added support for the company's Hana in-memory database, Nomura predicts Business Suite/Hana implementations will surge. The firm also sees SAP releasing a cloud service for running Business Suite apps on Hana. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 8, 6:36 PM The 8 most popular Nokia (NOK) Lumia devices account for nearly 3/4 of all Windows Phones (MSFT) in use worldwide, according to usage stats from Windows Phone ad network AdDuplex. The Lumia 920 and 800 are each estimated to account for 14% of WP devices in operation, the Lumia 710 13%, and the Lumia 610 11%. HTC's 8X and 8X are seen accounting for 4% apiece. Kantar Comtech's stats indicate Windows Phone is gradually gaining share in the U.S. and Western Europe, albeit from low levels. 10 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 8, 1:57 PM The price tag for Ericsson's (ERIC +1.1%) purchase of Microsoft's (MSFT -0.6%) Mediaroom IPTV unit is in between the $99M Ericsson paid for network management software firm Optimi and the $234M it paid for a majority stake in the LG Nortel JV, says a company exec. Analyst Alexander Peterc points out Mediaroom complements the video assets Ericsson acquired from Tandberg. Meanwhile, chairman Leaf Johansson is striking a positive tone about 2013 mobile infrastructure demand. "I am a little more optimistic on the U.S ... Perhaps Europe too has stabilized." Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, April 8, 9:44 AM Microsoft (MSFT) unloads its Mediaroom IPTV infrastructure platform business to Ericsson (ERIC) for an undisclosed sum; Bloomberg reported about this deal a couple weeks ago. Ericsson claims the deal will give it a 25%+ share of the IPTV/multi-screen infrastructure market, and points out the global IPTV subscriber base is expected to grow to 105M in 2015 from 76M in 2013. In a blog post, Microsoft says it will now dedicate all its TV resources to the Xbox. The remarks come as The Verge reports the next-gen Xbox will be revealed at a May 21 event. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, April 4, 3:58 PM Google Glass is the new iWatch: everyone seems to be hatching plans for a competitor even before the original sees a commercial launch. Topeka's Brian White, fresh off predicting an iTV with a ring accessory will arrive, says he believes Microsoft (MSFT) is working on a set of Web-enabled glasses for a 1H14 launch. The report comes a day after Baidu confirmed it has a Google Glass-like project of its own. Separately, IDG's Agam Shah observes Windows RT tablets are being discounted left and right, raising fresh questions (previous) about the OS' future. 9 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, April 4, 7:46 AM Bank of America downgrades Microsoft (MSFT) to Neutral from Buy saying Windows 8 "lacks momentum." Analyst Kash Ragan says the bank's ability to make an objective assessment of the new OS was "impaired" by the shortage of touch devices running the system and caused BofA to remain optimistic on the shares for too long post product launch. Price target reduced to $33 from $35. Shares are off marginally premarket. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 2, 7:05 PM Citi strategists tweak the criteria for their top dividend-paying stock picks, lowering the standard for dividend yield while adding a new filter for dividend momentum “to give more emphasis on dividend safety and growth." The full list: MO, AEP, T, AVB, BMY, ED, D, DD, DUK, INTC, KMB, KRFT, LLY, MCD, MRK, MSFT, NU, NOC, OXY, PFE, PM, RTN, SRE, SO, SYY, XEL. 5 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, April 2, 6:49 PM Surface RT (MSFT) sales "have slowed considerably in the last month from an already anemic pace" and could be below 50K/month, according to Detwiler Fenton's checks. Surface Pro sales are a little better - Detwiler estimates a Q1 tally of 300K-500K - in part due to limited competition from PC OEMs. The firm is counting on the launch of Windows Blue (expected to support 7" tablets) and Office's touch-friendly Gemini updates to give Windows 8 Pro tablet sales a lift. (Bloomberg) 11 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 1, 3:57 PM After posting Y/Y share gains in the U.S. for much of calendar Q4, the iPhone's (AAPL -3.2%) U.S. share fell 350 bps Y/Y to 43.5% in the 3 months ending February, per Kantar Comtech. Android (GOOG +1%) claimed 51.2% of the market, up 580 bps Y/Y. In "Urban China," the December iPhone 5 launch helped the iPhone's share rise to 25.8%; Android's share is at 68.7%. Windows Phone (MSFT -0.1%) is making slow-but-steady progress (previous): its share is now at 4.1% in the U.S., 6.7% in the U.K., 6.8% in Germany, and 13.1% in Italy. 23 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 28, 2:29 PM Wither Windows RT? A vague Digitimes report claims Microsoft (MSFT) "will no longer launch products under its Windows RT line and will instead merge the product line" with the upcoming Windows Blue. A Microsoft exec recently defended RT, whose sales have underwhelmed. Separately, ZDNet reports a slew of Office updates will arrive over the next 2 years, starting this fall. The updates, codenamed Gemini, will feature touch-friendly improvements and (much like Blue) reflect a shift to "delivering regular, more frequent releases of both services and apps." 5 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 28, 10:33 AM Nokia (NOK -0.7%) insists it's "in full compliance" with Indian tax laws, and will fight a $383M tax bill levied by local authorities. Vodafone can sympathize. The tax bill arrives as the NYT's Nick Wingfield reports India is one of 7 markets (per IDC) where Windows Phone (MSFT) shipments outpaced iPhone (AAPL) shipments in Q4. The others: Russia, Argentina, Poland, South Africa, Ukraine, and a group of small Southern/Eastern European countries. Indian iPhone sales have begun to grow, but off a very small base. 10 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 27, 11:48 AM Microsoft (MSFT +0.8%) is in talks to sell its Mediaroom IPTV software platform to Ericsson (ERIC -0.4%) and could announce a deal in a few weeks, Bloomberg reports. Microsoft bet big on IPTV during the last decade and managed to score high-profile clients such as AT&T (U-Verse), Deutsche Telekom, and Telus, but the technology didn't quite take the pay-TV industry by storm, as Microsoft envisioned. Mediroom would complement Ericsson's switch/router and optical networking offerings for wireline carriers. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 27, 5:30 AM Ericsson (ERIC) has cut 1,399 positions in Sweden as part of its restructuring, fewer than the 1,550 jobs that the network-equipment vendor originally planned to axe. Ericsson will take a charge of 1.5B kroner ($230M) on its Q1 results because of the losses. Meanwhile, the company is reportedly in talks to acquire Microsoft's (MSFT) MediaRoom IPTV business, which allows telecom companies to provide television via the Internet. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 26, 7:35 AM Spanish open source group Hispalinux files a protest with the European Commission against Microsoft (MSFT) in which it alleges the company makes it difficult for customers to switch to Linux. The EC levied a heavy fine against Microsoft earlier this month for failing to offer users different web browser options. 2 Comments [Tech]
