- Friday, November 4, 2011, 4:26 PM A Samsung (SSNLF.PK) exec claims Android, which is responsible for most of the company's recent smartphone success, will land on 66% of its devices next year. However, Samsung also wants half of the remainder to run on Windows Phone (MSFT), and the other half to run on its Bada mid-range OS, as it tries to keep from becoming too dependent on Google (GOOG). 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, November 3, 2011, 5:30 PM Openwave (OPWV) surges 29.3% AH after announcing a patent licensing deal with Microsoft (MSFT). The deal, reported 2 months after Openwave sued Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM), was the main factor behind the company's blowout FQ1 results (revenue of $52.4M and EPS of $0.11 vs. consensus of $34.3M and -$0.07). Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 3, 2011, 3:13 PM Google (GOOG +1.9%) logs its biggest sale for its Google Apps platform with a deal to supply General Motors (GM). Covering more than 100K employees, the pact may represent a major step in Google's challenge to Microsoft (MSFT) in application software - and, for GM, a move away from its more traditional groupware, Lotus Notes (IBM). 1 Comment [Tech, Breaking News]
- Thursday, November 3, 2011, 3:08 PM Google's (GOOG +1.6%) Matt Cutts defends his company's search engine algorithm, pointing to a study that shows Bing favors Microsoft (MSFT +1.8%) content to a greater extent than Google favors its own. The results contradicts a Harvard study that basically said the exact opposite. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, November 3, 2011, 11:09 AM Is VMware (VMW) at risk of becoming the Netflix of the enterprise world? A recent survey of virtualization users found 38% planning to change their primary virtualization platform over the 12 months, with cost cited as a reason 59% of the time. It's already been speculated that a backlash to a recent change in VMware's pricing model could give rivals MSFT and CTXS a lift. (also) Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, November 3, 2011, 7:02 AM Google (GOOG) announces it will serve ads at the bottom of search results, squeezing again the amount of "organic" results that users of its search engine see after entering a search query. The bigger question: Does the company risk losing its search market dominance by offering an ad-bloated search results page in comparison to Bing's (MSFT) cleaner look? Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 2, 2011, 9:00 AM Though Microsoft (MSFT) has suggested Qualcomm (QCOM) will remain the exclusive supplier of Windows Phone processor chips, Nokia (NOK) apparently has other ideas: the company says it will use ST-Ericsson (STM, ERIC) chips in future Windows Phone devices. The deal represents a much-needed boost for ST-Ericsson, which has been posting huge losses. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 1, 2011, 11:51 AM NetMarketShare's October data shows Internet Explorer's (MSFT) PC browser share to be down to just 52.6%, largely thanks to Google Chrome's (GOOG) rapid growth. Meanwhile, Mobile Safari's share of the browser market has soared to 62.2% on the back of heavy iPad usage. Google's PC search share rose slightly to 82.4%, while its mobile search share was roughly flat at 91.1%. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, October 27, 2011, 2:42 PM Shares of Office Depot (ODP) go on a tear, up 12.2%, helped along in part with an announcement that the office supply seller will enter a deal with Microsoft (MSFT +3.1%) to provide digital print solutions through the Bing business portal. Small business customers using Bing's online service will be able to create advertisements, sales collateral, and presentations that can be printed on demand at a local Office Depot store. Comment! [On the Move]
- Thursday, October 27, 2011, 1:55 PM Like Engadget, BI's Ellis Hamburger is impressed with Nokia's (NOK) Lumia 800 Windows Phone (MSFT). But, in a refrain others are likely to echo, he refuses to buy one until it supports his favorite apps. Windows Phone supports over 30K apps, but that pales relative to the 500K+ available for iOS (AAPL) and Android (GOOG). 5 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 26, 2011, 5:56 PM Nomura cuts its earnings estimates for Microsoft’s (MSFT) current and next fiscal years, saying Wall Street “may not have fully grasped” margin hits MSFT likely will take from its recent purchase of Skype, its search deal with Yahoo (YHOO), job-cut costs in Microsoft’s server segment “and third-party royalties within the Xbox business.” 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 26, 2011, 4:43 PM Mozilla - the nonprofit group that builds versions of the Firefox web browser - gives a nod to Microsoft (MSFT) after releasing Firefox with Bing, customized to make Bing the default search engine and homepage for users not quite motivated enough to change their preloaded settings away from Google. Even with the small step, Mozilla isn't expected to side with Bing in the search battle after its annual report (video) reveals a significant portion of its revenue is derived from Google. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 26, 2011, 2:56 PM Nokia's (NOK -0.1%) new Windows phones carry "worryingly uncompetitive” price tags, according to Sanford Bernstein's Pierre Ferragu. The Lumia 800, at $585, is "condemned to be either anecdotic or go through massive price cuts," and the Lumia 710 "clearly comes across as cheap... At $375, the phone doesn’t appear fit to compete against Android phones." Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 26, 2011, 8:33 AM Nokia's (NOK) just-announced Lumia 800 Windows Phone (MSFT) bears a strong resemblance to its N9 MeeGo phone, though a Qualcomm (QCOM) chip has replaced the N9's Texas Instruments (TXN) chip. Engadget says the phone "looks quite incredible," Nonetheless, Nokia faces an uphill battle to wrest market share from Android (GOOG) and iOS (AAPL). 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 2:03 PM Details about Nokia's (NOK) first Windows Phone (MSFT) devices - the high-end Lumia 800, and mid-range Lumia 710 - have been leaked a day ahead of their official release. The phones are expected to be available in "select European markets" next month, and in the U.S. next year. (previously) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, October 24, 2011, 3:04 PM Yahoo (YHOO +3.2%) continues its strong October performance after Google's (GOOG) name gets thrown into the company's soap opera-esque buyout saga. Scott Cleland thinks Google is "playing with antitrust fire" by dancing with Yahoo. But perhaps Google's goal is to simply keep its rival out of Microsoft's (MSFT) hands by financing a competing bid.
