- Tuesday, November 29, 2011, 6:06 AM A consortium led by P-E firm Silver Lake and Microsoft (MSFT) is reportedly submitting a plan to take up to a 20% stake in Yahoo (YHOO), and TPG Capital is also eyeing a minority stake. Yahoo's board is expected to meet this week, or possibly even today, to discuss options. (also: a partial LBO) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, November 28, 2011, 3:09 PM According to Eurogamer's sources, Microsoft's (MSFT) next Kinect will be capable of reading lips, as well as detecting users' emotions by analyzing their voices and facial expressions. Meanwhile, it was recently rumored Microsoft plans to offer 2 next-gen Xbox models - a set-top box-like machine aimed at casual gamers, and a more powerful system meant for gaming enthusiasts. (Xbox specs) (PC Kinect) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, November 25, 2011, 11:52 AM Many large-cap Japanese ADRs are up strongly, and Sony (SNE +5.1%), whose shares closed on Wednesday near an 18-year low, is among the top performers. The company announced the European launch titles for its upcoming PlayStation Vita handheld console earlier this week, and is hinting the PlayStation 4 will arrive around the same time as the next-gen Xbox (MSFT), which is expected to hit stores in 2013. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 11:58 AM Yahoo (YHOO -0.1%) outperforms after it's learned Microsoft (MSFT) has joined the ranks of firms to have signed Yahoo's strict NDA, which it's requiring of would-be buyers interested in taking a closer look at the company. The big question: is Microsoft serious about making a bid (perhaps with a partner), or does it just want a peek at a competitor/partner's books? (yesterday) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 10:28 AM Microsoft (MSFT) plans to bring its Kinect motion controller, which has become a smash hit in the console world, to the realm of Windows PCs, with the goal of supporting both gaming and user-interface applications. Aside from giving Windows a boost, Kinect's PC debut could bolster sales of Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD's discrete graphics processors, which have been losing ground to integrated solutions. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 7:45 AM Though some early data and commentary has been negative, it's too early to write off Nokia's (NOK) Lumia phones, argues Tero Kuittinen. British carriers Vodafone (VOD) and Orange (FTE) are seeing healthy sales, and Nokia only has to win over Symbian and BlackBerry (RIMM) users to surpass low expectations. Nokia backs up Kuittinen's comments this morning by reporting initial U.K. Lumia 800 sales are "excellent." Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 11:45 AM SmartMoney's Jack Hough finds an enticing mix for safety investors stuck in low-yielding Treasurys with 4 companies that offer up perfect AAA-ratings, decent yields, and low valuations. As a group, MSFT, XOM, JNJ, and ADP yield over 3% and trade at under 13 times projected profits. Hough writes that with those fundamentals - and U.S. creditworthiness suspect - it's time to "swap some Treasury bonds for higher-quality assets." Comment! [Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 10:26 AM Microsoft (MSFT) has acquired VideoSurf, a developer of technology for analyzing the content of video frames, for $70M. Microsoft says it plans to use VideoSurf's technology to "augment the Xbox 360 ecosystem," and to make it easier to search and discover entertainment content available on Xbox Live. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 4:43 PM Google Apps (GOOG) has become a threat to Microsoft's (MSFT) Office cash cow ... but how much of one? Many SMBs have embraced Google Apps due to its low costs and useful collaboration features. But outside of a few big wins, large enterprises have been unwilling to abandon Office, citing (among other things) Office's rich feature set, and fears of being dependent on a cloud-based service. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 11:33 AM Bill Gates testifies in a $1B antitrust lawsuit filed against Microsoft (MSFT -1.1%) in by Novell that may challenge his ability to recall details from his days at the helm when he helped beat back challengers to Office's suite of consumer software. The basis of the lawsuit dates back to actions by Gates and his firm from over 15 years ago that Novell alleges destroyed the market share of its long-ago popular WordPerfect software. Early signs from the courtroom tip toward a possible successful dismissal of the lawsuit by MSFT. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 10:26 AM Mobile developers are embracing Windows Phone, and thereby boosting its chances of becoming the smartphone world's "third ecosystem." Microsoft's (MSFT) platform now supports over 40K apps, up from less than 10K in February. With the App Store (AAPL) and Android Market (GOOG) each claiming over 500K apps, smaller developers may see Windows Phone as a way to get noticed in a crowded mobile app scene. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, November 21, 2011, 8:27 AM A 6% reduction in technology spending by the city of Seattle could portend slower sales at tech firms Microsoft (MSFT), IBM, and Intel (INTC). The city's CTO plans to delay upgrades, cut service contracts, and look for cheaper hardware in an effort to meet his slimmer budget. Gartner's Richard Gordon sees a larger trend of pervasive pessimism hitting tech spending - warning the industry will need to prepare for "general downward pressure everywhere." Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, November 18, 2011, 4:08 AM P-E firm Silver Lake has held talks with Microsoft (MSFT), Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and other potential partners about buying Yahoo (YHOO), the WSJ reports. Silver Lake is one of a few Yahoo suitors to sign an NDA, a requirement that has slowed the sale process. Comment! [Tech, M&A, Consumer]
- Thursday, November 17, 2011, 7:53 AM Though critics have questioned how much of a dent Nokia's (NOK) Lumia phones will make (I, II), their early reception appears to be solid. British carrier Orange (FTE) claims the Lumia 800 has broken pre-order sales records for Nokia devices. In addition, Nokia, which currently has little presence in North America, is said to be in talks with AT&T (T) to sell Windows Phones (MSFT). Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 4:29 PM All searches powered by Microsoft's (MSFT) Bing comprised 28.62% of the U.S. search market in October, up from 28.07% in September, Experian Hitwise reports. Bing took 13.23%, and Yahoo's (YHOO) share rose to 15.39%, each up a bit M/M. Google (GOOG) still dominated with a 65.38% share, off a bit from 66.12% a month earlier. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 9:49 AM Comments from Nokia (NOK)'s Paul Amsellem about a June 2012 ETA for a Windows 8 tablet suggest Microsoft (MSFT) could be rushing Windows 8's arrival due to the iPad's success, given prior expectations of a fall arrival. Also of note is Ansellem's remark about Nokia's first Windows Phone models amounting to mid-range devices, with high-end and low-end products due to eventually arrive. Comment! [Tech]
